I have a nice collection of stamps and am only now just starting to use them on my layouts. I have recently bought 2 sets of matching stamps and dies and need some advice on how to use them. Do you stamp and colour first then use the die? I have a Cuttlebug, but I've only ever really used it for embossing so I'm not sure how to match up the die and stamped image without it moving. Is it better to leave images on bigger pieces of paper? I was thinking of stamping, then cutting THEN colouring. I don't want to waste time and effort colouring if I muck up the die placement. I am also planning to stamp on Stampin Up white cardstock that comes in the A4 pack. I think I once read it is designed for stamping??? Hope this makes sense! I would appreciate any advice whatsoever. Clearly, I am quite clueless. Corinne

Corinne- Even if they are not Heartfelt Creations dies and stamps I would still go check out their video tutorial on how to do this. Tutorial on stamps with dies
They also make great stuff!

Thank you so much! That was a great video, I never even thought of taping it down. And she used a Cuttlebug too I have never heard of that company before, definitely will go and look them up. Corinne

Whether I stamp and then cut or cut first depends a lot on the die. If it's like a spellbinders or thinlet die and I can clearly see what I'm doing then I would probably stamp first then cut. But if it's a solid die I find it a lot easier to cut first.

The dies are very thin with a sharp edge. I guess I will try a bit of trial and error to see what works best for me. The sushi one has very small pieces so that will probably be a bit tricky, wish me luck! Corinne

Good question! I prefer to stamp, color, then cut out. I guess I've seen a lot of YouTube videos done in this order. Of course, all the dies are outlines only, not solid.
I recently got a Cameo and I'm experimenting with scanning and creating either just cut files or print and cut files. With the cut-only files there isn't much choice, it's cut, then stamp, then color. I am trying to avoid buying a die set for every set of stamps I like. The jury is still out on my experiments. It is harder to line up the stamp on a cut shape than it looks. I often get more white border on one side, and I thought I had it down spot on.
I saw a tip on a Lawn Fawn video: after stamping and cutting, use some temporary tape runner to secure the shape down to a scrap piece of card stock so you have something to hold down while you are coloring. Why didn't I think of that?

I stamp then colour then cut. But I only when using label type dies. I do not use dies that cut specific stampings, I don't like the negative space they leave around the image. Those stampings I fussy cut.

I stamp, cut and then color. If I am going to mess it up, I'd rather do it before I color. I do use pits it's to hold the die in place.

Didn't mention that I usually stamp, cut, then color or ink. I use low tack tape to hold the die in place over the stamped image.

LOVE HeartFelt and Emma Lou & Gang <3
When I am not lazy, I make a template like Emma Lou - lol!! I stamp, cut/emboss and color...I too use low tack/repo tape from 3M to washi tape.

I stamp, color and then cut. I like to "try" different dies on top of the image to see which goes well with the dimensions of the image, how much "white" space it will leave and also how big it will be compared to the overall size of my card. I often wind up using a different die than I had originally planned after going through this process. Once I decide on the die I want, I just tape it with the cutting side against the colored image using painters tape and cut it out.

It has been awhile but I think I was the opposite of everyone here and cut first, then stamped. I will have to try the both approaches & see which works the best for me.

I cut, stamp, and then color, but that's because I use a Silhouette, not a manual die-cutter.

I stamp, color then cut. If you are using thin metal dies, you can buy a magnetic mat that holds the die in place on the paper. I don't know if it fits in a Cuttlebug. I have a BigShot.
I also use a little washi tape to hold the die in place over the stamped image, 'cause I know I will never use up all my washi on cards and LO's this century!
If it is the regular thick sizzix type die, I would cut then stamp. This is where a stamp-a-ma-gig works great!

I typically stamp first and then cut. I use washi tape to hold it in place. I also have silhouette cut files for some of my stamps. It is a lot harder for me to line up when I cut first but it can be done.

My dies finally arrived today so this weekend I will be trying your suggestions. A few of you have mentioned Silhouette files that match your stamps?? I have a Cameo. Can you explain how you do this? Do you need to have the designer software? So far I have not upgraded nor used any files other than those bought from the silhouette store so I'm not sure how to do these things. Thanks in advance. You have always been a part of the heist. You're only mad now because you don't like your cut.

I recently made a stamp/die combo card. I stamped and colored before I ran the image through my big shot. I guess I'm the odd man out, but I wanted to keep the stability of having the whole piece of paper to work with.
