I'm a "sometimes stamper" for layouts and a few cards. I have all my ink pads jumbled in three Iris cart drawers, not very efficient, and I'm looking for some order to the madness. Do you separate yours by color or by type of ink or some other way, and why? (I'll tackle new storage once I get a clue as to how to organize!) Any hints appreciated

I want to know too. Mine are in a plastic tub. I've Google stamp storage and get lots of ideas but none seem to fit my style. I'm thinking about making or asking my dad to make me something.

From what I can see, you have your inks separated by manufacturer and then by color in a ROYGBIV fashion. Do you sort your different ink types at all, i.e., dye, pigment, chalk, etc., or just keep them by manufacturer?

I use wooden tape cases that I find at thrift stores.... They have Napa valley on the side. I sort by manufacturer..,I don't have so many that colors need sorted on any specific way. Dye are separate from pigment. Chalks have their own place and stazons are separate.

I finally found the storage that works for me. I bought a rotating CD case tower at the thrift store and made shelves for it with foam core from the $ Tree. It's perfect. I stamp so much more now. I also have another tower as back up in case (or when) my ink storage grows.

I keep my inks in multiple places. My Distress, CTMH, and other full size ink pads in drawers in my card catalog. I keep my prima chalk edgers in ArtBin Solutions boxes. I keep my Cats Eye and Dew Drops in a spinning rack on my desktop made for K-cups And my Stampin Up ink I keep upstairs in my "satellite" craft area in my bedroom in a Michaels gift wrapping cart. (love this the most, they are right at my fingertips - now I have way more than in the photo)

I so need help on this too. I have my old SU! dye inks in the SU! ink carousal with my most used (versamark, memento, and archival). And I keep the 3 sets of SU! craft (pigment pads) that are in their original boxes and on top of a shelf. then all other inks are in a cube bin. If I had space to organize the large pads would be organized by type (dye, chalk, pigment, hybrid). I've seen this idea with media sticks and I like it.
But what to do with those little dew drops and cat's eye pads?

I have mine in small 5 drawer Sterilite containers. I try to keep like with like, and in ROYGBIV order. I can normally keep 2 layers of inks in each drawer but I can't double up the dew drops so I have to put full pads on top of them, though I have been thinking about changing that a little bit.

I have my pads in photo boxes. My mini's...ugh, I can't think of the name of them (small and look like eyes). I keep those in a tub. Although those aren't used much because I totally forget that I have them. I don't have wall space to hang anything and the back of my door has my punches on it.

Thank you ladies for your tips, pictures and humor! I did the deed: emptied out my mess of inks and sorted them by type of ink (pigment and dye), then by manufacturer and lastly by color. I managed to condense three full Iris drawers down to two! Amazing what a little sorting effort does! Now the trick is keeping them organized after I use them....

This thread is right on time for me. I just bought one of the Napa valley cassette holders on eBay to hold the inks but hadn't gotten to the organizing part yet. I'll go with the by manufacturer then by color. Thanks for the suggestion ladies!

For the cat's eyes and Memento dew drops, I use a jewelry case I bought at Michaels. It's a plastic divided case, in the bead section, and it holds them perfectly.

I have shallow drawers in my IKEA Besta cabinet that I keep them in... My Distress inks, ink marker (all brands), ombré ink pads, sample tags, and blending tools are in one... I only have a few large ones so those are stacked, and the minis are in Tim Holtz containers sorted by colour... All others are in the other drawer - StazOn are stacked, large pads are stacked, and Dew Drop, Prima Chalk, cat eye, and those small square ones are in one layer... I've lined them up by colour only - for most of what I do chalk vs dye doesn't matter...

I have my inks all organized in an Iris black 6 drawer rolling cart. Each drawer holds a manufacture's ink. Sometimes they are combined. The bottom drawer is full of my Adirondack dye inks. One drawer is full of Colorbox full size and cat's eyes. The cat's eyes are stored in small plastic containers to hold them secure and not scattered all over the drawer. Makes them much easier to pull out and pluck out the one I need. And so on.
I made an ink binder where I stamped each ink I had on a piece of small white cardstock and labelled it. I put these in color order not carrying what type of ink it was or what the manufacture was although I put that information on the label. I also made a master chart of each manufacture like Colorbox with squares and stamped each color in those squares.
When I need an ink color it's easy and fast for me to pull that binder, sort through the color samples, choose one, and then pull that pad from the drawer.
I'm a clutter hater-it clogs my creativity and I think much better if everything is hidden in drawers or behind doors. I think I would love a storage system like those by organize more but right now this is working just fine. One day I hope to get one of those to try it out, because it would be so nice to have on my desk and quick to pull. It is also very neat looking and I don't think would look too cluttered.

I bought a bunch of Recollections storage cubes from Michael's, hubby spent the weekend assembling them for me. They have a set that looks like it has 9 drawers (it's really made up of 3 drawers, with removable dividers that breaks it up into 9 units). I am going to use these to organize most of my stamps. I don't mind having them stored as it will be less tempting for my little ones to get into.

I keep them in (4) 5 x 7 photo holders (Iris). I put a piece of black foam on the bottom of the case so that they don't slip around at all. I store them color side up to see easier and turn the whole case upside down when I am not using them. They travel well and don't take up much space.

Right now I do like you do with my inks in an Iris cart and I hate it. I don't like having to dig through the stacks to find what I want. I think I'd like to do the wall mounted CD strips but I'm not sure where exactly they should go. I kind of wanted to have all of my stamping, card making and mixed media stuff all together in one place, but it might make more sense to have the ink pads right by my desk which is across the room from where I want to store all the other stuff. I'm just going to wait until I actually get to the point where I'm actively working on stuff again before I make any permanent decisions!

I do a modified version of Jennifer McGuire's system that she talks about here www.jennifermcguireink.com/2013/10/video-ink-storage-discount-code-giveaway.htmlInstead of cabinets or specialty ink holders, mine are all in an IKEA Raskog card, standing up on their short ends in rows. I've used the same label maker she does to label the short end that is showing with the manufacturer and ink name, but I only labeled that one side of the pad instead of all four sides like she does (and I also skipped the colored dots in her updated system). I also used her swatch downloads to make my own swatch book, and that has been the single most helpful think I've ever done for my inks. I don't bother to sort the pads by color in the cart- I just keep them separated by manufacturer- and then let the swatch book take care of the color part for me. It is working REALLY well, and I love that my inks are in a rolling cart so I can move them around my craft room or even out to the living room if I want to work there.

Wouldn't that make the ink in the pad unevenly distributed to one end? I have a lot of colors I use infrequently and I'd be afraid that half the pad would be saturated and the other end would be dried out.

Before I used a Raskog cart, I stored my inks on their sides in an IKEA Alex drawer (and you can see that Jen McGuire does the same with some of hers in the post that I linked) for over 2 years. They're still all evenly inked and work well.
