I've seen the hacked Misti tools around the net. I often wonder if they are precise. I think the good part about the Misti is how rigid the front it...plexiglass or something...while a dvd case is much flimsier and therefore more give.

I've seen that too. I'm glad there are options to help people that can't afford, don't have room or don't want the MISTI

I think it seems to work pretty darn good for a fraction of the price. However, disclaimer, I would never spend that kinda of monesy on a misti or anything else that isn't multifuncationl...

The Misti is worth every cent IMO. I love being able to get my stamp perfectly placed. Also the ability to stamp again if the ink coverage is splotchy in the exact same location is wonderful. No more wasted paper from misstamping something.

I made a little one from a CD case with play foam in the bottom. I only stamp small things, so it works for me. I'd never spend the $90+ to get one in Canada. And I can restamp if the ink is not perfect the first time and it works fine.

This is wonderful! I have been teaching my sweet little 82 year old neighbor to stamp. She has a card ministry as her service project for her church. She has been paying for all the cards and postage herself, but is on a limited income and it is getting to be too much for her to handle. I have a lifetime worth of supplies for her to use, so I talked to her about stamping simple cards and she has been so excited. She states she used to love to do crafts, but now has really bad arthritis in her hands. She also has little strength, so using pressure in stamping has been hard for her and we have not been able to keep up with the number of cards she needs. There is no way she could afford the other stamping tool. I just ordered the materials from Hallmark Scrapbooking to make her a little tool. It will be so much easier to handle and use since it is so lightweight and takes no storage room.
The Little B stamp positioner grid is out of stock at both Amazon & Hallmark, but I did find one on e-bay. The prices there are a bit much though.
I am so happy to be able to do this for her!!!! I love making stamping converts

My point was the material of the dvd case is what I have issue with. The misti is heavier plastic than a dvd case and to me that makes a difference. I made a makeshift version of the Misti with a dvd case before I decided to buy the real version...just to see...and that is what is I am making my assessment on. Now wallyagain cd case idea sounds better because cd cases are hard plastic more like the Misti.

I'm intrigued with the misti, but I'll stick with my $6 stamp-a-ma-jig. I've tried the cd case a long time ago and want a fan.

I know I tried using a case from my stampin up stamps and I wasn't happy with how it worked. Don't tell, but this weekend I'm going to try to cobble together a version using some balsa wood strips and a couple of big shot plates. . .

And it's really great if you're making a whole set of cards doing the same thing over and over.

If you look at Maureen Wong's blog she has a lot of Misti tutorials that show how much the tool (or a DIY version of it) can really do.

Doesn't the Misti and ones like it, that come down from the side leave a smooshy edge to your stamping? I like coming straight down with my stamping. Just curious.

Ok, so I bought a DVD case ($2.99) and a piece of fun foam ($0.59) this week and just made a stamping case. I used washi tape to hold down my cardstock. It works fine! I stamped with a large solid area stamp purposely not inking good so I would have to re-stamp. I had no problems re-inking and re-stamping. I also stamped with a delicate stamp and it came out crisp. I was also worried about the case closing and not being able to get it open without ruining the card but there was no problem. I think if I was doing a lot of cards (think Christmas or a card set) or multiple stamps on one card at the same time it would work great. For a single card or stamp I'll probably still grab my SAMJ, but who knows. After I've used it for a while I may like it better.
Will it last forever? Probably not. But for less than $5.00 I'll get some use out of it.

I am going to try to make my own. I ordered a thin metal sheet to put on the bottom of the case under the grid paper. I'm hoping it will work.

I did the same thing. The case is pretty rigid and works well so far. And hey if it breaks it was only a few dollars and I'll 'make' another one

I finally made mine last night and it works great! I used a 5X7 DVD case, a thin 5X7 metal sheet(by Darice $1.99), fun foam(already had), grid paper(already had) and 2 heavy duty magnets(that I already had from HL). I put the metal sheet on the bottom, then the fun foam and then the grid paper. The magnets hold my paper in place.

Being able to restamp in the exact same spot has more to do with the hinge rather than the firmness in the top or bottom plates... Pick a case with a hinge that doesn't wobble/allow any twisting...
