...They will not stop charging you. Don't trust me just be smarter than me and google ancestry consumer complaints. or ancestry reviews. I signed up and cancelled several times including days after I first signed up, keep getting charged. I know I can dispute with my credit card company but they bank on the fact that it is a hassle.
I fell for their homey, family, nice image they portray and did not realize what a horrible reputation they have.
I have only myself to blame because I never checked them out online.

I previously had a trial with them and had no problem canceling. I never incurred any charges I shouldn't have.
I have other family members who use the site and love it.
I'm sorry you had troubles with the cancellation, but calling them a scam is going a bit too far IMO. They obviously have a customer service issues they need to rectify if multiple people are having this problem, but they do provide a legitimate and valuable service that millions of people use.

Thank you for saving me a hassle later. I know I have looked at the site, considered signing up for the free trial but was waiting until I had time to really utilize it.

Sort of off-topic, but I just found out that our county library system has free access to ancestry.com, so those of you who were thinking of the free trial, may want to check with your libraries first.

I have done it several times and never had any problem with them. It isn't really a scam.

I had never heard bad things either but once I signed up it was a nightmare. It has been ever since. I have "cancelled" multiple times. I think it may be find until you try to cancel, then the problems start. Just google them for reviews and you will see many similar stories. Just never give them your credit card number. Once you do, you are in trouble. They have had 488 Better Business Bureau complaints in the state of Utah alone.

Ancestry is not a scam. I've never heard of their "horrible reputation" either. I sign up and cancel all the time based on my schedule to have the time to use it, and have never had a problem. If I did, I would contact them about it. You don't say that you contacted Ancestry about the problem. Did you try and what was the outcome? Based on my years of experience with Ancestry, I think it could very well be a user issue. __________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Okay, after typing that, I did what you suggested and googled Ancestry reviews. Apparently, all the major publications give them 4.5 to 5 stars --- out of 5. There was also an article about canceling, you might want to check it out. Is Ancestry.com a scam?

I'm not sure why you are so angry. When you sign up for the trial, they make it clear that you'll will be charged if you don't cancel before the trial is over. I know when I started, I have easily cancelled and restarted my charges several times through account settings. I'm sorry you are angry or didn't realize, but you really need to be a little more diligent, read through the contract and be proactive when it comes to cancelling on time. It's not a scam.

I didn't have any trouble cancelling my trial period. But now I just go to my library and search on their account. I can email myself the documents that I find. I don't know if this is a new feature, but it is great. Before I had to print off my findings and then pay the library 20 cents per copy.

Mostly about billing issues and mostly resolved to complainants' satisfaction. BBB still rates them A+.

I've never tried ancestry.com but have always had it in the back of my mind to do so. I don't know whether to think this is a scam or not. In googling, I found this article concerning various sites, including ancestry.com, that promote a bogus family history book. I've also seen the ads concerning family coat of arms but never checked into it because my maiden name is not common and doubted that there was a coat of arms for that particular name. This site has various complaints about ancestry.com. I'm not sure what to believe at this point.

As for complaints, I think youneed to consider how many satisfied customers there are vs. how many unhappy ones before making a decision.

They parent company has been around since 1983 and the website since 1996. They have over 2MM paid subscribers and ~1300 employees.
They are not a "scam." A poor customer service experience is very different than a scam.

I used them for a while but don't have enough information to figure out who is part of my family. Once I got to the early 1900s I didn't know who was my family and who just had same name. On my dad's side I couldn't get any info on him at all. It was an exercise in frustration since I don't have family members to ask. So I canceled, with no problems.

I've never known of anyone that had a problem with ancestry and canceling the free trial.
Try this. Go into Ancestry.com - select MY ACCOUNT under your username (drop down list) Then select cancel subscription.
Try again and see if it works...couldn't hurt.

And if you are having issues, there is a clearly marked toll free line to call where they assist you. The terms of use is there to be read. They are extremely clear that you have to cancel before your trial is up. To call it a scam is hyperbole.

They're not a scam. They're a reputable company that's been around for years. Like others, I've used their free trial and cancelled with no issue. Sounds more like a user error issue, honestly.

The problems are with the consumer for the most part. You have to cancel at least the day before your subscription/free trail is up and they give you a cancellation confirmation number. If you snooze they will indeed charge you.

I've done their free trial and had no problem cancelling. I've had monthly memberships for months at a time, and then cancelled with no problem. I have a membership right now and will continue to do so as I'm working on my family history.
