My daughter left on a road trip to Orlando and decided to leave her DSLR at home. Knowing her and her absentmindedness, probably a wise decision but now she is wondering about photos at DW. I have tried looking up info on line but it is all so confusing and I can't find reviews/opinions that are helpful. Have any of the Disney loving peas ever purchased one of the photo packages, possibly the cd with all pics or individual? Are they worth it? Any suggestions that I can text her? She doesn't think her iPhone or pocket camera will be good enough. So glad she decided to think of this after she left, not. Any info would help so that she waste a lot of money but we all know that pics are the one of best reminders of our trips

A pocket camera (I'm assuming it's decent, since she has a DSLR) and her phone will be fine during daylight hours. Night photos may not look as good, but she won't have to lug her DSLR all day. That's a win for me. And I LOVE my DSLR, but did not bring it with me to Paris last year. My pocket camera (a Canon S100) did a great job and I was happy I left my big, heavy camera home. It's a trip to Disney World, not her wedding.

I think her pocket camera is great. What I did before is have the cast members take the photo at major focal areas and then afterwards she can review and decide if she wants the photo pkg. You don't have to pay up front for it. And when she has the cast member take their photo have them take one with her camera as well. Then when she gets home she can figure out if she wants the photo pkg or just singles. I didn't do a package because I only wanted the 5x7s and figured I would scan and then shrink down smaller photos at home.

On our last Disney trip (Dec.2013) I only took pics with my cell phone. I carried an extra phone battery around so I could switch it out. Most of the pics turned out great. My point and shoot camera got left in the room after the first day.
The Photopass (I think they call it Memory Maker now)is expensive - $199 if you purchase after your arrival. We paid less because we purchased it early, and we split the cost with the other people traveling with us. I have to say, the part I liked best was getting all the ride photos. If you ask, the Photopass photographers will use your camera to take the same pics they'd take with their fancy camera. Might not turn out as great, but still good. And no special effects - like Tinker Bell landing on your hand or flying around your head.
Even if you don't purchase the Photopass package, you can still order individual pics online. They're $15 or more each, though.

The ride photos might be something to consider but then again, $200 might be better spent on activities. I will pass on the info about cast members using her camera and looking to order pics on line later. I didn't even know that was option, the later part, and in her case might be the best because I have seen how she throws things in bags willy-nilly and they get ruined. If she did do the Memory Maker, is that for just DW? They are doing Hollywood Studios and Blizzard Beach, neither that I have ever been to. She is toting a Canon SD1100 that really takes decent shots for a point and shoot and she did get a battery backup for her phone so she wouldn't go "dead" while out all day. Honestly, how much it is to run into Walmart or Target and pick up an inexpensive little camera that can slip in your pocket? Probably less than a photo package provided by Disney. If it is just the 'catch the mood of the moment' photos, you don't need professional quality.
Just remind her, while she is there to pick up one of those cheap rain ponchos. It has been raining like crazy every day.

It has been raining like crazy every day. And that may be what she will do with her point and shoot. I did remind her to stop by Walmart for the waterproof disposable cameras for her day at Discovery Cove. I have told her to choose carefully what pics she decides to buy as that cuts into her activites budget but figured I could arm her with the costs so she can decide. I KNOW she will buy a photo package of her Beluga interaction at SeaWorld and no personal cameras are allowed for that one. I tossed her a couple extra ponchos as she was headed out the door yesterday morning. I reminded her that it WILL rain each and every day. Thank you for letting me know that it is crazier than maybe anticipated and I will text that info to her. I tried to stress the heat you mentioned previously and said that it will be far, far more than she anticipates. I am jealous of their trip but not envious of her boyfriend who will likely be enduring her whining about the heat.

Orlando radar A big storm just rolled through, it was pretty icky.

I use my phone for some pictures - if she has a newer phone, it is probably fine for snapshots. I also carry a pocket camera. I haven't purchased the Memory Maker/Photo Pass on all trips, but I have on some. I didn't get my money's worth last trip, but I do like getting the ride pictures. They are pretty expensive if you buy them at the end of the ride. She could also do Memory Maker and just buy a few of her favorites (though they are expensive individually).

I think she will be fine with her phone and pocket camera. She can had either/both to any Disney photographer and they'll take her picture with it. We did PhotoPass for the first time on our last trip and with the exception of the ride photos, I didn't feel it was really worth it. I don't care for the pictures where they insert special effects. Often the photos taken by the Disney Photographer with their camera were worse than the ones they took with my point and shoot. I certainly wouldn't pay full price for the PhotoPass deal.

I know some people love the PhotoPass. I came away feeling somewhat the same as the above poster. For the price, I didn't feel it was worth it. The photos we got were just okay. Often times there were things in the background that if I had been taking the picture would have easily cropped out like a garbage can etc. You also have to wait sometimes for the PP photographer so that can slow things down a bit too.
