do it! I threw out mine a couple years ago, have never missed them! there are so many templates and things online if you need inspiration, you don't need those mags!

I had every issue of CK and Simple Scrapbooks and I took them to a crop weekend and people could have whatever they wanted for free ( I kept them in my car and the interested people came to my car and took what they wanted). On the way home, I took them to the recycling bin. In my mind, I justified it that I gave people who would get usage from them an opportunity to get them. I don't have a great deal of supplies, but I did enjoy the magazine. Keeping them was more a matter of "I have every copy of CK and SS", but they were really just sitting on a shelf, taking up a lot of space, I rarely looked at them again.
I would not recommend even thumbing through them especially since you haven't scrapped for five years. There's nothing in them that you couldn't get inspiration from on-line now.

Did you check ebay, some of the older magazines still sell quite nicely on ebay. I just looked and for example 12 Creating Keepsakes magazines from 2004 sold for 40.00. Interesting, I checked eBay AU and the last few listings had 22 Creating Keepsakes magazines with a starting bid of $10.They look like they have been relisted several times with no bids. eBay listing Where are you located, perhaps the market is better for them if you aren't in AU.

I got rid of mine long ago. I spent a Saturday going through all of them, cutting out the layouts or articles that I liked and tossing the rest. I made my own idea book out of an old blue CM idea book. Since I don't follow trends, I wasn't worried about something being "outdated." I just scrap what I like. I kept my CTMH idea books (love them) and my two "My Creative Companions", even though I don't use those two much any more. My general "go to" is my Pinterest board.

I got rid of lots of mine. Lots I took to crop and gave away there, next batch went to charity and the final batch I just threw in the recyling bin. I still have a few left but not many. I worked on a principle that I needed to be able to fit all my mags on one shelf of my book case and whenever I had too many to fit, that's when I did a purge. That shelf also holds beading mags, scrapbooking books and stamping mags. I rarely look through any of them so I am sure most will be gone next time a purge is due.
ETA I did the whole going through mags and saving specific pages during my cross stitch years and I NEVER LOOKED AT THEM they went in the recyling bin a couple of years ago. What a total waste of time and energy that was for me.

I free-cycled mine a few years ago. I figured that there was oodles of inspiration online and I really, really needed the space that all of those magazine were taking up. Somebody snapped them up so fast that I never even had time to second-guess myself about parting with them. They were claimed and picked up within the day.

I'm surprised people buy them!
I went through all of mine while watching TV. I tore out the pages of layouts I liked and tossed the magazines in the recycling. I've never regretted it.

People might buy an issue or two or a dozen, but the cost of shipping (even media) is cost prohibitive.
Give them away or they go in the recycle bin, you won't even notice. Right now, you are thinking about what you paid for them, that money is already spent, gave you enjoyment, now it's taking up space (physical and mental).

You can do it! I did it and it was fine . Think of all the extra space you will have! I have some specialty books still as well and am almost at the point where I am ready to let those go. I never look at any of my books anymore.

I got rid of the majority of mine a few years ago, and kept a few special edition magazines I really like. I ripped out pages I was interested in and put them in a binder in different categories, and recycled the rest as no one was interested in them. Then I never looked at the binder because I would just look on my Pinterest boards for ideas, so I tossed the binder contents last year. There's nothing in there I can't find online.
If you are in a similar situation with cooking magazines, I found almost every recipe I had ever torn out of a magazine or saved a magazine for online and pinned the recipe to the appropriate category on Pinterest. My recipe binder is much less bulky and easier to navigate now (The binder holds family recipes and those others have shared).

I inherited a bunch from my sister and started going through them to see what I wanted to tear out and keep. That got tired real quick. I just gave them all to the Salvation Army to sell at their store. More space for my scrappy supplies.

A few years ago I donated a whole bunch of mine to the library, years and years worth, and they were pleased as punch to get them! Many libraries also have periodicals in their collections that people can check out. They especially like it when they can get full years of them. Plus when you donate them you can take a tax deduction (in the U.S. anyway) and then I don't feel quite so horrible about all that money down the drain. If I decide to get rid of more of mine, that's what I'll do again.
I still have quite a few magazines and special issues in my personal reference library. I keep them sorted by month or theme so if I'm looking for something particular I can quickly go to just those relevant issues and flip through them. That way I find I actually do use them and look at them. For me, it's a lot quicker to look through 4-5 magazines than it is to sift through loads of links and blogs online.

Let them go.
When we moved in 2009 I went through all our magazines and scanned the pages, recipes and articles I wanted to keep, then donated them. I did save Cards magazines and my SU! and CTMH idea books.
I was just switching to digi at this point so the JS articles and the BH/SJ clean and simple layouts. I haven't looked at that binder in EVER. And I have never made any of the recipes I saved or done any of the workouts.
FWIW - Whenever I giveaway or recycle magazines I always cut off my address label and shred.

I tossed mine years ago and I miss the paper I sold off way more than I miss the magazines. I kept the ones I was in (a very small stack) and a couple of idea books just because they have good reminders of basic design principles in them. The rest went to the trash.
You are going to love how freeing it is to have that space usable again.
I love your recipe organization. I have a three ring binder with magazine recipes in it and I find I do actually use the recipes when I get them out of the magazines and make them easy to find.

I just downsized my clothes closet from two six foot closets to one closet, Now every time I open my closet I only see things I want to wear. It feels awesome! I didn't think about the $ spent because I used the clothes and now someone else can. I did the same thing with my hallway closet and six large bags went to Goodwill. There was stuff in there I hadn't thought about for years. For me, it feels awesome.

When was the last time you looked at them? I came across an old pile recently and threw them out (or maybe I donated them...they aren't in my craft area now).

I was in a similar position a couple years ago. Finally I just loaded them up in the car and donated them the same day so I couldn't change my mind. I actually have not regretted it.
I only scrap occasionally and Pinterest is my go to for inspiration.
Plus the space I acquired after they were gone was great.
I also purged a bunch of my scrap supplies and did a giveaway here on the boards.

Also don't just throw them away at least give them to an op shop or give away free on Facebook (I'm in a Facebook group to give away free stuff in Melb...let me know if you want the details)
I won't throw them away, I was going to take them down to the op shop. Last time DSO took a whole lot of my scrapping mags there they were really excited, because they sell very well.
It's actually surprising that there are some really great layouts in the older mags that still do appeal to me.
I was thinking about going through them and scanning the pages I like, but I've already spend a few hours going through old Better Homes & Gardens magazines this weekend and tearing out the recipes I wanted to keep. I can't be bothered doing it with the scrapping mags.
Thanks for the talking-to girls! I think I'm nearly ready.
If they appealed that much, you would have scrapped in the last 5 years.
I don't regret tossing mine (I think I sold them actually) for one second.
And now my machine embroidery are going. TODAY. As in, I should have done it a week ago when I pulled them out of the drawer, but it's time for me to walk the talk.

This is my thing, I still enjoy hands on magazines and find the link/blog searches not so much fun. That said, recycling is my main way to down size. In my experience, Goodwill volunteers visibly cringe when I haul in large stacks of magazines and libraries are never interested. Maybe it's me lol.
ETA: Whoops, where did my quote go?
ETA2: See, I hate technology gone wrong lol

I called first and asked the library if they were interested, and they said they were so I hurried right over before I changed my mind, LOL.

I think I am going to go through them all and take out the LO's I like and then toss the rest. And keep the bigger, nicer magazines that aren't monthlies.
