Dh told DS16 that if he hit 400 during school ball this year he'd buy him a puppy. DS has been wanting a Jack Russell Mix for awhile now. He hit 575! He is playing two baseball leagues this summer so we convinced him getting a dog right now wasn't practical for training purposes right now. However, he still wanted a puppy and even picked out a name for when he got one. "400". This weekend while at a baseball tournament 3 hrs from home MIL tagged me in a post for Jack Rusell/Rat Terrier puppies. DS was playing ball at the time so I called MIL and arranged with her to meet with the seller and pick out/ purchase a puppy for us and keep him until we arrived back in town on Sunday. We also cooked up a plan to surprise DS. the two youngest were in on the plan but not DS's best friend who was on the trip with us. We told the boys that grandma needed us to stop by the house so the boys could help move some furniture. When we arrived we walked in the house and were greeted by the puppy. I said to MIL, who is a bit of a dog collector, "did you get a new dog!?!" Just as DS scooped him up. She said "yes" and I said to DS "Go show dad (outside) what grandma did!" And we all moved outside where I asked, "what's his name?" And she answered, "400". This photo is DS realizing the dog was for him after hearing that answer. I also love DD15 reaction to her brother's joy. His friend said, "are you going to replace me with a dog?" Lol! I think he was sorta serious. Haha. ETA: the Mohawk is not his normal haircut. The hotel we were at did free haircuts so we let him get one for Fun fornthe weekend, which was hilarious cause he is a total preppy dresser so we called him a preppy punk all weekend. Attachments:

Great story and I love the photo! I have a Rat Russell Terror mix myself; he is full of boundless energy even at the age of nine. Your story reminds me of something similar that happened in my family when my sister played Bobby Sox back in the day (does that still exist? I have no clue.) Someone brought a box of puppies to one of her games and my sister asked our dad if she could have one. Having little faith in her abilities, he said she could have one if she hit a home run. "Homer" came home with her that night

That is such a great photo and memory to go along with it. I wish that we took photos when we picked up our puppy, the kids had no idea where we were going so it was a nice surprise when 9 puppies came bounding in to choose from.

Such a great story. I love picture too. Gotta keep us updated on the puppy training. I have heard they are full of energy and slightly headstrong. Our second dog was a bit like that but now is 100% fun.

Definitely scrapbook worthy! We have a JRT that is 14 now, and I'll tell you from experience that the more time your family spends training him and working with him early on, the better off you'll be. They are busy little dogs and they NEED to have a job to do or they can be crazy and destructive trying to work off all of their energy. They also need to be around people a LOT and they don't like being left alone. Buy a crate and crate train him, you won't regret it. Mine has climbed chain link fences, gotten up on the kitchen table by jumping up on a chair and other silliness. It's certainly been an experience. You will be surprised by his intelligence! Have fun and good luck!

Back then we weren't prepared for the energy of a JRT But we have spent quite a bit of time researching this time. We also have an 11 year old Lhaso Apso. Two totally different temperaments! He spends his days ignoring the puppy, who begs him to play. I can't swear to it but I think he rolled his eyes at him, lol. I think he thinks if he ignores him he'll go away

After teaching him basic obedience (sit, down, stay, etc.) I taught ours a ton of tricks. He learned how to fall over and play dead, roll over, beg (got REALLY good at that one, LOL!), dance around in circles on his back legs, speak, cover himself with a blanket and close our back door among other things. He taught himself how to get up on our kitchen chairs to get at something on the table, how to climb the chain link fence to get into the neighbor's yard to play with their border collie and how to get into almost every wastebasket in the house (that is, until we got smart and started using the equivalent of a Diaper Genie as a wastebasket). By nature they are hunting dogs and they love to chase, and ours kept busy keeping all the wildlife out of our yard in the city. The wild squirrels, rabbits, voles, even birds didn't have a chance with him around. You can teach them to pick stuff up and put it away (toys, socks, etc.), fetch things for you and the like. If you do a search on YouTube for Jack Russells and tricks, you'll find a ton of amusing things they can be taught. JRT's are great dogs to teach agility to and I wish I would have discovered that when ours was young because he would have loved that. The busier you keep them, the happier they will be. At least that has been our experience!
