Hi all! I have been watching a ton of Jennifier McGuire videos and now really want to try embossing paste. However, it seems hard to come by. Is there a difference between that and modeling paste? I can get the modeling paste on Amazon easily.

I have not used either of them. When I did do things likes canvases I used, hmm, what should I call it - home improvement things from the hardware store. Silicon, drywall mud that sort of thing.
I still have lots because few of those things come in small containers. So maybe the craft products would be a better size.

modeling paste, molding paste, and embossing paste are essentially the same thing. You can do the same techniques with them. Each brand has a different consistency. There is also dimensional paint which is already colored (I have some in pink and blue).

I have Golden brand molding paste, and it's works very well, is flexible when dry. Jennifer Mcguire keeps saying that she far prefers embossing paste. We should ask her why on her blog: bet she'd do us a side by side comparison!

She says it's more like frosting. I'm assuming she means those store bought tubs of frosting. But that consistency would be easier to get a very smooth surface with just a stencil and an old gift card without much fussing.

It's funny I'd been umming and ahhing about finally finding out which type of paste to get for all these lovely paste techniques, I'd just watched her recent video with the ice cream design made by colouring embossing paste and decided to get the brand she talked about... It's Wendy Vecchi's white embossing paste and in typical impulse purchase fashion I bought some online today along with a set of plastic palette knives. Now, whether the impulse to try out the many techniques is still there when the paste arrives is another matter...

I also subscribe to the card kit with that same ice cream stamp. So today, I decided to visit an art store that my train passes. They didn't have embossing paste, but they did have various types of modeling paste. I got a regular one. I also got the same kind of craft knife. I expected the card kit to be at my house when I got home, but nope. So now, I'm hoping I will be in the mood to make that same card when my kit comes (tomorrow, the next day?).

Fingers crossed your kit arrives soon! I think I need to go brush up on some ideas for using the paste with stencils as that's the first technique I want to try.

If I'm not mistaken, that SSS August kit will ship 7/17-7/24. I'm a subscriber so now I think I will finally take the plunge and order some of embossing paste so I can make that ice cream card JM made. This will only be my 5th month subscribed and I have been so happy with the value!

Now I'm wondering how Ranger's new texture paste differs from these. It seems darn hard to find embossing paste in brick-and-mortar stores, just modeling, and those tiny vats of designer embossing paste seem awfully expensive. (This is the thing I'm talking about: www.simonsaysstamp.com/product.aspx?id=304275 )

I tried a homemade recipe a few months ago, that was white glue, white acrylic paint & baking soda. It worked ok when I first made it but was dried up when I went to use it this past weekend. I was contemplating trying spackle vs. modelling paste.

I've been wanting some embossing paste and couldn't find any just the modeling/molding paste, nice to know that they're essentially the same thing. Thanks for the info.

I have modeling paste. I like it. Its by VIVA. I also got some from the art store to try that was wayyyyyy cheaper. I think it was liqutex or a brand like that.
Jennifer McGuire posted yesterday the difference between Tim Holtz new product and Dream Weavers. Doesn't appear to be much difference, the Tim Holtz stuff is cheaper though.

I was contemplating trying spackle vs. modelling paste. I know of someone who uses spackle from the hardware store. She loves it. I haven't tried it, but love the idea of taking the everyday, utilitarian items and making them into something beautiful.

I finally used the embossing paste the Jennifer McGuire talks about last night on a card, and although I don't have anything to compare it to because I've never done that technique before, I have to say I LOVED it. Incredibly easy to work with and the results were amazing! The only thing I didn't like was the time I had to wait for it to dry (30 minutes or so), but if I had known I was going to try it out I could have planned my card a little better!

I ended up buying the Wendy Vecchi as well. I'm having so much fun! It is harder to spread than I thought it would be.

Another home made version that has not dried up. 2oz baby powder 1 tbl spoon white acrylic paint. 1 tbl spoon Mod Podge Warm water. mix all together in a jar.
Needs a quick stir before each use and is not a bright white, but that maybe because I only used a cheap paint. I have used this mix on cards, canvases, book covers and canvas paper. It seems to stay flexible. Ordinary PVA did not work so well.

I've used both modeling paste and embossing paste and I much prefer the embossing paste. I use the Wendy Vecchi paste. It is light and fluffy and easier to work with than modeling paste - much better for cards since it doesn't weigh the card down. She also has a clear embossing paste that dries and looks like clear glossy accents - very cool through a stencil. Another product she has is crackle embossing paste, which crack as it dries - I love the stuff! Wendy has a bunch of videos on you tube with tutorials for different techniques. I carry it in the store and it's hard to keep it in stock!

Now I'm really tempted since I've seen a number of videos using various types of paste. Leaning towards the Wendy V paste since I've heard lots of good things about it.

Initially, I was concerned about the price, but I think the WV tub will last a long while.
