I need to lose some weight and have been doing lots of research the last several months on the various diets out there (regimented and lots of just philosophies) including clean(er) eating, the new Atkins, 17 day diet, dash diet, paleo, and ones that are whole grain with little meat and lots of veggies, just to name a few.
What diet (not necessarily to lose weight either) does your mind and body feel best on? What do feel is also easiest to maintain while feeding a family? I do already cook gluten free because of DD's celiac disease but i don't currently avoid gluten entirely myself.
Right now I have checked out from the library 17 Day Diet, Smitten Kitchen, Eat What You Love Everyday (recipes low in sugar, fat, calories), 100 Days of Real Food, and The Mayo Clinic Diet.
Basically I'd just love to start a conversation here about eating habits and works for you, your family, your body, and if weight loss comes with it that's a big bonus.

My body likes the less food diet lol! In all seriousness though, I didn't make any effort to eat less carbs or less protein or anything like that. I just cut portions WAY down and made healthy food choices rather than high sugar/junk food choices.

Yes, I count calories by weighing food. I allowed myself 1200 calories a day. Please note that this is WAY too low a number for most people! I have been studying for the bar and not working so I spend almost my entire day sitting down. I don't recommend such a low number for most people.

I follow a mostly primal/paleo framework, but I've tweaked it over time to what my body responds to best. I eat small amounts of organic dairy. I eat some rice on occasion. I don't eat anything with gluten, ever, as I have an inflammatory condition that responds badly to it (though I am not celiac). I occasionally will eat legumes, but rarely. I don't have an inflammatory reaction to them, but my digestive system is not a fan.
I started with a strict Whole30 plan and then gradually tried adding things back, keeping the things that worked and permanently eliminating the things that didn't. I didn't do this to lose weight - my rheumatologist suggested going gluten-free and this is how i decided to do it. A pleasant side benefit was losing weight.
My philosophy is basically: eat real foods that my body responds well to. When I eat satisfying, nutrient-dense foods, I am satiated much more easily than when I ate more junk food, so it's easy to not overeat.
I do not count calories or measure food.

I'm on day 4 of the 21 Day Fix, and even though I am not weighing myself until I'm done, I can say I feel good on it. It is basically all clean eating, whole foods, no processed anything, low salt, and small portions, combined with daily workouts. I have not felt hungry yet.

I have lost a significant amount of weight (130#). My body now seems to crave fish and fruit. I will take that. I have also become lactose intolerant which I am sad about. (No ice cream or chip dip) I just seem to eat a more healthier diet now. I still crave chips but instead of eating a small bag at one sitting, I spread it out over 3 days.

High protein, high veggies and fruit low sugar, dairy, and carbs.
I have found with the healthier eating I feel much better. We used to eat lots of JUNK FOOD and hardly healthy foods. Too much Hamburger and not enough Chicken and fish. My husband doesn't like fish unless it is cod and it is breaded and fried. I love fish and seafood. I don't eat sushi.

No sushi? Say it isn't so. I love sushi. I had it for dinner last night, as a matter of fact. Darn, now I am craving sushi. Off to the store for "Dynamite rolls".....

If I do eat something bad...I find that it just doesn't taste as good as I remembered. LOL! My portions are much smaller now too. I literally eat on a kids plate and measure/weigh everything. I also log my food in My Fitness Pal.

My body likes a balanced diet. I tend to eat a good amount of protein because I'm strength training and my muscles need it but I don't restrict fat or carbs.
When I was losing, I found that weighing was the best way to go. The calories listed on food labels are based on weight, not volume, even if they give the volume equivalent. My 1 tbsp of peanut butter that was supposed to be 32 grams for 200 calories actually weighed 40 grams and gave me 250 calories. The 5 crackers that were supposed to weigh 70 grams actually weighed 92 grams. And so on.

My body did well on the Fast Metabolism diet, but Stage 3 (days 3 and 4) were hard on my mind (just protein and veggies).
It really is doable, I think I need to prepare my mind before starting it by doing a few days of stage three (closest to normal eating for me), then start stage one and go from there.

I am sorry ladies I just can't get raw fish past my tongue. something about the texture. But I do like raw shrimp. Go figure.
I have been eating healthier this time since mid March. But I grew up eating healthy. WE always had a garden and I loved most all the veggies and fruit. But husband grew up where he didn't have to eat the veggies and fruit. HE was a sick boy and had to have lots of surgeries and ate alot of jello and ice cream so he likes it sweet and sugary. It was a lot of years before I could get him to eat chicken of any kind. So I am very proud of him for doing this healthy living. I know we will always have our fun nights like last night we had pizza. Ok his was pepperoni and sausage with extra cheese. Mine was Vegetarian, white sauce and NO CHEESE! It was so good. I really enjoyed it. But it was still healthier than most pizzas.
I am a recovering pepsaholic. I tell you I drank two 2 liters of Pepsi a day for 15 years. I tried to stop many times. Finally I figured out how to get off of it. That was when they started selling the MIO water flavor. I don't like the taste of water as an enjoyable flavor. I would only drink it when I had to but always drank pepsi and coffee. Well that was 5 years ago. I do have a pepsi now and then because I will crave it. They say if you crave it eat it. That way you can satisfy your craving and move on. It doesn't taste as good and I hate bottles pepsi. There is times I will crave it and buy a small bottle and husband will say by the bigger bottle it is cheaper. I say NOPE it is not cheaper because I will drink one glass and then I will see the bottle sitting there and will have to drink the whole thing. That is not cheaper because I will drink it.
I eat smaller portions and eat it off of smaller plates or out of smaller bowls. But my problem is I need to feel full and after eating until I couldn't move every time I ate when I eat smaller portions I wasn't full So that is where the advo care helps because with the supplements and vitamins I don't get hungry like I used to and I feel full after eating the smaller portions for my meals. Plus it helps to have all the healthy snacks. I swear we are always eating something.
I have our meal plans mapped out. I know every day what I am doing for dinner. I don't have to log the food count calories or any thing. I just go with the meal plan. I do weigh stuff like the almonds for snacks. and the meat for husbands lunches. but we can eat as much salad and veggies as we want.

Dori~Mama~Bear - given the choice between raw or cooked salmon, or raw or cooked oysters, I'll choose raw every time. And my 'cooked' tuna has to be uber-rare. For me it's a texture thing too.

My body loves to store carbs!! UGH.
I've been fortunate to have been raised with good eating habits, and have been thin/normal weight my entire life, until after having babies. Then I just chunk right up and it takes me a long time to lose weight.
My first big weight loss came after DD2 was born: I ate 1200 calories a day, didn't restrict anything, ate the "proper" balance of major nutrients, and exercised 5 days a week (usually running 45 min but did some really basic strengthening stuff too). It took me 9 months to lose 28 lbs and then another 6 months to lose the last 10 pounds.
Now I'm working at becoming a healthy weight again, after gaining weight during another 2 pregnancies. I've stopped eating carbs and am exercising 5-6 days a week (running/walking and HIIT) and have lost over 30 lbs in total, 16 of which came off in the month I was first fully dedicated to eating no carbs at all. I know some people don't agree with no/low carb eating, but for me, the proof is self-evident, and seeing such amazing results has kept me motivated. Plus, I FEEL GREAT!
I am not planning on eating low/no carb forever, but seeing how quickly my body stores fat in my abdomen when I eat carbs and how quickly it comes off when I stop eating them is hopefully going to stay a reminder that I need to be very careful in the future of how many carbs I'm consuming and when it might be time to cut back.

Most of my weigh gain came after husband and I got together. I was 140 and wore a size 8 when we got together. I ate healthy. I ate what I wanted when I wanted it but because I love veggies and fruit, chicken, fish, and not so much sweets It was easy for me. But then when we got together I found it was harder and harder to keep up the 2 different kinds of eating. I would have to cook 2 different meals every night for dinner. It was easier to change my eating habits than it was to change his. I still ate veggies and fruit but not like I did before us. I didn't eat as much fish and chicken. I started eating his ground beef meals he likes. There were always sweets in the house and there was always chips and other junk food.
Through out the years he would decide he wanted to eat healthier and then I would make some changes in our foods and he wouldn't like it. It never lasted.
We did this so many times it got very old. so this time when he wanted to try this advo care challenge and this new way of eating I was all for it. especially after looking at the meal plans. I was like yeah I am gonna love it.
He has done really good. Now he says he likes it when we are on track and following our meal plans.
Dalai mama I don't do salmon unless it is smoked and I don't do oysters. oysters are slimy and I can't get them past my tongue. I like tuna but it is the one fish husband can't even smell without getting sick. I like cod, mahi mahi, halibut, shark (believe it or not) just to name a few. I like to bake it with just a little olive oil and salt and pepper. My fish doesn't have to be saucy or breaded for me to like it.
Ashley I think my body stores carbs too. I just don't do as well when I eat carbs, I am sluggish and have no energy when I eat a lot of carbs. That is one of the reasons I stopped eating pasta. When we have pasta I will eat my sauce over zucchini. I don't eat that much bread either. I do how ever love potatoes. but I have changed to eating sweet potatoes. I like to slice them spray them with cooking spray (Costco has this really good canola oil spray) and season then bake them in the oven until golden.
I love raw veggies and I love cooked veggies but my favorite way to cook them is stir fry. keeping the crunchy still.

I feel best on a phase 2 atkins with a smidge of paleo tossed in. paleo is too restricted in food groups to make me happy (love my dairy!) and since I am cutting carbs (diabetic) I found that cutting both carbs and dairy made me an unhappy person. So I take some ideas from both sources.
Really there is quite a lot of overlap in a lot of programs. So once you understand the basic logic behind any diet system you can pull recipes from a wider variety of places.

I am never hungry and if I am I just eat more vegetables. It's excellent. (I made a tiny change and some days will swap out my grains for more fruit, which is slightly off the plan but still works for me.) I like this plan because I need portion control help - I grew up with giant portions and have no eye for portions so that helps me a ton.

Lean animal protein, copious amounts of raw and cooked vegetables, moderate amounts of fruit and dairy, small amounts of starchy carbs. I was a vegetarian for 5 years and I was constantly hungry and felt like shit the entire time.
ETA: I weigh/measure proteins, fruits and dairy but not vegetables. I don't like a lot of fat but when I eat it I prefer it to be dense, as in avocado and nuts, rather than things like salad dressing, which I don't often use on salad.
I keep a record of what I eat and exercise expenditure on My Fitness Pal.
Daily exercise (365 days a year) takes top priority in my life over everything else; even if I get shit done around the house, I still get outside every day. It is key to keeping in touch with my body, mind and spirit.

I eat a high fat, low carb diet. I don't count carbs though. Since I'm diabetic I eat according to my blood glucose numbers. The main carbs I do NOT eat are starchy vegetables, breads, pasta, sweets. I do eat fruit but mainly only berries and maybe 1/4 serving of a peach or apple. I eat a lot of nuts, cheeses, real butter, red meat, lean meat, salmon, lots of salads and vegetables (green beans, artichokes, zucchini, broccoli, cauliflower, carrots). I eat 3 small meals and 2 snacks daily. I'm rarely hungry and never feel deprived. I've been eating this way for a few years now and it works very well for me. My only weakness is potatoes. I will occasionally have a few fries or a small handful of popcorn. Sweets fortunately have no sway over me so cookies and cupcakes don't tempt me.

We limit anything white: sugar, flour, pasta, etc. basically low carb. We also eat small portions; especially at lunch . I never had to think about limiting food until 10 years or so ago, but my metabolism changed, and DH has always had to watch how much he eats. But we are able to maintain our weights effectively. And I feel so much better after a meal with low carbs.

My body is in disagreement about what it likes. For instance, my stomach prefers bread, potatoes, fruit, pasta, etc or else it complains with pain and nausea.
My pancreas prefers food that keeps the blood sugar low.
My kidneys prefer low sodium.
Low sodium is easy. But the other two organs (stomach and pancreas) are fighting a battle that is usually won by the stomach, but is ultimately bad for the body as a whole.

I did low-carb for a while, but it was difficult. I just didn't adjust well to the 'new' way of thinking about food I needed to do. So now I am straight up low-calorie. 1200 calories a day. I don't eat a lot of carbs, but that is mainly because carbs are high in calories. I eat a lot of raw vegetable, like carrots, red cabbage, sugar peas and broccoli for snacks. I am surprised at just how much I can eat of these and only add 50 calories to my day! Crazy-amounts of broccoli Yesterday I bought a Fitbit Charge HR, and it has really opened my eyes to how little I actually move during the day. Great motivator to walk more every day! I've never tried crazy diets like only eating cabbagesoup for 5 weeks, or anything like that. Low calorie seems to be the best for me. And definitly the easiest! I can eat ANYTHING within my daily 1200 calories, and it make sme prioritize what makes me feel fuller for longer.

My body loves the Sea Food diet. See food, eat it! LOL
Seriously, I thought about Paleo but decided to just eat clean. I am sugar, gluten and dairy free and I have been for about 2 weeks. I feel a lot better. I eat lots of veggies, fruits and lean protein.
I know it works for me if I stick with it.

The only way of losing weight I've found that worked for me consistently and satisfactorily is plant-based eating (which is basically no animal products, low sugar and oils, eating fruits, vegetables, legumes, grains, etc.), 1200 calorie diet, and daily strenuous exercise (I run several miles a day 5-6 days a week). The exercise alone helps out if overweight but stalls out in my experience around the top or slightly over the top normal weight range. If I want to be anywhere below the slightly overweight range, the above eating plan comes into play.
Forks Over Knives is a great documentary to watch.
This eating plan can get you from slightly overweight where the other diets seem to stall out to the low end of normal range on the BMI scale, maybe lower, I don't know, I've never gone that far.
Not a good diet for non-overweight kids, they lose weight too quickly, but my kids feed themselves (adolescents/teenagers) and they don't eat vegan, mainly vegetarian for them usually.
Blood work on this eating/exercise plan in my case has been exceptional after trying it out (or a derivative of it) for a couple of years. The only thing that was not in the mid normal range on every category was cholesterol, which came in below normal range (just 2 points). There were no deficiencies. I do take a vitamin B12 supplement every once in a while.

For me, the way of eating that feels best and tends to fuel my body best is one that is low on the "white" carbs--white pasta, rice, potatoes, white bread etc. and very low on sugar and processed foods.
When I lose weight consistently, I'm eating some dairy (non-fat Greek yogurt; a bit of cheese), lots of veggies, some fruit, and lean protein, with some carbs like sweet potatoes, brown rice, quinoa.
I try not to eat too many carbs other than fruits and veggies and have a small serving of the other carbs (quinoa etc.) at each meal to help keep me feeling fuller.
The minute I ingest sugar, my body goes seriously out of whack. I don't feel good at all. It's taken me a REALLY long time to figure this out---apparently I'm not all that bright!
