So at work we typically have parties for births, showers, whatever.. any excuse to have a party. My friend and husband are adopting 2 sisters and in the process of getting it done. (They are family members down the line, so technically they are related somehow).. She is SO excited to get the girls!! They were not able to have kids. ANYWAYS, so we typically do parties at work for births/showers. We will collect donations from everyone (which is usually in the $200 range). We want to be sure that they are here (home) before we jump the gun. I know for the final adoption it could be months and months out, we don't want to wait till then. We just want to be sure they are for sure here and will start school in the fall.
So do you think maybe a couple of outfits per girl and a toy and the rest on a gift card for mom/dad to buy what they need? Or all on a gift card? I could probably do two outfits/toys for $100 and the rest on a gift card to Target or maybe even a clothing store OR a furniture store (I know they are buying all new furniture for them, BUT they might be already done getting it all)...
Any thoughts?

Gift cards attached to age appropriate toys. That way they can get what they need.

I like the idea of the gift card with a toy. Clothing can be hard to figure out sizing unless you can ask the parents.

How old are the girls?
You say they are sort of family, does that mean they will come with belongings and toys and whatever.
I find it hard to buy for children, they have such set ideas about things. I know my grandchildren would only wear "dorky" clothes if they came from my mother (their great grandmother) because she was too old to know better. And they didn't want to hurt her feelings.

Gift cards attached to age appropriate toys. That way they can get what they need. When I adopted my boys they were 3 and 7. My favorite gifts were exactly this. The boys got something and then I got something that helped with what I needed for them. A few gifts were family games which was fun too. I got a ton of picture frames....which I never used half of them. I also got a good handful of photo albums...again didn't use them. I still have in my wallet Baskin Robbins gift certs. They were in a drawer and were lost for years. I just found them when we moved in last and we still haven't used them. The boys adoption was 12 years ago!!

The girls are 3 and 6. I already heard the six year old likes to color (mine is six as well... so I am going to base that on her likes as well...) and both love pink.
I will skip the clothes and go for a game for the older one and maybe a doll for the younger one and then the rest in a gift card for mom/dad.
You know I don't know if they are bringing much with them or not. They are in foster care now and not sure if what they have stays at the home or goes with them. I could always ask.

Leaving foster care, they will most likely arrive with very little. Many foster homes keep the toys, etc. in their homes for the next child they will foster. Obviously depends upon the particular situation, but that's the norm.

As an adoptive parent, I think the gift cards with an age appropriate "welcome home" toy is a fabulous idea.

We adopted two boys and they had very little when they came to us so they were in need of just about everything. Parents will also want to record a lot of the "first" for the new family so a scrapbook, or gift card for getting photos printed would probably be appreciated. Since it is summer, they will, most likely, want to take the children to some local attractions, so maybe gift cards for the zoo, water park, aquarium, etc. If they are coming from foster care, they will need some toys.

I know it may be silly, but what about a dollhouse welcoming them to their forever home? They could both share it and they could each get a little calico critter family to play with or something along those lines? I would also get a "making box" which is a Rubbermaid box filled with crayons, paper, glue sticks, pipe cleaners, wiggly eyes, etc. with back to school sales I bet you could get some good deals, and then add the gift cards with that.
I think it is so sweet that you are making sure they are welcomed with love!

For one of the gifts, how about a family photo portrait sitting? I'm very excited for your friends. How awesome that they are going to be building their family.
