We've had the rod shelf thing with multiple containers, but that worked mainly for action figures, cars, and legos. My boys don't need a bunch of those right now.
There is one shelf at the top of the closet. In the closet currently is the tv and xbox. We are looking at getting a (free) flat screen to put on his short, wide dresser and that will clean out the closet. There is also an approximately 4 foot wall I could put a bookcase or something similar (would like it to be deeper).
The older boy has a very weird closet and it isn't big by any means. There is a small dresser in there that needs to be utilized more. He also has a small, tall dresser at the end of his bed and a desk in the corner. He has a 8 foot wall, but it is the side the door opens on, so four feet or so are unusable for anything.
I was thinking of getting the underdressers for them, but can see them crammed with crap.
What do you have in your teen/preteen rooms? Care to show pictures?

The most functional thing I've found that DD actually uses a lot is bins in cubbies. You could do a shelving unit like an expedit. Her bed is a platform with cubbies underneath instead of a box spring and frame. There are 3 on each side and we bought large black canvas bins. They hide all kinds of things and keep things organized nicely, too. She uses one for odd cheer items like hairpieces and bows, another for books, one for bathing suits, etc.

No pictures, but my kids (11 and 13) each have a 4x4 and 2x4 Expedit in their room. One goes in the main part of the room and the other is in the closet. Neither of them uses a dresser - shirts, pants and shorts go in folded stacks in the closet Expedit, and there are a couple of fabric pull out drawers for socks and underwear. Dresses, sweaters and that kind of thing are hung up.
In the main part of their rooms they have the other Expedit also with a couple of fabric drawers, and they each have a large desk. Books, knick knacks, etc. are on the shelves. They don't have TVs in their rooms, as both prefer to watch things on the iPad.

Clothes go on shelves and are hung in the closet with baskets for smaller items. The rest of the room has those cheap metal shelves you get at places like Target. This was taken right after I painted, and before the rest of the shelves were put in, but you can see the small shelf. The rest are just like it, but a little taller. There are matching black metal mesh bins to put smaller junk in. (excuse the crappy cell phone photo-and I hadn't yet replaced all the fixtures...)

My 12 year old has a closet with shelves and some drawers in addition to clothes rods so all of his clothes are stored there. In his room he has an 2x4 Expedit that has 4 canvas bins to hold toys, etc. and 4 open cubes to hold books. He also has a desk and a hanging 3 shelf unit from Ikea that he has all his trophies, etc. on display. There are also a couple under the bed storage containers that hold toys (although he really does't exactly "play" anymore).

My 16-year-old has a standard (wide) dresser with his flatscreen on top and a matching nightstand with drawers. The dresser holds all his folded clothes, and he uses the nightstand drawers for all his electronics, including his laptop. Because he's a big reader, he also has a four shelf open bookcase for both books and the various collectible crap kids pick up. His closet has a hanging sweater bin in it that he actually uses for shoes. The bottom of the closet has his dirty clothes hamper in it with long pants and button-up shirts hanging. Up top, things like sleeping bags and other stuff he doesn't need very often. Luckily, his bed is very high off the floor, so we've bought him long covered plastic storage bins which he uses for his art supplies. He also tucks his guitar under there. When we talked about getting him a storage bed with the drawers built in, he pitched a fit.
Luckily we don't have to worry about the Playstation and all his games. DS is an only, so he and DH share the mancave which houses all those kinds of things!
