Isn't that terrible? Absolutely preventable.
I HATE snakes, so why any person would have one as a pet is completely beyond my comprehension. Makes no sense.

I read this story earlier. How does one even *get* a cobra for a pet? Surely that can't be legal. I hope it's caught soon and sorry that it will probably have to die because a person was reckless. And that poor kid's family

That's a nightmare situation! I hope they are able to find it. Maybe it can go live at the zoo.

I read this earlier. Sorry you are in that neighborhood. That would scare me. I'd fear for me, my kids, and my pets.
Is it legal to own a cobra? Is it possible it is in the car hiding somewhere? WTH would someone want to own a deadly cobra?

WTH would someone want to own a deadly cobra? It's in my general area...but not in my actual neighborhood, proper. I'm not seriously worried that the snake will get me or my little dog. Still creepy. And all the talk on Facebook right now… I think it is legal to own the snake – but you must have permits. I don't know if he had the proper permits. His parents did own an exotic pet store in a neighboring town.

This story is local to me also. I have known his mom and his grandparents for over 30 years. They are a very nice family. Yes, they own a local exotic pet store. And also a very nice flower shop here in town. His mother has long been a prominent member of our community. Very loving and caring woman. Grant was actually 20, I believe. I don't think the snake was a pet. There is speculation that he was selling the snake. And the Austin reptile expert who helped on scene believes that there is evidence that the snake was sold and probably someone has it but doesn't want to say because of possibly having it illegally. Grant had the proper permits to have the snake but not sure if he had permits to sell the snake. This young man was an amazing individual. He volunteered his time to take the animals to our local youth club many times. The kids loved him and loved seeing his animals. This was truly his life's passion. The comments on our local stations (not Austin) are overwhelmingly supportive of the family. As a community, we are heartbroken for their loss. Please keep them in your prayers and/or good thoughts as they deal with this unbelievable tragedy. There is still so much that isn't known, but we do know this family has lost a son, brother, grandson, etc. and is grieving. My heart breaks for them.

I truly feel sorry for he young man and his family. It is a tragedy. But if he was selling the snake...it is a pet for someone. And I don't think anybody needs to keep this kind of animal for a "pet". FTR, I feel the same way about chimpanzees or Koalas or any other animal that is not truly domesticated and could be a risk to harm someone. I question whether someone has the snake. If so, then when did this young man get bitten? Did He get bitten during the transfer? If so, did the person buying the snake just leave him for dead?

I don't disagree with you, but right now it's all just questions with no answers. They aren't even sure if the snake is lost in RR or Temple. His last Facebook post said, "I'm sorry" so there is even some suicide speculation. I sincerely hope that is not the case. My only point is this was a very loved young man and family. Obviously he made a very bad choice and it cost him his life. Such a sad situation.

So very sad. I used to live in the subdivision right next to RR Hospital for 14 years. I know the area well. Rattle snakes in the neighbors garage were scary enough to me. I can't imagine wanting to buy something like this. So sad for his family!

Having snakes is of interest to some people, just as having any other pet or animal can be. I'm glad there is someone here who actually knew this young man so he isn't painted as being 'weird'. For someone growing up in a pet store environment I don't find it unusual at all, just sad that his life is now over. And I do hope the snake is found because it is frightening to think it might enter someone's home.

Thank you TXMary for sharing more of this story with us. I'm always amazed when someone here knows or is closely involved in situations/stories that we hear about. Such a tragedy, no matter what the circumstances. How in the world are they going to locate that snake, unless someone stumbles upon it? It's even more daunting than a needle in a haystack!

I'm glad that they're posting photos of the cobra because no one in Texas is going to see a brown snake and think "Cobra" and could confuse the cobra with a harmless brown snake and approach and then bam, the cobra rises to 1/3-1/2 their height and strike. They're incredibly aggressive.
The local pet store where I grew up had an owner who wanted a cobra. He had a huge specially reinforced tank and had done all this study on how to make the tank inescapable. Last I heard, he couldn't get the permits. Then there's the matter of keeping a supply of antivenom on hand just in case.
There's an exotic animal control squad attached to Miami/Dade sheriff's department that keeps exotic snake antivenoms on hand because there are so many snake owners and so many illegal smugglers in the area.
A cobra can kill someone in less than 20 minutes. It's a horrible way to die.
I feel so badly for the man's family. The not knowing what happened, the worries of if this loose snake is going to hurt someone or kill somebody.
I agree that I don't think ordinary citizens should be able to own venomous snakes.
I do believe that there are good reasons for scientists to keep these snakes. The venoms have a lot of information for scientists. Medicines have been developed from different venoms. The venom of the ocean cone snail is being studied as a new type of pain medication for people who no longer get relief from the pain meds we have now.
I really think it's irresponsible to have a deadly "pet" around other people.

I do find owning a venomous snake to be a huge responsibility and I don't know if it should be legal. I hope his family is able to find peace with his death. It is a very sad situation for them.

Very sad, but I can't understand anyone wanting a cobra for a pet. No snakes here (except in the zoo) for which I am VERY grateful

And that poor kid's family Those kinds of questions make me shudder. How does one get one and why? The guy in California who had the albino cobra. Why does anyone keep an albino cobra or any kind of cobra for a pet? The article said they are highly aggressive. In English it means get yo butt outa there! I do know of a questionable pet store in town, so it could be possible. I just doubt it. I do not want to get nightmares that there are poisonous snakes in people's houses for fun. This is NOT a thing!

And I do hope the snake is found because it is frightening to think it might enter someone's home. Heavens, a good friend's daughter wants a boa. I suggested she go find a garter snake (her slightly older sister wanted to kill me). The younger sister said she researched the kind she wanted and how she would take care of it. Pet snake weird? I don't think so. If you feed it and handle it, I think it could be a pet. I wouldn't do it and I would cross the street to avoid a house that had a pet snake (I visit them at their grandparents' house!) A snake bred in captivity to become a family pet is not the end of the world.

The snake was found dead not far from where the young man was found. So all is well on that front. still tragic about the young man's death…
