My plan for our July vacation was Mackinac Island, but I never got around to planning it (way too much life happening lately) and now I'm just hoping I can find a nice place to stay (hotel is fine) or house to rent on a nice summery beach in Michigan for a week next month. We're in Southern Ohio and didn't get to do our regular North Carolina beach trip this year, but really want a beach without a long drive. Any ideas?

We're from the east coast and just returned from a trip to the Northern Peninsula in Michigan. It is so beautiful there. We traveled north from Chicago through Wisconsin and Michigan in to Canada. I don't remember the names of the beaches but IMO any are beautiful.

is july at mackinac island still out? I've been looking at hotels on the mainland beach these last couple weeks, and there were still openings for 4th of july weekend. if those are still open, you'd probably have luck for a week that month. there's a nice one called mackinaw mill creek that has tent, rv or cabin tenting, with lake and bridge views. or, there were some hotels within walking distance of the downtown and ferry on the beach. barring that, IMO the west side has the best large, sandy beaches. but since we live here, I never stay and therefore can't recommend anything specific.

Good luck! The popular places book up FAST. The time is now to book it.
South Haven, Grand Haven, Saguatuck, Pentwater, Ludington are among my favorite places on Lake Michigan. As you go further north, I'd stay away from towns close to the bridge and go a little further west or east if you want to be near the island.

We stayed in cabins in St Ignace. It was fun but very little amenities. the beach was was right across the road. Balsam Resort. It was a step back in time!

I don't remember the names of the beaches but IMO any are beautiful. No offense meant, but it's the Upper Peninsula, not the Northern Peninsula.

I would still go to Mackinac Island. Even if you don't/can't stay on the island, there are so many hotel options in Mackinaw City and in St. Ignace.

Mackinaw City is great and an easy ferry ride to the island. I also love Traverse City...lots of great places to stay on the bay. For something smaller you might look into Manistee or Frankfort. Great beaches can be found all along Lake Michigan. Traverse City has their cherry festival in July...tons to see and do.

Thank you so much for all the suggestions. It's a rainy day here so I'm going to get a cup of tea and a cat and sit and check everything out. I'd love to find something on the island still. I don't think I looked closely enough before. I felt rushed with the short amount of time I have to plan something. So, crossing my fingers, starting to do some real research!

As a previous poster mentioned, Ludington, Pentwater, and Silver Lake.

My favorite place is Beaver Island off the coast of Charlevoix. I hope to take my husband there next summer, just the two of us.
