One of DH's friends was critically injured yesterday in a fireworks incident and I am just having a hard time with this I guess. Life just seems so unfair and cruel sometimes.
He and his 4yo son were driving home from their 4th of July family campout on Sunday morning and he had a bunch of leftover fireworks in his car. Really big fireworks, like the big single shot artillery shells. His brother thinks static ignited the fireworks in the car and caused them to explode. The explosion was so great that it ripped the top of the car off. Both he and his son were critically injured and life flighted out. He has hearing loss, possible vision loss, significant burns to the right side of his body and shrapnel wounds. He went into surgery today. His son has significant burns over 40% of his body and one of his legs was basically melted away. He went into emergency surgery yesterday to try and save his leg.
Despite his own injuries he was able to pull the car over and not hit anyone else, remove his son from his car seat and get him out of the car to try and help him.
He was 2 miles from his house when this happened. Just an ordinary day after a weekend with family. And now, tragedy. I just can't wrap my head around it.

I am very, very against individuals being able to purchase and ignite fireworks.
I'm glad that it's illegal here.

I'm so sorry. I have seen several stories of tragedy via fireworks in the past few days. My heart feels sad with each one I read.

That is horrible. I never knew that could happen. I will pray for them. So tragic.
Would storing them in the trunk have helped at all in this situation? I am just looking for a take away. Something I can warn others of.

How horrible! I am so sorry!
The recovery will not be easy.
It's the time of year. Worst days to be working in an ER.. too many fireworks injuries. I admit I find it so unnecessary and I am glad it is illegal to sell fireworks in this state.

So sorry! I hope your friend does recover better than they expect. I too only think professionals should be doing fireworks, but I know I don't get to tell others what to do and that is fine. I just don't want anyone getting hurt!

Horrible, horrible, horrible. I wish personal fireworks would be banned nationally, leaving only the professional shows to be legal.

How awful, I'm sorry. Not to detract from your story but I also heard of a 4th July fireworks celebration tragedy when a guy set of a firework that was attached to his HEAD!

Something I can warn others of. I have no idea. His brother said that they are speculating that the sub (speaker thingy) caused some static which then ignited at least one of the artillery shells which then set off all of them. But at this point they have not released an official answer. He was driving a car, so there was a trunk and you would think that would have maybe contained the explosion a little bit..

That is so very horrible and I can't wrap my hear around it either.
Fireworks are illegal here too, but that sure doesn't keep people from shooting them. I also hate how the city says they are illegal, but they let vendor set up huge tents and sell them in the very town where they are illegal.
I used to love fireworks years ago, but now I would just rather leave it up to the professionals. It is just way too dangerous.

How awful, I'm sorry. Not to detract from your story but I also heard of a 4th July fireworks celebration tragedy when a guy set of a firework that was attached to his HEAD! Yes, that was in Maine. The man was obviously killed in that situation. OP, I am very sorry about your DH's friend's accident and I hope for the very best possible recovery for him & his son. While I do think that there is a lot of danger involved in setting off fireworks, I never gave any thought to the possible dangers in merely transporting them. How awful.
