He lost me at fornicators, I could not read any more. I loathe that word. Awww! Come on, fornicate is a great word. Always makes me think of Stockard Channing's character in the movie "Where the heart is". Movie Trailer LinkThat made me giggle, raindancer!

I suspect that she means by the church. There are a good number of churches that seem to pick and choose the sins to be vocal about. Ohhhhh. OK. Excuse me. I will agree I am not aware of any church preachings against overeating. I've never heard anything against smoking from the pulpit either though. I have absolutely heard preachers speak about this very thing...and I grew up Southern Baptist. "We" didn't dance, drink, or fornicate! In all seriousness, though, I have heard preachers speak against having "pet" sins that you overlook or excuse because they happen to be the ones that you struggle with.

besides, so many put their 'bedroom activity' out there in plain sight of the public.

I had the biggest crush on that whack-ado in the 80's. I don't put an adulterer and a fornicator (good lord what an atrocious word) in the same realm.

Is this a way of saying 'Let the one without sin cast the first stone'? Because although I don't believe in religion, I DO believe n ithat quote. People are way too occupied with what everyone else is doing. I don't know much about what Kirk has been up to since his TV days, but from the article it looks like he is very involved with his church. I am sure coming out and saying this will be hard for a lot of people in his church to agree with. I did notice he refused to comment on gay marriage, saying it's not a priority. And he is right! It shouldn't be a priority. He probably doesn't agree with gay marriage, but has decided to focus his energy elsewhere. I hope more churchleaders follow his lead and focus on what everyone can do for themselves, and not talk hatefully about what someone else is doing.that's interesting that you believe in that quote - since it speaks of sin.
I don't think it'll cause him problems in his church. His ministry is for Christian marriages.
if ministers didn't talk about what non Christians call 'hateful', they wouldn't be doing what they are supposed to do. The problem lies with all those 'ministers' who say they are Christian, deny what God says and deceive those sitting in front of them every week.

That's pretty much what my pastor said Wednesday night....that adultery and divorce were far greater marriage issues for Christians than same sex marriage.

I know it. Those heterosexuals walking around holding hands with their spouses all day long. Who wants to see that at Costco? Really now, isn't that private? I don't want to know what they do in their bedrooms. They just have to throw it in everybody's face all the time. Keep that private, man. Won't somebody think of the children?

I agree with him. The fornicator and adulterers are a bigger issue in christian, or any, marriage than whether or not Joe and Steve want to get married. I think this true. I totally agree.

Hmmmm. It could be that when I said I was not aware of church preachings....others took those words to mean not aware of doctrine...what I was referring to was an actual sermon from the pulpit. And to the best of my knowledge overeating or smoking have never had an entire sermon dedicated to them at a church I was attending. Never a focus on divorce, homosexuality, adultery, or much emphasis on any of the things that apparently other churches are spending time on. Focus is instead on building relationships. Our sermons focus on the positive too. My pastor is toward the end of a sermon series on the Ten Commandments that has been really good, and I wondered what he was going to do with the adultery one. He did talk a little bit about adultery as a betrayal of trust and how damaging it is to the whole family, but the bulk of his message was on how to strengthen your marriage....the way husbands should be treating their wives and vice versa, including that a physical relationship was an important part of a healthy marriage. He wasn't overly explicit, but he did make the point. He got lots of positive comments on that sermon....people said it was so much more inspiring to hear what we should be doing instead of just what we shouldn't.

The only smoking I heard about in church was about those who were going to burn Hell.

I quit going to church at 15 because my youth leader's daughter saw me smoking in the mall and I didn't want a lecture, so I am guessing something must have been said about smoking at some time.

I suppose I believe in the broader meaning of 'sin'. It has nothing to do with religion, but of morals, common decency, treating other humans with respect, and following the law. I also think that the Ten Commandments are not bad rules to live by. Except the one about only having God as the one true God. But the rest of them.... they are not bad guidelines to follow in your life. No of course you shouldn't kill, lie, steal, cheat and so on. Just because it's in the Bible, doesn't make it wrong

I think it interesting that Christians ignore that the Bible says gluttony is a sin. Smokers are shunned for their health risks but not weight related diseases. We need to control our bodies against lust, harsh words and appetite.

I think it interesting that Christians ignore that the Bible says gluttony is a sin. Smokers are shunned for their health risks but not weight related diseases. We need to control our bodies against lust, harsh words and appetite. Actually, not all Christians do. There are groups of women in churches across the country in groups called "First Place for Health". These groups are designed to help you put God first in your body, mind, and spirit. I am a member of the group at my church, which started about 3 months ago. There are about 20 members in the group at my church, and all of us are steadily losing weight. This group has been around for years, but I'd never heard of it before. Because of having the support of others who are going through the same struggle, I am having more success with losing weight and sticking with it than I have in years. About the topic of the thread: I agree with Kirk on this.
