How do you document your trips...in traditional albums? PL style albums? Photobooks? I am struggling to decide how to start tackling our trips. I think I am intimidated by the sheer volume of pictures, between DH & I, we literally take thousands on each trip. I document a few favorites in our PL albums, but would like to get more off the hard drive to enjoy them. Limited time is also a factor, so I feel like I need to be strategic in my decision. I am also debating if I want to keep the use the same method for every trip for consistency in the albums (and streamlining)...or if that even matters. I would love to hear how you all approach travel documenting. Hopefully, the "conversation" will help me develop a plan...

Trips are my favorite. When I Scrapbook them, I feel like I am going on the trip again. I use 12x 12 ring albums because trips are usually too big for post bound. We both like photography so we have lots of photos, too.
Trips are the only time I use 12x12, so that is a nice change. I do use 8x8 for short trips.
Over the years, I have found my favorite albums to look at are the ones with 5x7 size for favorite photos. Across from them I put smaller photos: 2x3 or 4x6 to tell the rest of the story. I do that for short and long trips.
I find I don't enjoy the smaller photos as much after I am done. I find myself just rushing past the pages with smaller photos to get to the 5x7's. If I wanted to get an album done fast and the max effect, I think I would make it all 5x7 with 1 photo on a page.

All of the above.
For our last big trip (2 weeks overseas visiting family, about 3k photos) I made a 100 page chronological photo book with just photos and date/location no other journaling.
Now I'm going back and scrapping picture for STORIES I want to tell. No pressure to scrap every photo since they are all mostly in the photo book. This has taken a lot of pressure off of me.
I'm more of a chronological event scrapper so having a big focus on the stories is a shift for me and a (good) challenge.
I haven't yet but I may also add in pocket pages or small inserts if I feel like it.

I do 12x12 scrapbooks, but add in some pages of just photos sleeves. I might leave one space open for some journaling on those pages.

I do a mix depending on the trip, how long it was, and how many pictures I took. For a long trip with lots of photos, I do PL style with maybe a few LO's in a 12x12. For a shorter trip or long weekend, I will either do an 8X8 or a snap album with divided page protectors. Our last trip was to Las Vegas but had lots of off-strip adventures - Valley of Fire and a raft trip down the Colorado River. For that one, I have mostly 12x12 LO's, but for the park and rafting pix I have them in divided page protectors.

I'm no help to you because I've done all of the above.! My preferred way to do it is to mix 12 by 12 layouts into a PL style album. Anything that inspires me to create am12 by 12 page gets one and the smaller stories get into PL style. I like to collect ephemera (tickets, restaurant business cards, maps) so everything ends up looking pretty eclectic anyway. I like hybrid books but can be hesitant to alter a photobook after I receive it so have only really done that for vacations when I have tons of nice pics (the beach, water parks) but not much in the way of story.

I love scrapping travel, that is MY THING. I scrap "old school" so it probably won't be your taste but you can see my travel pages here tripswithtwo.com/SCRAPBOOKINGSCENICAREA.html, sorry the links are not set up, and I have many more to add, but it takes a alot of time to upload. Maybe you can find some inspiration. I general do a theme for each trip. Since 2012 we have been camping at various places throughout the year, so I pick a design and follow it through for that year's camping destinations.

I've only done 2 specific travel albums. The first was done in a CM album and the 2nd a WRMK D-ring with lots of pocket pages. Normally I just incorporate our travel photos into our yearly scrapbooks. I scrap chronologically (can't break the habit lol). I gotta say I've never taken anywhere near the number of photos on my trips as the OP said she does.
My sister makes digital albums on Shutterfly and they always look really nice. I'd probably do that if I was facing thousands of photos to be scrapbooked.

I use traditional albums to document my trips, but in 2012 I was doing PL and went to Ireland, and included Ireland spreads in my PL album. But the trip will still be scrapped in its entirety in a traditional album.
I think pocket-style would be a great way to go if your time is really limited, then you can still have albums to pull out and enjoy.
Or you could go super simple on traditional layouts, and do photo+story-focused layouts with little embellishing. And maybe use some of the Becky Higgins page protectors for enlargements, like a 5x7 or 8x10 of a favorite photo, throughout.

I did my husband's South America trip in PL type pages and I really dislike it. Someday I may redo it.
On the other hand I love my Germany/Austria albums. I collected wonderful theme stuff, used lots of memorabilia and they are just a real tribute to the trip.
I have also done trips in my 8.5x11 albums and I like those too, although I could scrap more pics per page in the 12x12.

I have more travel albums than any other type album. I make two for every vacation we take. The one exception is Vegas. We've taken our kids there so much that I have 6 trips combined into two 3.5 D ring albums. Love that I can see my boys grow from 6 to 16 in one album. I originally did all regular albums for all travel albums. Now I do about 80% traditional and 20% PL pages. They mix well together. I retired three weeks ago and plan on scrapping my arse off. WHen I get caught up with my boys albums, I am going to go back and do two travel albums for just my husband and me from the 90's. All of the pictures are 3.5 x 5 if believe. I am going to do PL because it seems faster and I am not going to worry about it.

I normally do a 12x12 3 D-ring album for each trip. If I have a TON of pics, I either do mostly 2 page LO's with smaller pic collages in order to get a lot done, OR, I will do a 2 page LO with a pocket page for more photos inserted into the middle with some embellishment on some of the pics.
I have examples. Let me know if you'd like me to post a couple.

I do 8.5x11 ring albums, love the versatility. That's for a week vacation to the same place every year. I could see using a 12x12 for a longer vacation or if I wanted to include more photos.
I use all different size pages to hold photos, ephemera and layouts. I generally journal, but I also make a journal before the trip to write in during the week, so it's just copying over what I've written.
What's nice is that there are times I just have too many good photos, so instead of choosing 1 or 2, I can slap a pocket page in between and include those extras. Kind of Project Life-y.

My travel pages are mixed in with all the other layouts in my 12x12 albums but I recently did an 8x8 of just one trip and I really liked that. I might do more of other vacations.

I'm not consistent in my approach at all. I've done mini albums for shorter trips where I've created a photo collage for each day and then used that on one side of a two page layout with journaling on the other.
I've done 12x12 postbound albums and 12x12 D-ring albums with a mix of 12x12 and PL style layouts. I've done digi layouts which will eventually be printed in photo books at 8x8.
The last project I tackled with only 4x6 photos and have three very stuffed albums for a 5 week holiday - way too many layouts for me. I was hoping that having all the photos printed would make it easy to scrap, and it definitely has, but I like have a mix of photo sizes in my album because I can get so many more images in without the bulk.
For my next project I'm going to try alternating a PL page protector with a 12x12 one. I still do a mix of single and double pages and I'm hoping this will allow me to reduce the number of albums required to document this trip.

This is such good info - we just got back from 3 weeks in Great Britain and I am overwhelmed with pics. I don't scrap 12 x 12 anymore because the finished product is so big nobody bothers to look at them - the smaller 8 x 8 size seems to generate more interest - even from me! But I'm worried I won't be able to get enough photos, ephemera, journaling in it. I'm on the fence about pocket scrapping - it takes me LONGER than traditional because I have to spend so much time finding the proper size and orientation of photo to fit the pocket and then I have to do the same thing for the back side of the pocket. In theory I love the idea, in practice not so much. Any advice on which album you used for long trips and how you manage pocket scrapping would be much appreciated.

I use 8x8 for travel albums. I have a shelf that's starting to fill up with our travel albums and they're our favorite ones to look at. I love the size because it's easy for me to complete the whole album in a short period of time, but it does limit how many pictures I can use. I usually make some grid pages with smaller pictures and some pages with four 3x4 or square pictures. I also try to make some pages that have pockets that are accessible without having to take out the whole layout from the page protector. That way I can include more pictures. I think if I had 1,000 or more pictures I would just have to go with a bigger album and probably a D ring style so I could fit more pages. I'd probably use more collages and grids to include more pictures.

I have numerous albums because we travel often. One thing that helps is to tell the story and not focus on embellishing as much. I love to embellish, but choose not to concentrate on this aspect in a travel album. The photos and the journaling are front and center. I like to use sketches, too, to get the thousands of photos (I hear you!) scrapped. I own lots of travel stamps and use those easily on the pages. A few other embellishments - geotags, ephemera, an enamel dot or five, and I'm ready to move on.

I love travel albums-they are mostly what I scrap. First thing I do is edit down my photos-by editing I mean looking closely through the photos and any that are alike I compare and choose only the best one. Being a former photographer I always take more than one shot of each thing, so that helps bring the photo count down. Absolutely get rid of any that are out of focus, or just not a good choice for whatever reason. Mind you I'm not deleting these-I'm just not choosing to print them. (Except for the out of focus ones-those are deleted). I print mostly 4x6 with the best being 5x7 or 8x12.
I prefer using CM 12x12 albums and scrapping in a very clean style (not on white-it's too boring for me) using colored cardstock, the photos, and the tons of memorabilia I've brought back from the trip. I keep the memorabilia clean and wrinkle free by bringing a folded accordian file with me on the trip. It does double duty because I can use a slot of each day's activities, so when I get home I don't have a pile to sort through. I collect tickets, menus, brochures, maps, hotel stationary, basically anything I can find on paper. Post Cards are terrific for the views I'm not able to capture like inside museums that don't allow photography (like the Anne Frank museum), or that amazing night shot or angle you can't quite shoot due to time or crowds.
I like using colored cardstock because it gives me a way to pull the color from the photographs in a clean way and still have lots of clean space for the photographs to be front and center (which is what I want). With the memorabilia and journaling I keep embellishing to the minimum. I might add rubber stamps, or something else that blends well. CM has 4x6 clear pockets (well, they're not really pockets they are open on the top and bottom) that adhere to the background and I can slide a postcard, a folded map, or what I like best a brochure inside that can be pulled out and read. I don't think they make them anymore but I buy mine off of Ebay.

I have always scrapped my travel items in a traditional format using 12 x 12 post and D-ring. However, I'm going to a crop tomorrow and plan to start an album for my trip to Italy in the summer of 2013. I'm going to try the pocket protector approach. I'm a little nervous that I won't like the PL style.

I pretty much only do travel journals and Dec. Daily because I just don't have time for much else. I like to make the journals while I go.
I always keep a "journal" of what we did each day and put it in the book somehow. Last year I make a book using the simple stories thick chipboard dividers as front and back covers then made pages as we went. I got a little behind but I love putting stuff in there daily. I put together a kit of supplies. I use Instax photos. Then when we got home from that trip I printed out a couple hundred photos and put them in a photo album. This year I'm going to attempt to print photos at Target or something along the way as I heard those kiosks now have bluetooth.
I actually just logged on because I want to find the app that lets you easily put two 3X4 photos into one 4X6 print. This year for our trip I'm going to do the simple stories chevron burlap binder and want to do a better job of making the pages as we go. I did that style for DD this year and it worked really well for me. I will still have lots of collage type spreads and pages but the pocket pages work so well for all the stuff you pick up along the way

I do mainly 12x12 albums and am a chrono scrapper. When it comes to my travel albums, I stick w/12x12 but they are in their own separate album - one for each trip. Or 3, in the case of Disney.
If you're looking for a timely way to get them scrapped, PL is the way to go. You can get all your pics in quick and then just journal away. They do make sleeves that have different sized pockets, so if you want to have a few photos that are larger than the typical 4x6, you can work that out, too.
It would also be a great way to include memorabilia. Just stick it in a pocket!

My vacation pictures sat in a box for years. I had several trips I wanted to scrap but it was so overwhelming to think of doing layouts for hundreds of photos that they just sat there. I ended up trying PL and was able to get it done one trip done in a few days. I used PL for the others as well. I still like traditional scrapping for most photos but it just depends on how much time and energy I can devote to a project.

I take thousands of photos too... I get them all (except for blurry/obviously bad ones), printed as 3x4 when there's a sale at my local Super Centre or Walmart... I put them all into pocket pages in chronological order along with memorabilia/souvenir stuff... Then I go through and decide if there's some I want to reprint larger as 4x6 for either pockets or their own layouts, and I will print some 5x7 if it's a special photo...
Having them all printed makes it easier for me to figure out what style of pocket pages, embellishments, filler/journaling cards, etc... Photos that I decide not to use either get slipped behind another in a pocket, made into a LO for my regular albums, or tossed... It's worth it to me to print or toss $10 of photos that don't make it in exchange for having them in albums... If I try to plan out that large a project before printing I don't ever get started...
Depends on what you like, but I print my photos with a white border so that I have a bit of extra room if I want to cut them down smaller to fit on a card... I like the look - even without embellishing they look unified/done somehow, but having that extra bit I can cut off without touching the photo means I don't cut away much of the actual picture if I cut it down...

penny - that is a really creative idea. I can see myself printing larger ones to scrapbook and putting all the pages in one 12x12 album. Thanks for sharing. I would never, ever have thought to print the smaller size.

I am another that scrapbooks 12x12 and includes pocket pages into the mix. We do quite a bit of camping and often there is many photos of fairly similar looking images be it photos around the campground and tents or landscape/views. I like to take maybe three of four really memorable moments or images and give them a whole 12x12 layout and all the others get slipped into pocket pages with a journal pocket or two. This way I just get so much more done and I can move onto the next layout or project.
