Do you use patterned paper often? I have been trying to use more of mine. I figure I bought it might as well use it. I have a couple of sketch books from Scrapbook generation they really help and some of Shimelle's classes have been great. What do you find that helps you actually use all this pretty paper?

I exclusively use patterned paper. And what helped me with that is something you mentioned- Shimmelle. I watched lots of her videos. I just bit the bullet and decided to choose only patterned paper like her. She has great advice on finding and using types of patterns that work well together. Place many of your favorites in front of you and just start cutting and layering! You'll quickly see what is jarring to the eye, and what just seems to jive well. Keep practicing and you'll be an expert.

I have to make myself use card stock. I love patterned paper. Just looking at another layout starts me and then I just start cutting and trying colors in different areas. I use 3-7 different patterns per layout.

I pretty much only use patterned paper. If a use a more solid background it is usually distressed paper. I don't have any problem using patterned paper because it is the first thing I go for.
One thing I do alot of is make a strip from the patterned paper and put it along the bottom or along the side. Some papers are made like this with a pattern on the side or at the bottom. I just do that with my various patterned papers.

Patterned paper is almost all I ever use: very little cardstock and very little solids. I love to mix and match patterned papers and the resource that really helped me was Ali Edwards' book "Designer's Eye for Scrapbooking with Patterned Paper". She showed how easy it was to use up to five different patterned papers together on a single LO. Ali mixes PP by comparing pattern size, pattern type, values of colors, etc. I don't know if that book is still in print but it's a good one!

I use like 5 pieces of cardstock a year. That makes my patterned paper quotient around 98%.
I love mixing. There's an older publication called Playing With Paper by Angelia Wiggington that helped me grasp the concept.

I use patterned paper on every single layout.
I have no problem cutting down a 12x12 to use as the background for a 8.5x11" layout.
I layer the heck out of my layouts. The trick is to use (at least) three color coordinating papers. Grab a floral (or you can substitute triangles, gears, stars, etc), a stripe, and a polkadot.
I use pp as a border, using a one inch strip at the bottom and one inch at the top.

I Only use solid for mats. Photos are what I want to jump out from my page so I use large photos or multiple photos so very little of the paper is seen.

I love patterned paper and use very little card stock except white. Thanks for the tip about Shimelle videos - always looking for tips on how to mix patterns

I started scrapping years ago exclusively with cardstock and I have to make myself use patterned paper. Very seldom do I do a page without a cardstock background. I'm just kind of boring that way.

I love patterned paper, but these days I always have a layout in mind when I purchase.
Happy scrapping, jamh

I like the older Close To My Heart idea books to help use up my pattern paper.

I have always used patterned paper. I used to always use cardstock as a background paper, but for the past year or so I've started using neutral or more subtle patterned paper instead and I really like it. Once in a while I like a very clean and simple layout on kraft or white cardstock, but I love my paper. I always find inspiration on Pinterest.

I, too, use a cardstock base for every layout. Rarely do I cover it with patterned paper.

I love PP, but I love my Bazzill cardstock too. So I use both, with my photos dictating the mix and match of PP vs cardstock. I enjoy the search and design process I can also recommend Ali's Designer's Eye books for inspiration.

I use both cardstock and patterned paper. But I always use quite a bit of PP on my projects. Lots of great suggestions here on how to help you get more comfy with it!
Also make sure you check out the "b" sides (other side of the paper, usually it's a bit more muted or better for a background). A lot of times I use b sides in place of cardstock for a background. Especially ombré look papers right now. Or gently distressed or watercolor looking patterns. That's a good way to get your feet wet using them as your bases if you usually grab cardstock.

I use PP on almost every layout, but I have a hard time using a lot of different patterns mixed together. I typically use several photos on two page layouts and to me they tend to get lost in all that busy-ness of pattern even if they're matted with solid colored cardstock. So for that reason I almost always use a solid cardstock base for pretty much every layout and just use the PP as an accent on borders, mats, etc. When I do use multiple patterns, I have to use solid cardstock to act as a buffer between the patterns. I think it works better for layouts with only 1-2 larger photos, but that's just me. Maybe I'll change my ways once I really get organized and have more time to actually scrapbook again. I just bought three more SG sketch books so maybe that will help me try some new things.

I use a mix of pp and cardstock for my backgrounds. I generally prefer muted patterns for backgrounds but have gotten a lot braver with my background choices by watching Shimelle's and Nic Mackin's videos.

I use a mix of cs and pp on my layouts as well. I totally forgot about Ali's Designer's Eye book. I loved it and it is what started me using more patterns. I really like Shimmelle's video's too. (I just don't like to write on my busy pattern paper, just tried it again last month, still not for me.)

They will definitely help you to use more pp. I find it helps to use a collection of papers when working with one of their sketches instead of trying to pull together enough patterns that match well enough. Their sketches use like 5 and 6 papers on one layout. A collection just makes it easier. Have fun playing with your new books.

I use a lot of patterned paper. As long as I mat my photos, they hold their own against the patterned papers.

I love patterned paper! Sometimes I cut an inch off two sides and mat the 11x11 with solid cardstock.
