Has anyone taken their existing deck & turned it into a screened in porch? If so, are you happy you did it? Do you use it? Thanks.

We did this in our previous house and we loved it. We put a roof, screened around the entire deck, put carpet on the floor. We lived out there in the summer, it was the most used room in the house. That's what I miss most about that house.

We haven't, but we would like to. Our neighbors did it and they live out there! They said it extends their very small family room.

We kind of did....our deck is on the 2nd story and we screened in the space below it so the deck was actually part of the ceiling of the screened room. We use it all the time....all weather! We have ceiling fans to help cool and a small gas firepit to help warm.
LOVE IT!

I want to do this so bad! I wonder if the existing deck will be able to hold the new ceiling and roof. I am afraid that I will have to rebuild my deck to hold the extra weight!

My parents did it to my childhood home. It went from being a deck to a covered deck to a three-season room. It was pretty awesome. It was one re-model away from being an actual room. In the 15 years since they've sold the house, new owners (I think the house is on its 3rd owner since my parents sold it) turned it into a regular room with instulation, regular windows and drywall.
In their current home, they've done the same thing. The little deck is now screened in. They only use it to grill though. I keep telling DH I'd love to turn our front porch into a screened in porch but we have other projects that need to be done first.

I have thought of doing this but I would miss the expanse and openness when looking out and up. the open deck is not so fun during the rains but we've been in a drought so the rain days have been few. however, it's great in the afternoon and evenings.

Yep! But I'm in the South and so we can use it just about year round. We use our screened porch way more than we would use a deck. It also really shades that part of the house. Very useful on days like today when the temp is 105 for day 3 in a row. We do also have a very small deck portion remaining for the grill and a landing at the top of the stairs going to the yard.

It would be very easy for use to screen in our back patio. The roof is part of the house we could put screens up but then we would be sitting in a very small room and the dogs wouldn't have very good access to the yard. Plus we have been here a month and we haven't had any problems with bugs.

No, but I want to so much! Our deck is pretty big and in full sun so it gets too hot to spend time on in heat of summer.
If you go to "Between Naps On The Porch" I believe hers started out as a deck and if you click on porches there are some pictures of others.
I really hope to do ours in the next year or two. I know we would use it more.

2 years ago turning our deck into a screened in porch was our original thought... but once we started the plans grew and changed big time (as did the draining of our budget). Our "screened in porch" is now an addition. It has sliders across 2 walls and tons of windows - we lovingly refer to it as "the fishbowl" because of the amount of glass. The room isn't huge but it is probably the most used room in the house. Dh & I even did our first masonry project there - we built a stone fireplace.

We didn't have to do this - we built a screened porch onto the house during construction. One thing I'd highly recommend is screening UNDER the decking also.

We go back and forth about this very topic. I like the deck because I want a place to sit outside. I would like the room because it would be useful for a larger part of the year (If we insulated it and had heat in it). We just redid our deck in all composite, so we won't be doing anything right now!

Word of caution ( since I see this all the time at work ) make sure your structure can handle the extra dead load. If you need to, then beef it up. I can't tell you how many of these fail every winter because they were never supposed to have that kind of weight. ( snow loads for the northerners and check wind loads for you southerners )
However, when done right it can be an awesome space Especially if you like being outside but need to be rid if the bugs.

We have a covered patio out back, as opposed to a deck. We have ceiling fans and lights and comfy furniture. I would love to have it enclosed with screened walls. The way it is now, it's pleasant enough in the day time, but the minute dusk falls, the mosquitoes come around and I'm done. I am a mosquito magnet for some reason and just can't stand them, so I go inside the minute I see even one. I'm sure I would use it more if I didn't have to worry about that!

Best thing we ever did. It feels as if we added another family room and we use it all the time (weather permitted). Also, the ceiling fan makes a huge difference in there too. We also have the screening underneath the deck as suggested above.

We have a decent sized low deck in the back that almost never gets used because it's on the west side of the house and SO hot in the full sun on summer afternoons. Our house also isn't what could even remotely be considered open concept, so we have no nice gathering spaces for larger numbers of guests.
I think it would be awesome to rip off our deck and redo it so it could be a year round sunroom with French doors between it and our dining area (where our sliding door currently is located) to expand the space where people naturally seem to gather, and add a paved patio outside of that at ground level for the grill, etc. I doubt it will ever happen, but it's sure fun to think about!

My deck, after 15 years, is not in good shape. My plan is to tear it out and build a sunroom, and then a patio beyond that.

My best friend is having this done off the back of her condo now. I think it's as much for her indoor cat as for her!
