We are looking at new furniture and I have once again vetoed any recliners due to our cats. I'm terrified that a cat will get under it, one of the boys will slam the foot rest down and then we'd have a very gross and heartbreaking situation to deal with.
My family thinks I'm nuts. But this is a valid concern, right? Lol! Especially when you have 2 boys that you know aren't going to check each time.
I would like one also but it's one of those irrational fears. I was the same way when the boys were little and people offered them non-Mylar balloons.
So am I crazy or reasonable...

The cat survived but it was touch and go for a while. After that situation I'll never have a recliner and cat together in the same house again, even though I know it's probably not the most common of occurrences. I'm just not willing to the take the chance.

I have a lifetime of cats and recliners in the same house and never had a problem. The only time I was extra watchful was when we had a very small kitten.

We have a recliner that doesn't slam down. It's automated and you push a button. It reclines slowly. Maybe something like that would be an option? Assuming you really want a recliner. The one we have is dh's and its in his office.

We have a recliner that doesn't slam down. It's automated and you push a button. It reclines slowly. I was going to suggest something like that. Our last living room furniture (sofa and chair) all had electric recliner functions. They went up and down slowly, and it always gave our cat time to get out without getting stuck or worse.

WE have 3 adults 3 dogs and 3 recliners. I know we don't have cats but. Our 3 pound Gadget loved to lay under the recliners because it is kinds dark under there. So we have had many times where he has been under there and someone has had to come to the aid of the person in the chair. But usually we would feel him going under there. Since we have had our power recliners he hasn't done it. I think the motor being under the chair helped him not want to go under there. but Pearl likes to lay under the foot rest. but she will move when the chair starts coming down.

I've never known my cat to climb up and into or behind...or in the way of any mechanism of any of our reclining furniture.
With that said, I imagine the outcome would be dreadful and I always am slow to begin moving so that in the one in a zillion chance she decided at the age of 14 to climb up there, she's got opportunity to make noise or get out.
With that said, I am SO done with reclining furniture. I will fight tooth and nail to only have a single recliner for DH if he insists...but our couches and loveseats will NOT recline. Ever. Again.

We have an electric recliner and two very small dogs. It reclines very slowly, so ample time for the fur babies to get out from under you.

We have recliners and cats, and all is well. Though I do acknowledge that occasionally one of us will say "Don't put your feet down---Peanut's under there!", etc. She does like to saunter under the footrest and rub her chin on it.

My aunts cat likes to climb under her recliner when nobody is sitting in it. She has the wing back chair style so there is a big open area under the chair but the cat will climb up under the chair and lay on what ever is under the seat part of the chair. I haven't figured out what she lays on but I have never gotten under the chair to look. But when you sit in the chair and pull out the foot rest she will run out from under and the first time she did it she freaked me out.

This is a little off topic... the other day in the grocery store they made an announcement for a person with such and such car to watch for the cat under or on the left tire. Cats are sneaky. I'd worry about small kittens and a recliner.
I think an electric recliner is a great option.

I have a recliner with a separate footstool so no chance of anything slamming down. My cat loves sitting under the footstool as it has a circular base.

I had no idea there were electric ones. I'll definitely check those out.

As a kid we had recliners and cats and the would sleep under there, people would get up close up the recliner and the cat would usually get stuck under with no way out, until we heard kitty cries. But there was usually enough space for them and the reclining parts of the chair.

Many cars and many recliners and no one ever squished. I have had an occasional cat check it out under there but have never had a problem.

2 cats currently but 5 cats within the span of 2-4 recliners in the house and with a toddler to preteen and not one single time did they get squished. One even prefers to lay under there but moved fast if anyone started to move from the chair.
