We are driving to the Gulf Shores in a few weeks. We want to split the drive up by staying in Baton Rouge one night. We will have a little bit of time to explore and want to stay close to what the fun or touristy places are. We are traveling with my two boys ages 13 and 10, so no nightlife needed.

I am not a Baton Rouge Refupea but my dad lives there so I have been going to Baton Rouge most of my life. I don't really do much in the way of touristy things there though because I mostly visit family and friends. Last time I was there when I needed a hotel, I stayed in the Drury Inn on Essen Park. It is right off of I-10 and also very close to I-12.......in other words, it is close to the I-10/I-12 split. It is convenient to get to most places but I don't know what you have planned. You should definitely go check out Mike the Tiger on LSU campus. Mike had a very nice, new habitat built a few years ago. You might want to do some research on when Mike is most active to check him out. I love to eat at Sammy's on Highland. It is close to the Drury. I love to go to Sammy's for Crawfish. Not sure when you will be there and if Crawfish will be in season or not. Take the kids to Coffee Call on College Dr. for Beignets.

Thanks! I will definitely check those out. I was thinking we would want to stay off of I-10 or I-12 since we will taking it over to Gulf Shores.

And, I said take the kids to Coffee Call for Beignets.........I actually take myself for Beignets. LOL If I can't get to Cafe du Monde in New Orleans, then Coffee Call will work.
Drury Inn has free breakfast in the morning as well as some freebie foods in the evening along with drinks. If I remember right, each adult was given 2 drink tickets for adult beverages at the evening break. I found it nice and reasonably priced.........not super cheap but not too expensive either.
