I wonder if somehow the microchip number has been re-used. 25 years old is incredibly old and while he doesn't look young it seems unbelievable that a cat that old could survive as a stray.
I am hoping that someone, somewhere will recognise him and come forward to tell us his story. It is indeed a curious tale.

Wow! I wish he could talk....and tell his story. I wish they could find this cat's original owner before he goes to kitty heaven
My SIL had a cat that lived to the age of 22.

What an intriguing story - I'm hoping there will be a follow-up news update after all this publicity!

That's interesting. If only the cat could talk. I'm sure he'd tell quite a story. I wonder if his owners will see him and come forward.

That's quite an age for a cat.
I'm sure someone will claim it after the publicity though,he has a collar so has obviously been looked after somewhere before he got lost. I would imagine his original owner came over to the UK from Australia at one time and forgot to update the database with their new location. According to the report he's been "lost" before though.......quite a little wanderer it seems!

I wonder if their was a typo in the database and he's actually 15. I'm thinking it was pretty rare to microchip a cat 25 years ago - I think that was early in microchip technology.

It did strike me that it seemed a long time ago but since we have only had our pet for a few years I didn't know how far back the technology went.
I hope when he wasn't wandering that he was loved fiercely.

What an amazing kitty! I also think he came over from Australia with his owner and that person just forgot to update the information with the database. I really hope his owners find him or if not, that he gets adopted (which will probably happen given all of this publicity).
I know microchipping goes back 17 years because Biru was microchipped. I'm not sure about 25 years.
Can you think of any of your Pets that have passed, or are still living that are older than 17 that are/ were microchipped?

I really don't know much about microchipping pets, but you don't have to do it when they are newborns; this cat could have had it done anytime in the past. So, one fact has nothing to do with the other.

So, one fact has nothing to do with the other. Most people microchip their pets, not when they are newborns, but when they are taken in to be spayed or neutered. Since the pet is already under anesthesia, it makes the most sense in terms of $$ and pet comfort to do it at that time. And most pets are spayed/neutered before they are 1 yo. I am still betting on database error issues regarding birth year.

All cats and dogs are required by law to be microchipped in Australia. Usually done at 10-20 weeks. True, it's done later also, but usually that occurs if the body rejects the chip and pushes it out -this happened to our last kitten. But there are several different types of microchips used throughout the world, (I know this from when we tried to bring our dog from US to Australia) I'm impressed that the chip could be read in Ireland. I vote for some sort of mistake in database.

According to my Google search the microchip database was started in 1996. Of course, the cat could have been microchipped last week and the owner could have put his birthday down as 1945. The only thing they do know for sure is that he is at least 11 since he was checked in 2004. He sure is a handsome boy, I hope he gets a home this time!
