My mom has been having severe chest pains for the past 4 days so I took her to the ER yesterday. They couldn't tell us anything yesterday after running a bunch of tests and today they are doing a procedure/operation where they put something into her hand to see if she has a blockage. I just missed her phone call and can't reach her now, so I thought I would ask the peas if they've ever experienced something like this, what it turned out to be? What exactly is this procedure she's having done now? My mom is 79 and this is the first time she's had chest pains. Only other health problems are high cholesterol and swollen feet for which a knee replacement was recommended but she hasn't had done yet.

Mine turned out to be a gall stone moving. Has she been checked for gall stones?

I don't know, that sounds so much better than a heart attack. She only feels the pain when she's standing and walking, not sitting or lying.

Sounds like a heart cather... You better be doing some more finding out... I have about eight of them ... No playing around ... They go up through the the vein to the heart

My Dad has an almost 19 year history with heart disease, which just resulted in a bypass 3 weeks ago.
Something in her hand sounds odd. They can go through the artery in the wrist to do a heart catheterization...basically they thread a thin wire through to assess the blockages and can treat then (balloon) then while in there if they find them.
My father has had more than a few of these catheterizations (they go through the groin generally, but it's newer to go through the wrist.) Only other real diagnostic things he's had were stress tests where they monitor you on a treadmill.
Have no heard of any other procedures that might fit. Hope she gets a quick diagnosis and is feeling better soon. The catheterizations are an easy procedure if she is having one of those. Oftentimes they can be released that day unless it involves using stents in the artery.

It sounds like she's having an heart cath. They thread a scope up through the vasculature into the heart either through hand/wrist access or groin access.

They are probably going up through an artery in her wrist to do a heart cath. That will tell them if she has any blockages. They may do stents if needed. If her heart looks ok, then they may send her home and have her follow up as an outpatient to look for other causes of pain, or they may address it further while she's there depending on how she's doing.

When I was there they mentioned doing a stress test on a treadmill and I had to laugh, my mother is a very slow walker. So the heart cath through her wrist just sounds like a routine easy procedure? My mother was nervous as if it might a surgery.

I had chest pains (in my late 30s) that sent me to the ER in the middle of the night-- they ended up finding out it was pleurisy, which is an inflammation of the lining of my chest cavity, I think.
but only when she's standing and walking, that is strange-- maybe something related to her back or hip that's transferring the pain to her chest somewhere?

My mother was nervous as if it might a surgery. If she is unable to use the treadmill they can use chemicals. That is how mine was done even though I could have used the treadmill. It is an easy procedure to go through but it takes hours.
