Tonight, I had my last girl scout meeting of the school year. As I'm saying goodbye to parents and packing up, my co-leader gets a phone call. As she's talking on the phone, she starts laughing...hysterically (doubled over, snorting, that type of thing).
She gets off the phone and precedes to tell me what was so funny. Her friend's 10 year old son decided he wanted to see if the family pet - a bunny - could fly. So, he threw it up in the air. The poor thing fell to the ground hard and broke one (or both) back legs. Her husband was going to go "fix the bunny." She was laughing nearly the entire time she was telling me the story.
I am beyond disgusted and horrified.

What 10 year old doesn't know that bunnies don't fly? That kid needs to be watched closely and by someone other than his parents since they are thinking this is funny.

I have a 10yo son. He may do some silly things from time to time but he would NEVER throw an animal in the air "to see if it can fly". That's not normal. And your co-leader's reaction is not normal either. Did you look at her like this:  ? |

I know a lot of 10 yrs. old and none of them would find that funny. The 10 yr. olds I know love animals and want to protect them, not hurt them.

Horrific. WTF? Who thinks is funny to injure a pet intentionally? And if the parents thought it was funny it encourage the child to do more awful things to pets or people. Id probably call the animal protection agency, this was a crime against an animal- it was afterall intentional. I can't imagine how freaked out I'd be if one of us accidentally dropped one of pets and it got hurt, but for this kid to do it intentiionally and then to laugh about - very, very sick.
I definitely would tell her what I thought and that if she can't make adult decisions regarding innocent animals and children - she's not fit to be any kind of "leader" or role model for them.
In general I am pretty diplomatic and non-confrontational but to preotect children and animals- I'd go all mam bear and kick her out of the troop - with a second thought.
ETA - I misunderstood- the coleader's family didn't do this, it was friend. Well I guess I'd take a different approach and defintely make it clear that her behavior is unacceptable around the children and still tell her that, "what I thought and that if she can't make adult decisions regarding innocent animals and children - she's not fit to be any kind of "leader" or role model for them."
