There is stuff to pour on a stump to kill it that is not supposed to bother the plants around it, but it just seems like round up, like others have said, would have killed their stuff too. Are you sure it's not a disease or something specifically for killing tree roots but not other stuff? (like you can buy weed killer that won't kill grass) The tree company we called said there are specific tree killers that they could have poured on it that wouldn't have killed the other stuff. They said at this point some of them would show up in testing but a lot of them wouldn't. If we decide to plant a tree in its place, we will have the soil tested for sure. They checked the tree and there is wasn't any kind of disease.

(I hate round up but that's just not what I've seen it do). It's really unfortunate. I'm sorry. I would be really upset.

Ugh, that's so sad that they ruined a perfectly good tree in your yard.
There definitely should be no cookie plate this year.

Oh my, that is sad. Looks like it used to be a nice tree. I agree, no more cookies.

Is anyone else not seeing a pic? Is there a link that I'm not seeing or is it right in the thread and not showing for me for some reason?

That is so sad....something they did affected your tree - there is too much of a coincidence....
If it were me, I might try to put a bush/shrub of some sort in the space, something that will be green and fill the space.

Yes, I can see it now. Thanks.
Wow, that is sad. I would have guessed that tree had been dead for ages!

Gosh, I'm sorry. We had three trees removed last year out of necessity and I REALLY miss the privacy they provided. I'd be boiling mad if it had been from a negligent neighbor.

Thanks for updating us. It does seem as though the tree killing was intentional. I'm sorry to hear that your relationship with your neighbor has been effected.

What disruption is there in planting a tree? I think it would be way easier than extending the retaining wall or adding a water feature (which would both me nice, though.) When they remove the tree, be sure to ask to have the stump removed. Go to a garden center and plant a tree in the old hole. Trees really aren't that expensive--at least the smaller ones are not. If you go with a more decorative tree, many of them grow quickly. Not "in a year it will be back to where we started", but quicker than you may think. But I would definitely have the soil tested to see if it will sustain a tree. Who knows what the neighbor dumped on the stump or if he did dump it around your trees. If may dissolve away quickly or it may still be in the ground. I hope you find some peace with this soon. I don't blame you one bit for being mad! Good point...no matter what we do it is going to be a "thing". Maybe I need to find out more about the removal process. They didn't have the stumps removed from their yard so I don't know what looks like. Does it cost significantly more? I hadn't even thought about the fact that they might be willing to pay for it to be cut down but not the stump removed since that is what they did. We don't want to pay for the soil testing. We looked into and it is more than we want to put into it. And we don't want to confront the neighbors and say they need to pay for it. Us saying we want them to pay for the soil testing is basically telling them we think they are liars, which is what we think but we don't want to go there. We just don't see what it would get us in the long run since I don't think either of us is moving anytime soon. So since we don't want to go there (and maybe we should...I don't know) we know we shouldn't plant another tree if we don't know what is in the soil. Maybe I will feel differently once the tree is gone. Maybe I need to get a little more gutsy.... We had trouble getting grass to grow on the lawn at work. My boss called the university of Ga agricultural department. They sent out tubes. We collected the soil and they analyzed it for free and sent back the results. The whole process took less than 6 weeks maybe a local or state university has an agricultural department. It wouldn't hurt to look into it. We were told what was in the soil and what to do However it was too much trouble in the end to replace all the soil etc. so we just put in fake grass. It looks beautiful and it looks real especially in pictures. It's funny to watch people lean down to touch it to see if it is real. It has some flecks of brown and looks like rye grass. It never has to be mowed. We just blow it. It is green all year which is a must as we do weddings in the lawn. The down side was to get grass that looked the most like real grass it cost around $30,000.

I used to have a neighbor that sprayed gasoline on the fence line to kill weeds. Not sure what it would have done to a tree. That pic is terrible, I would be extremely irritated.

OP, I would expect them to pay for full removal and soil testing. When/if they complain I would reply with, "well the garden center recommended it since we have to if the new tree we are putting there will be ok." Don't back down, don't blink, don't waver. Just smile and stare them down ( of course in a neighborly non-threatening way ) Who cares if you don't put a tree there. They don't need to know that. Do you have kids or pets? You want to leave some toxic stump in your yard to keep the peace??? Hell to the no.
