DS appeared last night asking me to check his head. His girlfriend had just called him to say she has head lice. Ugh. I was really surprised that I actually still had a nit comb - and that I could find it. Thankfully DS had a haircut last Saturday so his hair is mostly pretty short. I thought by the time he was this age (17) I would no longer have to carry out such an activity! Thankfully there are no signs of nits - yet. DD20 is freaking out as her hair is very thick and curly and trying to get a nit comb through it will be hell. Oh happy days!

My DD19 got lice for the first time a few months ago. It was our family's first experience. Fortunately didn't spread to anyone else in the family. I thought we'd missed that fun, too.

Just reading that made my head itchy. This winter has been terrible! Poor DD got lice 3 times, and I'm so over it! Thankfully, she won't get it in the summer since her little friend is abroad until school starts. Why some parents don't take lice seriously and let their kids infect others, is beyond me.

We had a case of lice last fall. We had a company come to the house and comb me and my DD. I had spent 5 hours working on my DD's hair and she still had lice a few days later. When I realized I had it too, I called in the professionals. They used olive oil. Slather the whole head with olive oil, be sure it's on the scalp and all the hair, then use the nit comb to pull any nits/bugs. Use a paper towel to wipe the comb with each pass. After combing the whole head, put more olive oil on if needed (the whole scalp and hair needs to be oiled, cannot be dry) and sleep that way. I braided my DD's hair and she slept on a towel. In the morning, use the nit comb, wiping it off on a paper towel with each pass, then use Dawn to wash hair, might need to do it twice, then regular shampoo/conditioner. Do this for 7 days. The next 7 days, do it every other day. Then the third week, every third day.
I slept in a shower cap each night. We only did the week treatment, then a few more times after that, and NOTHING anymore. We did try the OTC Rid treatment, didn't work.
She's been exposed once since then and I did olive oil on her for a few days and we didn't have any problems.

Gosh! I am itching now! We had a horrible time with it one winter when the boys were in elementary school. They kept getting re-infected by a family of kids who lived with their grandparents and the grandparents were only treating the head and not the entire house. I thought I was going to have a nervous breakdown because I was working full time and my dh was traveling a lot for his job. I had to deal with it several times all by myself. It was horrible!

Ewww. The stuff of my nightmares. I never want to relieve that again.
Funny side story though - they just opened a new facility in our town called Lice Lifters. It's like an ER room for lice. They take appointments and also emergencies (although I can't imagine a time that I wouldn't consider it an emergency). They do the combouts and provide treatment. It's called Lice Lifters and the people who work there are Lifticians.

We have a similar company not far from me. I can't stand the thought of lice, so I would totally call them or go there if one of my kids came home with lice. I know lice are not really a medical issue and I think the American Academy of Pediatrics now says that lice is no reason to keep a kid from going to school. Fortunately, we haven't had to deal with this and I hope our good luck continues!
