I have been scrapbooking since 1998 or so. My MIL has always been a bit "why do you waste your time doing that," and when I started having kids, said, "well, now you're not going to have any time to scrapbook."
Don't we have kids so that we can scrapbook them? I mean, really.
Anyhow, I always told her that I did it in part because I found it an enjoyable hobby, and in part so that my albums would stay in good shape over the years, as I had seen what happened with magnetic album. Guess what? Her stack of albums is falling apart and yellow, and she has asked me what she should do with the photos. (That was the I-am-smug part, thank you for bearing with me). They are an assortment of 1970s squares, smaller 3*5 type 1980s prints, and 4*6 prints. She has most of the newer 4*6 prints in two-up albums.
What advice would you give her about rehoming her photos? She is not interested in scrapbooking them herself, and, while I indeed have time to work on my own albums, I do not have the time to do albums for her (and she is 3000 miles away anyway), so I will be giving her instructions or telling her what to buy. Simpler is better, and she has serious neurological limitations, so nothing that is going to involve using tools.

I would advise her to get some 2 up albums to put them in. She probably won't find any with pockets to fit the smaller size but they will be safe.

And if she wants, she can attach the smaller square photos to pre cut 4x6 card stock using an acid free adhesive and slide into the 2-up album. That would give her a place to write notes about photos too. While she is doing this, encourage her to note who is in the photos (and not just "grandma", but the actual name).

I told her that she should probably just buy a bunch of 2-up albums, but she wasn't wild about that for whatever reason.

Point her in the direction of an online retailer that sells 2 up albums, and tell her to put the photos from one magnetic album at a time into the new 2 up album (so the photos don't get all mixed up).

I think pocket pages are the way to go. I did that with my square photos until I was ready to scrap them.
The other thing she can do is get 8.5x11 document protectors and a huge cardstock pack. Put a dab of adhesive or adhesive square on the back of each photo just to hold it and place them on the cardstock. Then she can write things around the photo.
Sounds like she may want them sort of scrapbooked and this would fill the bill, be cheap and save the photos.

Wow I'm out of the loop because I had to google a 2 up album! Anyway, I agree that pocket albums would be the way to go!

She may not want to, but it's really the only logical option. I made my sisters PL albums for Christmas, using copies of photos from our childhood and it was a nightmare - the older photos don't fill the pockets, so you either have to adhere them to something (and boy do I wish I had thought of the precut 4x6 mats instead of cutting my own . . . ) or they just fly around. Just out of curiosity, what is her issue w/the 2-ups?
