We will be driving home, and the legs from LA (Orange County) to Portland are an unknown to either of us. We have 3 or 4 days. We could push it to 5 days, but don't really want to. We'll have our dog with us, so have to take him into consideration.
Where would you stop overnight? What would you stop to see?
Any other suggestions or things we should not miss?
Thanks

Are you looking at taking the PCH or staying more inland on the 5?

Anywhere from Monterey to SF would be a good stop. I also think Coos Bay in OR is an interesting stop, although you might think that is too close to your final stop in OR.

Bend, Crater Lake and/or Ashland would make nice stops along the way....pretty different from each other too!

There's a great place to stay in Ashland OR called Lithia Springs Resort. It is amazing! And...they have some dog friendly units.

oh, the Lithia Springs Resort looks lovely. If we stayed there, we'd have to add a bit of time to actually enjoy it.
Looking at google maps, if we were to go to Coos Bay, we'd be staying along the coast rather than going inland. Which we can certainly do.
Our route from Portland will to go through Spokane and then back to Calgary.
It's easy to just plot a route on google maps, but adding in all of the things that make it a a great road trip is the tough part.

if you cross the columbia east of the mountains, check out the Maryhill museum and the stonehenge replica at Maryhill Wa. I would do the ashland, crater lake, bend, route...then back over to the willamette valley. you could drive from sf up 101...drive through the redwoods, and north of crescent city drive to grants pass up the smith (?) river. there are the Oregon Caves on that route. I hate 1-5 north of the bay area...too hot and too boring. but shasta is pretty...there is mt lassen and burney falls that are neat.

Ashland is great little town....if you go that way, stop in Jacksonville too!

Crater Lake is a great place to visit. The drive there is really pretty too. Becky's cafe at Union Creek has really good pie.

Bend, Crater Lake and/or Ashland would make nice stops along the way....pretty different from each other too! Bend is in the middle of Oregon, not on the way to Portland at all. It is lovely, but would be quite a detour.

Once you hit Oregon I would drive up the coast, it is so very different than the Southern California coast and has lots of neat little places to stop. If you do go that way you should hit Tillamook to visit the cheese factory and enjoy some ice cream.

My home away from home is Newport Oregon. Another great spot on the other side of Newport is Neah Bay. The Heceta Head lighthouse is must and the look out point. Avoid the Sealion caves because you can see most of them from Strawberry Hill and the lighthouse lookout spot. It's just an hour or so south of Newport and Newport is about 4hrs south of Portland. Newport Aquarium is my 1st favorite aquarium next too Monteray Bay in SF. There are so many amazing seafood places I can send you a list. My family still lives in Newport and a sister in Portland. I get an itch to go up there twice a year. but it's been a while, time to go again. The Oregon Coast is amazing!!! Take your time!

A stop in crescent city in northern CA to see the redwoods would be worth your while. We were just there and stopped to see the Trees of Mystery. Very fun and interesting. We also love Banden OR which is very close to Coos Bay, it's a charming seaside town with some amazing uncrowded beaches.
