Hi Refupeas,
My husband and I are celebrating our 25th anniversary this October and we have decided to take a trip to New England to see the beauty of the leaves turning. I used to live in New Hampshire when I was very little but I don't know enough about the area to remember all the cool things to do and fun places to visit. We want to combine leaf peeping as well as historical places to visit. We would also like suggestions of where to drive, eat and stay. We will probably fly into Boston and start there. Thanks for any suggestions you can offer. I'm so excited to go back to the beautiful area that I remember from when I was a child!

We took a late September trip to Boston, Maine, Cape Cod and New Hampshire. We stayed at Omni Mount Washington Resort in NH. It's was beautiful and while Massachusetts and Maine not in full color, New Hampshire was. (It was a very warm summer, so the leaves were taking their time turning.) We also stayed in South Harbor, Maine. B & B was not great there.
We have friends who just spent 5 days in Boston and said it was 2 days too long. We were only there 2 days and it was perfect.

You usually can't go wrong anywhere in New England during autumn. The thing to remember is it changes fast and when depends on where you are. For example I usually take my vacation the last 2 weeks of Sept in Northern VT. Most years it is peak by the time we come home, but it is still changing in the southern regions on VT. I think the timing is the hardest part because it really just depends on the year. The Maine coast is beautiful in the fall, The White mountains of NH and the Kancamagus Highway are also quite spectacular. The Northeast Kingdom, Burlington, and The Lake Champlain region of VT(actually all of VT) are gorgeous. Any Small New England town, Cape Cod, etc. would also be great additions to a fall travel itinerary. I guess it more depends on what type of things you want to do and see... because the scenery will most likely be beautiful anywhere in New England. Sorry I am not more help.
