You know a wooden box that sits at the end of your bed? I have looked for one for years. I don't know where to get one other than to have one made. Anyone have any ideas? Should I get one made of cedar?

Does Lane still make Cedar chests? I have one (Lane) that I inherited from my great aunt. It was built in 1941 and is cedar. It's in my son's bedroom right now and we use it to store linens.

Amazon.com has them. I've also seen quite a few listed for sale on Craigslist.

I live in an old house with hardly any closet space. I actually have two chests that I use to store things in. One is a Lane cedar chest that was my grandmother's when she was young, and another that is just an antique wooden chest that I use at the foot of my bed to store unused or seldom used linens (like blankets, I live in Florida LOL) It's funny, I live in a house that was built during a time that these kinds of storage items were used to offset the lack of storage space-and so I use what would be considered traditional for that time period. I didn't plan it that way, it just sort of evolved.

Yes I have the one my Mom gave me 30 years ago. My step dad used to call it my hopeless chest lol! I don't have it at the end of my bed, no room there and I don't really want it anymore. But I've kept it because I feel like I should. I think it is a really nice one and it was probably a splurge for my struggling Mom.

I have a blanket chest at the foot of the bed - it's taller than a typical cedar chest and we use it to store extra sheets and blankets.
If you buy a used or new cedar chest - make sure it doesn't have a latch that will lock if it's accidentally shut - there have been recalls on several Lane chests because children got inside and suffocated - the lid locked automatically when it shut. We drilled the lock out on ours just to be safe.

I have one from my grandmother at the foot of our bed and it has my sweaters in it. In our extra bedroom we have one from my dh's grandmother. In hers there are crocheted afghans.

you might have better luck finding one if you search for it as a cedar chest or a blanket chest instead of a hope chest. I have one. My dad made it in shop class when he was in high school. If you store woolens in it you'll want it to be made of cedar to discourage moths.

My mom didn't like the idea of a wooden chest, so she gave me a large wicker one. While I love the idea, over the years (23 to be exact) a lot of the wicker has broken off so it wasn't exactly the best idea.
Hope you can find one!

I had one. My parents gave it to me when I graduated from high school 20 years ago. I shopped and shopped for one I liked and couldn't settle on one. So my dad picked one he liked. And while it was very nice and high quality it wasn't a style I liked. But I kept it and didn't say anything so I wouldn't hurt his feelings. Then 4 years ago we got a puppy. And she got shut in the room with the ceder chest for 20 minutes. She chewed that thing up. While functionary it was fine, cosmetically, there was no going back. So I got rid of it. Huge relief. I kind of miss the functionality. But if I ever replace it, it will be with something I truly love.
tl;dr---> I used to. Get one of ceder if you can.

I have a steamer trunk that was my Great-Grandmother's, I use it to store blankets and sheets. It is in my bedroom, but not at the foot of the bed.

I have a Lane cedar chest that I inherited from my mother. I believe she got it in 1951 or thereabouts. I love the smell when I open the lid.

I do and yes, it's at the foot of my bed. I have my wedding dress and my mom's wedding dress in there, the baptismal gown I made for my kids, and some old quilts. I bought it from a furniture store shortly after DH and I were married. I always wanted one, so I bought my own!

I have a Lane Cedar Chest my mother bought for my high school graduation. (31 years ago) It is in my craft room/office and has keepsakes in it. Some of them have been in there 31 years. I know she sacrificed to buy it for me and I love it.

Should I get one made of cedar? I got one from my parents when I graduated high school in the 90's. The last 2 places I've lived it's actually sat in my dining room as my bedrooms were too small for it. For now, it holds blankets and quilts. But in college and for several years after it held all my memories and things I had kept and collected through the years.

Thanks Kathy. That's a great site. I will definitely look into it from there. I am trying to decorate a bedroom right now. I am scared...I am making a huge decision and it's scaring the heck out of me! Not just a hope chest but a life move.

I have two. One belonged to my great grandmother. I keep it in a hallway upstairs filled with mementos. I had a piece of glass cut for the top to keep it from getting furthered scratched. It is a very old piece. I then bought one for our bedroom many years ago from Bombay Co. which is now out of business. I keep linens in that one and it matches our bedroom furniture.

Yep and it is at the foot of our bed! It's filled with keepsakes and treasures. My mom has an amazing one from Lane that she was given for her 16th birthday that I have been trying to snag from her for decades.

My daughter (19) has one that she asked her boyfriend to build for her. I never had one. But, I did move into my own apartment shortly after I turned 18 so there wouldn't have been a lot of time to build it up anyway.

I do! A have a beautiful cedar chest that I got from my parents for graduation. It's got a fabric top that I switch out to match the room it's in and I've changed out the knobs to freshen it up a time or 2. Right now it's storage for blankets and bedding.

I have one. We had it built by an Amish guy who lives across the street from my in-laws, when we moved to our current house 9 yrs. ago. Its cherry wood lined with cedar. It matches our bedroom furniture, and sits at the foot of our bed. I keep our embroidered wedding blanket draped over the top so it doesn't get scratched. We just store sweaters inside, plus some other clothes. We had a Lane store in our town when I was a kid, and for our high school graduation, they gave everyone a mini cedar chest (tabletop size). I thought that was very cool, I loved the smell, and always wanted a bigger one.

I inherited a Lane cedar chest. Almost 60 years old, and still smells of cedar. They appear regularly on our Craigslist, highly recommend an old one!

Yes I have a hope chest, it was my Great Aunts. I got it when I was ten years old in 1970. My Grandmother started giving me a place setting of flatware for my birthday each year and I would get serving pieces for Christmas. She did this for all of her granddaughters. We would get other presents but we all looked forward to seeing what pieces she would give us.
That was 44 years ago and I just retired that set to use in our RV since I was down to about 6 full place settings. When my grandmother stopped buying them, I had 24 place settings and many serving pieces. She will be 96 years old this year!
I now use my hope chest for storing memorabilia.

I forgot to add- I don't know if Lane is still around, but at a time they would send replacement locksets. I got mine about 16 years ago, I had to send them a model number or something.
I guess the cedar has remained so fresh because they close almost air tight.
