Ok...I'm a firm believer in doing something creative everyday....which is why I scrap, stamp, make cards, dabble in beading/sewing/knitting....but art journals...I'm just not sure about. I kept a journal most of my life. I'm a writer. I'm guessing an art journal is similar but with images. A unique creation not meant to be shared? Am I on the right track? If I am, why is it that so many art journals look the same? Why aren't there more art journals that are simple/symmetrical/clean designed etc? Is my scrapbook not an art journal?
I just would love to hear from anyone that does art journal and those who don't.

I don't, but I want to. There are some really beautiful projects out there. I took an online class a few years on making a journal out of a composition notebook cover, but filling it with Bristol cardstock to use with markers and other art media. So I made the journal, now I need to fill it! It's a "one of these days" project. I'm not much of a writer, but I've seen some pretty pages that tell the story with more art than words, which would work best for me.

No, I don't. I think it's because I'm intimidated by so many of the mixed media techniques. I have only very recently started playing around with watercolors and gesso and that's out of my comfort zone. I also have limited time, so I guess I feel like I could work on my PL or on my childhood album or one of several other projects that are in process, or I could do something new, but I can't do it all.

I do. And I love it. Art journaling is whatever you want to make it and do with it. Some people do a lot of writing and no or few techniques. Some do fancy writing and doodles that are so amazing. Some collage. Some actually have art work (like actually pictures they've made with whatever media). Although most often online aj-er's do share their creations. Some people use art journaling as a way to experiment with techniques. I have several journals. One just for songs that move me. One for scriptures/religious things One for a facebook group prompts. One for gratitude. One for just messing around. I'm not prolific, I do it when the mood strikes.

I tried it and it's not for me. I think you have to be somewhat creative to AJ. I'm more of a copier. Very few original ideas come out of my room.

No, I don't. I think it's because I'm intimidated by so many of the mixed media techniques. I think this is me too. The journals I see online are so beautifully messy and although I like a little splattering or texture paste I just feel like the examples I have seen are well beyond my comfort zone. And to be honest, although I love looking at the them, I don't think they're the project for me.

Here's the thing though...if it is about personal creative expression, why do you have to use mixed media techniques or supplies? Is it because some people did theirs that way and everyone started copying that style? I'm just really curious because the idea of journaling appeals to me but the look of many of the shared journals does not. I use mixed media supplies in my paper crafts already...always have...because paper crafts especially scrapbooking is essentially mixed media collage anyway...so why couldn't a scrapbook page I made in my usual style about something personal count as an art journal?

You DON'T have to use mixed media or supplies. I have seen so many ways of AJ!! I have just started this year and have only done a few pages. I am also a collector so I have been collecting supplies but that is for me. I will use them. I see them on sale or at TM and somehow they just come home with me. I have seen people using simple notebooks, markers readily available, cut outs from magazines, old book pages(really, most of have something like that around), glue sticks, ets. Yes, I agree if you are a scrapper you most likely have the basics that you would need. It is like any craft, there are some supplies that some people will use/want/need that others just don't see using in their own journals/art work. My scrapbook pages are for anyone to see. They are document the life that is happening around us. My art journal is basically mine. Like our diaries when we were 13. I find sayings I like and use those as inspirational quotes on pages. If I am in a bad mood while I am doing something, I notice I use darker colors/motifs. If things are going good and sparkly, then those colors are reflected. Do I have original pages? Yep! Do I get inspiration from seeing someone else's page and think "I want to try doing that" and "journal lift"? You bet! Wow, I think this may be the longest post I have written on here to date. All to say, you do what you are comfortable with. With what you have.

I art journal. More like the Sumerset Art Journaling magazine. I have been doing this for 10 or 11 years, long before the scrapbook world picked it up. You can use whatever supplies you like. There are no rules. None. Use what you have or want and have fun. I use 120 lb or heavier watercolor paper, different types of paint, markers, stickles glitter glue, stamps, cut images and letters from magazines, or draw/paint my own stuff. I was posting pages in the gallery on the old board and very few people understood what it was. Mostly quotes or random thoughts, often there are no photos, and use little, if any, scrapbook supplies. http://

i haven't delved into researching them, so I haven't tried them.
Sometimes I feel like my time can only stretch so far, and it's at its max capacity with the scrapping I do now.

I have a friend who does art journaling. Hers seems to be more of an artistic exercise than a journal for writing in. She uses it to try different techniques.
I prefer to simply scrap. Once in awhile I try a new technique, but I don't want to spend the time on an art journal. Nothing wrong with it, just not something that peaks my interest.

I dove in several years ago and LOVE it. LOVE all mixed media now. I actually prefer it over scrapping now. I even use mixed media on my scrapbook pages now. Truly I found a passion that I didn't know existed until I dove in!

I love to do these small ATCs too. I call them my Scripture Art Cards. Here are some I made yesterday.

I don't do it. I tend to think of art journaling as though it's for people who are able to express themselves through art. I have never really been able to do that. My daughter draws her feelings in her art and I love that she has that coping skill. I can't draw a stick figure so it doesn't work for me. Some art journals I've seen seem to be for expressing feelings and some seem not to be connected to feelings. They're just art. I've been thinking about trying watercolors so maybe I might give that a try someday.
