Long story short, I became very ill two years ago. Since then, I've let my hair grow long in case of reoccurrence and chemo is needed. I'd like my own hair for a wig. For me, my hair represents a horrible year in my life, yet I survived it and still getting stronger. I also still have a brain tumor that's inoperable and I guess I let my hair help me forget about it between scans.
I'm already looked at funny for being over 40 and almost waist length hair. Now I want to go even crazier and put purple streaks in the back. Maybe just the under layers so it's not so bold. Then again, what's the point if you can't really see it.
Here's my hair, although the red has faded and it's mostly light brown and blond, plus it's a bit longer also. I work in a professional field if that matters (I'm an engineer so very little interaction with people outside) and I work with ALL men. I also have 3 boys (17, 14, 10) and don't want to embarrass them either.
What would your knee jerk reaction be if you saw me with purple hair streaked throughout the back? Would you think I'm attention seeking? I've been told that when mentioning wanting purple, which seems weird because I normally keep to myself.

Honestly? I'm not a fan of pink, purple, navy, green dyed hair on anyone, including kids. That being said, it's your hair, not mine.
I'm sorry you've fought your health issues, and hope you're feeling much better!

I'm not generally a fan of "unnatural" hair colors, either, but given your health situation, screw what others think and do what makes you happy!

I'm very sorry about what you've endured. It's your hair and if you want to make it purple you get to. Have fun with it. Be outrageous if you wish. I think it sounds really cool.

I would look into it with the company that would make the wig for you, which hopefully you will never need. Can they use hair that's been color treated? If so, go for it. It's only color and if you hate it, it can be undone.

If it's what you want, do it. I have several friends in their 60s that have purple stripes in their hair. I love it. Life is way too short to not have FUN.
My hair is as long as yours and wavy as well. I'm 52. It's my hair and my body, if someone doesn't like it (my mother, sigh), I really don't care. That's their issue, not mine.
You've had a tough time, doing what makes you happy is very important to your health. Go for it.

Maybe because I work in academia.. but long hair on a woman of any age is not unusual (we even have a contingent of men with enviable pony tails). And I see all kinds of color.. pink, purple, blue, teal, lemon yellow...
Wear what puts a smile in YOUR heart when you look at your hair or think about it.

I would think you are one cool chick and be a little envious that I wasn't as cool. :-)
You have beautiful hair!

You, sister, survived/are living with cancer which is a way more formidable battle than worrying about what colour your hair should be. If you want pink or teal or purple hair, you go for it. Your hair is part of your identity (if you want it to be).
That being said, if I had hair like the photo you posted, I would not do anything with it. Your hair is just amazing! The colour, texture, length, in other words everything is just perfect about it!
ETA I just enlarged the photo again. I so want your hair!!! The curls, the length, the volume...everything. I have serious hair envy going on. But that's my issue.
If you do dye it show us what you did. I love to see colour!!!

You have beautiful hair. If you want purple hair who cares what anyone else thinks. I see lots of adults with all colors of hair. I like it better when it's just a few sections of hair here and there rather than the whole head but it's your hair do it any way that makes you happy.
I hope you stay well and never need the wig.

You have a beautiful head of hair! You do what makes you feel good! I'm 52 and put pink streaks in my hair, made me feel young and sassy! I checked the "try a funky hair color" off my bucket list lol Go for it!

Honest reaction? "This woman is cool and I want to get to know her"
I love when people step outside the "norm" and do something fun. I also think age is just a number and you should live this life to the fullest!

Thank you all so much for the validation! I have a hair appointment set for Friday.
Thanks for the compliments on my hair. It can get pretty frizzy and big, but I'm finally learning how to control it. Only took me 40 years.

I think it's awesome that you are going to get it done. If I had hair that wasn't so thin ( and getting thinner ) I'd love to do the dip dyed look on the ends.

I'm going to tell you what a friend who is going through chemo told me. I ran into her and she was wearing a beautiful scarf on her head. She said this, "cancer is ugly, but I'm beautiful and I deserve to look good". You do what makes you feel good. It's not about what we think. It's about what makes you feel pretty while dealing w/an ugly disease.

Would I ever do it - heck no, but a Mom at school added bright pink highlights to her blonde hair and it looked amazing. I say do it. It's hair.

I'd say yes go for it. Age is just a number, and if I saw you I'd think awesome. I lost mine last year, was completely bald and proud, I never worried about what people thought I was happy
