I have dealt with very dark underarms for most of my life. Nothing I have ever tried seems to help and I'm getting really tired of my family members commenting on it. I decided to look up bleaching products on Amazon and there is quite a range of prices and brands. Most of them have mixed reviews with many people raving about the product and equally as many people saying the product did nothing.
Have any of the peas used a skin bleaching product with success?

I have melasma on my face and the only thing I've tried that actually works has hydroquinone as the active ingredient, so I'd look for something that has it. My dark spots can be evened out some with makeup though, so I don't know if they are as dark as what you may be trying to lighten.

Talk to a dermatologist before you do anything, please.

I've heard of that ingredient but I'm wondering if it's prescription only as none of the items I'm seeing online seem to list it. Everything I'm finding is from "natural" ingredients which in my mind means it must not work LOL. As much as I'd like to go to a dermatologist to get this and other things taken care of, there's a long list of other expenses I have to take care of first before a $200 dermatologist appt.

I use a product that I get at Ulta that's OTC...there's a night cream and a day cream. It takes 3-4 weeks for me to start seeing results, but I think it does help. Here it is on Amazon: Reviva Skin Lightening CreamI don't use both anymore because it's a bit thick and it made me break out, so I only use the night cream as the day cream has SPF in it. Also, it's good to know that when you first get it, it's white but then it discolors when you start using it, but that doesn't mean it's gone bad or anything, it just happens. Read somewhere why but don't remember now...

What does dark underarms mean? The skin in your armpit is dark? Your family comments on it? I know a lot of non-caucasian people and I have never heard once of someone making a comment about someone's underarm. They make comments about their complexions being dark, suntanned, etc. but never an armpit.

They make comments about their complexions being dark, suntanned, etc. but never an armpit. I am Caucasian and the skin of my armpit (ick I hate that word for some reason) is dark. The pigment of the skin in that area is very dark brown/grey. It looks dirty, like I haven't washed myself in, oh, say 10 years or so. My family feels the need to point out the fact that my underarms look dirty and "weird" all the time for some reason. My mom tells me I shouldn't wear tank tops. I know I'm clean and there's a lot of people out there with this problem so I have always tried not to let it bother me. I wear tank tops and swimsuits like a regular person. Lately though the comments are starting to bother me and I figure I might try (once again) to find a product to help.

Yes I have read that. Mine have been dark since I was a teenager so I don't think that is necessarily the cause.

I had the same issue, but it's gone away since I stopped using deodorant and I quit shaving my pits. I don't have a lot of armpit hair, so I pluck them, and I use a deodorant crystal. It's worth a try for you. I get the deodorant at Sprouts or Whole Foods.

I will take a look for them. Thanks for the suggestions!

I got laser hair removal and it worked great for 6 months then started growing back. it grows slower now but I do have to shave.
Tina I have to say this but I am offended for you with the comments your mother makes about your under arms. So you have greyish/dark underarms. So what? I have naturally dark hair. Big deal! Could you tell her to stop firmly but nicely but FIRMLY. This is NOT ok.
if you can't afford to see a dermatologist could you see a naturopath? This to me might be another course to try (I am not sure I have any faith in them but who knows?)
Or you could say EFF IT and leave it alone. God* made you that way so be it!
*God=whatever higher power you believe in or Mother Nature etc.

I read bleach as beach and thought you were asking for a nude beach recommendation.

I would have a chat with your doctor. There are several treatable medical conditions which cause this that ought to be ruled out.

I spent most of my life up to age 18 being teased and made fun of about various body things I have no control over. I've developed a fairly thick skin. I fully embraced the "eff it this is the way I am" mindset for many years but I think because this is actually coming from my family now that it's bothering me. It's one thing when a stranger lets you know you look nasty and another when it comes from your mom and aunts. I snapped at her a couple of weekends ago over it and I think/hope she gets it now. I read bleach as beach and thought you were asking for a nude beach recommendation.

Alpha Hydrox Spot Light (i buy on Amazin since it's hard to find in stores)and Equate(walmart brand)Dark Spot Correction Skin Lightener, both contain 2% Hydroquinone. I use these for Melasma. They work ok, if you stay out of the sun. I have also read that lemon juice helps lighten dark spots. Try googling "skin lighteners" for more options. Hope you find something that works for you.

You should see a doctor.
Also, what happens if it lightens unevenly and becomes splotchy?
Easier to tell people it is none of their business. Or ask them about something they are embarrassed about: do you want me to ask you about your nose, tummy, butt, fat thighs, whatever ( you know what bothers them) every time you say something? Then do it. You will have given them fair warning.

I have super light skin and super dark hair. I always had dark underarms until I had laser hair removal. The darkness was the hair that was showing through the skin. Good luck.

I think Dove makes an underarm antipers/deod that addresses this and restores the skin tone. I've seen it work first hand for a family memeber of mine.

I am sorry the people that should be the most supportive of you are the most rude.
Have you tried really exfoliating the area on a regular basis?

That is really rude and uncalled for. Nobody has the right to make rude comments about your body. I had to speak to my FIL many many years ago about commenting about my weight (which was perfectly normal) and he hasn't made comments for maybe 25 years now. He got the message and has been fine ever since. I wasn't mean and I didn't say it in anger, but I did make it clear that it was an unacceptable thing to comment about my body and I didn't like it. I hope your family gets the message like he did. I totally understand how you feel.
The concentration of hydroquinine that actually works (that and laser treatments) is a prescription, and it's expensive ($100 a tube?) and not usually covered by prescription plans. Costco pharmacy usually has it cheapest. Talk to your doctor about your options, and what might be causing it.
PS I recently talked to my doctor about getting rid of some sunspots on my face and that's what she told me.

My discoloration had only been happening for a few months, but within a month of using this the darkening had cleared up. It's cheap so probably worth trying.

I use hydroquinone on my face but it is prescription and expensive and I wouldn't use it on my armpits. I don't think dark pits look strange and people shouldn't be looking at them anyway. Tell people to bugger off.

I will look those up, thanks! I have Googled a lot and saw lemon juice and potatoes as possible options. I'm really skeptical of that stuff though but it's worth a shot I suppose. Yes I've been using that deodorant for about a year. It makes my skin nice and soft but hasn't had an effect on the color.
