Or anyone who knows for that matter. I'm just trying to figure out if it's best for me to use Micaela's student discount or to go to someplace like QVC.
TIA

Not a college mama, but a mac user here. I know apple does back to school specials in August, or closer to back to school time.

Apple products remain pretty consistent in pricing. The student discount is good. My only other suggestion is Postal Service has a moving kit that you can download online or pick up at the post office it sometimes has a 15-25 percent off coupon for Target. I was able to use it to buy an IPad last year.

We went to the apple store and used her university/student discount. We also purchased apple care (their warranty service). They fixed her computer twice (both times they had to replace the hard drive so she lost everything that was not backed up). The third time she had a problem they gave her a brand new computer and the warranty for it starts all over again at no extra cost to us. Apple care was well worth the money in our situation.

My university sells Mac's in their bookstore for a big discount and no tax to students.
They didn't have the Mac I wanted so I was able to to purchse it directly through Apple via my university verfication. I wengt and picked it up at Apple and it was fast and easy.
Last thing but less lucrative, Best Buy gives $50 off Mac's to college students. You sign up on their site with your edu email and they email it to you. I might still have an unused one. It was a better deal through my university direct to Apple for me.

No no no, don't buy a laptop with only 4 GB of RAM. Unless her school offers discounts for buying through them, buy it directly from Apple with the education discount and consider waiting for the back to school promo later in the summer.

Ok, thanks. My laptop has an 8 so I was thinking the same thing but she's not a gamer or anything, so I thought she might be ok with it. You're probably right though.

Beware - the QVC laptop only has 128GB store space on the flash drive. That is not a lot after putting all your iTunes song on it. Spring for the 8MB RAM and at least the 256GB SSD drive. That configuration will take her through 4-years of college.

Apple gives a student discount--I think it's $100. If you get a laptop with current standards, it should last her 4 years. I wouldn't buy an out of date model just to get a cheaper price.

You can also check at the Apple store to see if you qualify for some other discount. I get a 10% discount as an employee of a large company. All I needed to do was show them my business card, the person looked it up and I was eligible. I think it is like the cell phone companies offer discounts to the employees of many companies.

I bought the mid sized desk top and am pretty sure we saved $200 through the military discount. But the computer was almost $2,000. I'm guessing you save 10%. Apple Site

16MB? I don't know anyone who has 16MB on a laptop, desktop...sure. Maybe my nephew but he's a hardcore gamer.

Some majors require specific computers with specific requirements. And some colleges have discounts if you buy directly through the college, as well as IT support for those computers purchased through the school. Be sure to look into this before you buy. I'd pay extra to have on site IT support.

I didn't know about school tech support though.

I have 16 GB of RAM in my MBP and wouldn't go with less. I'm not a gamer, but I do a lot of photo editing and a fair bit of video editing.
IMO, it's always better to go with more RAM because things just keep requiring more and more to keep strong performance.

When my son entered college in 2008, the best deal we could find on a MacBook (and warranty) was through his university. His dad is a software engineer and loves researching these types of things....

We went right to the Apple store with DD's letter of acceptance, and they gave her the discount on the spot.
In my experience (limited as it is) many Apple retailers cannot give much of a discount as Apple limits the pricing on their products.

We bought DD's at the Apple store with the student discount. When she got to school she found she could have saved another $200+ if she'd bought it through the school so definitely check.
Also, absolutely check with the department at the school. Some schools are Mac-centric and some are PC-centric and some both. DD is an engineering major and her school is PC-centric so all the engineering software they use runs on PC's. She uses Parallels on her MBP to run the PC software and the school does support that option through their IT dept.
Your dd is doing marketing. If she does any graphic design/advertisment classes, they may prefer Macs. Definitely worth asking about.
Get the AppleCare warranty and absolutely set up BackBlaze. Best $50 you will spend all year and it's quick and easy if you set it up before you start using the computer. It will back up from the get go.

Get the most memory and RAM you can afford. The computer will last your daughter for years.
Do not just think of her needs now think of the future in music and photos too. Yes, get Apple Care. She can call Apple and get assistance easily. Tell her if she has any issues to call Apple. They track the issue and yes if necessary will replace the computer.
Go to the Apple Store. An associate will help you and your daughter figure out what is best for her. If they don't have the computer in stock they will assist you in ordering it. It's easy to track online. Oh, and you'll have to be home to sign for it.

If you get your Mac at the Apple store, you get the Apple Care on a discount as well as the Mac...you just have to have your proof of college enrollment. Also, be sure that you keep track of all receipts because you can use them on your taxes as education costs.

Our Apple store experience was awesome. Ben talked to the associate that was helping us. They discussed the options and what he intended to do with the Mac and they decided on which Mac. We did decide to get it fully loaded as we know that this will be his laptop for the next 4-6 years. My husband has had a Mac in the time frame that I have purchased 3 cheap ass laptops. I finally bit the bullet and bought myself a Macbook Air. We are now a family of three with each of us having our own Mac. And we love it!

Well, I'd say it's a bit different on the Macbooks. We have 2 Macbook Air's that we use heavily for work - a 4mg from 2013 and an 8gb from a couple of months ago - and we multi-task their little RAM off! Frankly, I can't tell the difference in performance between them at all until I get up to something like Adobe Illustrator (little memory hog!!). choppedliver - I went to look at the QVC macbook specs, but it is already sold out.

Well, I posted and then read more of the posts. Marketing major, huh? As in graphic design? Then, more memory definitely; as high as you can/are willing to afford. Marketing theory, papers, general word processing - then you're fine with regular Air's. IMO, of course, before the flaming begins.

I have a MacBook Pro w/ 16 GB of RAM and an SSD, my husband has one with 8 GB and an SSD. Processors are virtually identical. I hate using Photoshop or even Lightroom on his, because it's so much slower than mine. I don't notice a speed difference in much of anything else, but there's a noticeable difference there.
