I had never heard of scrapbooking until I saw CK magazine at the grocery store. I bought it and read it cover to cover and then went and bought some basic supplies. I remember my first layout was pink, gray, and white and everyone I showed it to thought it was cute but didn't "get it". They had never heard of this hobby either. I was so proud of that layout. I think I must have taken it apart and redid it at some point. My first time at a scrapbook store was great! All the paper! The employee said I could come in anytime for free crop time. I didn't know what crop meant!

Mine was finding 2Peas! I had never heard of or seen scrapbooking in the more modern, creative sense: I had only seen CM-style scrapping advertised in non-scrapping magazines and the kinds of pages my MIL makes. So when someone in an online parenting group shared a link to her layout posted in the 2Peas gallery, I was stunned! Paper! Really cute 3D stickers! Distressing! This was at the very end of 2003, around November. That Christmas, a month later, I received scrapbooking supplies for gifts from my mom, sister, and DH. I made my first page that January (2004) and have been hooked ever since!

After dd left for college, I saw an ad for a 'scrapbooking' class through the city at the library. She was a CTMH rep, but did not push her products in the class. Later, I found an ad for a local scrapbooking group, and joined. That was fall of 2004, been hooked ever since.

I kept scrapbooks since I was a kid in the 1970's. But the old school kind where you pasted photos and memorabilia onto plain pages in a scrapbook album.
I don't know exactly how I learned about artsy-craftsy scrapbooking, except that I discovered it around '00 or '01. Probably saw a magazine or saw something online.

Like tracyarts, I've scrapbooked since I was a young teen. I remember cutting pictures of Scott Baio out of Tiger Beat and Teen Beat magazine and putting them all in a scrapbook. Back then you could also buy the scrapbooks with the pages (cardstock) already in them.
However, as to the more current type of scrapbooking, sometime in 2006 I couldn't sleep late one night and was scanning the TV for something to watch. I ended up on either QVC or HSN and they were doing scrapbook supplies. Right then and there, I decided I wanted to do that. However, it wasn't until several months later when I reconnected with an old high school friend who did scrapbook that I really got involved in it.

My senior year of high school (83) we could buy a memory book. it had pages for different events of your year. I didn't reconnect until someone introduced me to Creative Memories in 1998.

We went to visit family just before our oldest son left home for two years. My SIL knew I was having a hard time with my son's imminent departure, and she asked if I knew what scrapbooking was. She was a former CMC. She helped me do a page. We had no LSS where I lived. I hunted up a CMC in my area, but she took a dim view of the way I wanted to scrapbook, especially since I had chosen to stamp my first page. My SIL and I both loved stamping. I started scrapping almost 20 years ago. A lot has changed since I first was introduced to the hobby.

I was invited to a Creative Memories home party by a friend. I was reluctant to go because I hate home parties. I immediately fell in love with the scrapbooking idea but soon left CM far behind and followed my own style.

It was 1999. I was sitting in Joann's looking at patterns. My hobby was sewing. My last kid had just got married. I had nothing I wanted to sew. I overheard a customer talking to a clerk and heard the word "scrapbooking". I didn't know exactly what it was but I knew I wanted to do it. I went home without buying any fabric or patterns and goggled and found the creating keepsakes website and my new hobby. This is one of my first pages and one of the last big sewing projects. That dress probably has at least $100 of lace in it. This photo is probably one of very few times she wore it. I think my finances came out ahead when I stopped sewing.

It was 1998 and I was 9 months pregnant with my 2nd child when a friend invited me to her CM party. I was pretty much hooked from the get go. Scrapbooking was my "thing" for a long time.

I think it was late 2002 or early 2003 and my friend asked me to go to a scrapbook class at the LSS. It was a store that was a few blocks from where she lived (I was an hour away). I didn't know exactly what she was talking about but I said yes I'd go. She told me to bring pictures.
After the class I remember looking at the ladies who were occupying the other tables. They had tons of supplies and were making elaborate (what I thought at the time) pages. They were so passionate about their pages. I clearly remember saying to my friend, "The class was fun but I'll NEVER be like those ladies. They have so much stuff." Twelve years later I'm now the poster child for supply hoarding and I love the hobby now more than ever! I wish I could eat my words because they have come back to haunt me!

One of the moms at preschool invited me to a CM party when DS was 3 and DD was just a few months old. I don't even know how I managed to carve out the time to go, but I immediately knew I had found a new crafty passion.

I was a stamper before I ever heard of scrapbooking. My very first experience was a CMC that came and gave a "free" demonstration to our stamp club sometime in the early 1990's or so--except that we had to pay $5 for the supplies which were nothing to write home about. I wasn't impressed AT ALL. She told us to bring 5-7 photos from an event to make a page with, and I just remember sitting there not wanting to cut the photos into ovals and hearts, LOL.
Fast forward to about 1998, and by then I had my own stamp store and was looking for ways to branch out into other papercrafts. Provo Craft was just starting to come out with their cutesy patterned papers (in letter size, of course) and some stickers and diecuts. I liked that the patterns papers, diecuts and punch art also transitioned nicely into card making. It didn't take long before scrapbooking overtook the store and stamping took a back seat.
For me personally though, what sold me on scrapbooking was that it was something I could do that was creative, fun and just for ME and I liked that. Virtually every stamping project I ever made was either a card or gift for somebody else and nothing was ever anything I ever made to keep.

My very first scrapbook was a journal I started my 6th grade year. My mom passed away from cancer that year and my teacher gave it to me. I would write in it but also glue in pictures and quotes that I liked, so I guess it was kind of like a Smash Book. My first official grown up scrapbook was actually made for our adoption agency back in 2009. It was the book potential birthmothers looked at to learn about DH and me to decide if they wanted to meet to discuss an adoption plan. So the very first album that I worked on for months actually ended up being one I gave away! Although I did take pictures of the LOs! I really enjoyed the process of putting that book together, so I kept scrapping.

Mine was in 1997 when my girls were 3 years old. I went to my first CM party, and I had NO idea what I was doing. I kept asking the CM Rep questions and asking for help. She was rude to me from the get go. I had a very bad first experience, and I never went to another CM party ever. I am surprised I stuck with it because my first experience was not a good one. I guess she didn't want to make any sales!

A friend invited me over to scrapbook a page. "Just bring five photos, I have the rest". She was a CM consultant and I had wanted to start scrapbooking but didn't know where to begin. I was hooked. My first pages are all in the CM style - white page with colored card stock matting and sticker letters.

In 1996, when I was a sahm with my one year old, I saw an episode of the Aleens Craft Show on TV. They talked so bit about scrapbooking, and I thought hmmmm, that sounds interesting. I sent away for the info that they mentioned but didn't do anything with it. In Oct. of 1997 a friend mentioned that she had gone to a CM party, and bought a ton of stuff. She was raising a granddaughter who was the same age as my son. I took a look at her stuff, made a trip to Hobby Lobby for some basics (unfortunately that included decorative edge scissors, but hey, I own that first three ring 8 1/2 x 11 book!), and from then I was hooked. I still scrap a bit, and want to find time to do more.
Living in AR, it was a long time before I actually experienced a scrapbook store. In about 2000, while visiting family in Utah, I was able to go to three big stores, including Pebbles in My Pocket, in Orem I believe. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven! But we did eventually get some good LSS in my area, in fact there is still a small, but nicely run store about 10 miles away.

It was either late 1998 or early 99. I had only been married a few months, when I saw a book on scrapbooking in the book store in our small college town. I got to talking to the store owner, and she told me that the lady who owned the store across the street (not a scrapbooking store) taught scrapbooking classes. So I got a hold of her and we went to her next CM party (she was a consultant). I made my husband go with me cause we were soooooo in lOoooooovvveeee. (So I have two scrapbook pages my husband made from that class. I continued with CM through my wedding album and two baby albums. I was switching over styles around the time my 3rd child was born in 2004.
Funny story: After I had been scrapbooking a little while, magazines started coming out, and I was so excited. Until I read the magazine. I live in a small town, online shopping wasnt the thing it is now, and I didnt have access to any of the product listed with the pages. The magazine was a waste of money because I couldnt make what was in it. It never occurred to me that i could scraplift designs or use other themes. I obviously HAD to make my page exactly the same.

I immediately fell in love with the scrapbooking idea but soon left CM far behind and followed my own style. My SIL had a CM party. (2000) Already kind of knew I didn't like the style of cutting pictures into shapes and slapping sticker down. Then I went to local craft/scrapbook store and they were having crops. Thought hmmm.... signed up, went by myself to check it out and hooked ever since. Met a group of girls I still hang with (and scrap) there. One of those besties, had been doing it a while already and was ahead of the curve. Her page was looking awesome and I remember being somehow comfortable enough with her to jokingly say to her something like, " your pages are so GOOD! aren't you the little biotch." Why the heck I'd say that to someone I just met, I don't know. But it worked. We are close to this day. And she went home and told her hubby, "I think I made a friend tonight. This one girl that called me a b!tch." He was . But hey, it worked.

I do not remember a time when I was not scrapping in some form. My mother has two scrapbooks from high school in the late 60s and as a child I thought it was the most spectacular thing ever (with the exception of her two charm bracelets). My first book started with middle school in 1984. Back then of course it was a large photo album style book with paper pages. I used lots of masking tape and it was very plain with tickets stubs, pictures, notes from friends, ribbons and certificates from school but it was all I had. I then had a high school memory book with more of the same smash book style. After that, it was not until Creative Memories came along and my oldest ds was born that a new book was in order, I guess around 1998. I couldn't believe there was a whole world of product out there to support my passion of hoarding "stuff". I have made my family crazy over the years not letting anyone throw anything away in my home until it was clear with the crazy lady in charge of memory keeping.
I have learned how to stop saving everything and my style has changed but I have loved every minute of the process.

I had a scrapbook in high school, the black page kind with photo corners to hold things. Around the time we were going to have our first grandchild, a niece asked for an Archiver's gift card for Christmas. I thought Archiver's sold photo albums and the like! I walked in and it was like the angels began to sing I started buying a few things and a post bound album. My first pages were about a baby shower for DDIL.

Anyone remember Rag Shop? I was shopping there for some other hobby (I'm pretty sure it was those painted sweatshirts) and I came across an aisle labelled 'Memory Books'. Intrigued, I wandered in and have never come back! Actually, that day I came home with an issue of Creating Keepsakes, some patterned paper (8.5x11), some stickers, a glue pen and a pair of decorative scissors. It's been downhill for our finances ever since!

My mother kept old fashioned scrapbooks and so did I from my earliest years. In fact, I now incorporate the stuff I kept in those scrapbooks into my pages - I use lots of memorabilia.
I had seen someone's CM album at a craft show but there was no way I could afford those products for all my photos. So I saw a scrapbook kit in KMart and asked my husband for it for Christmas 1998. There were no scrapbook stores around yet and the craft store had nothing yet.
I had no idea what I was doing. The kit came with a flimsy white chipboard album, about 10 white papers, 4 crappy colored markers, a shape template, a pair of deco scissors and some photo squares.
There were no page protectors, no extra papers, and no directions. I got right into it and quickly realized that I was just making a mess. I mean, I had only ever seen the one scrapbook at the craft show and I remembered that she had a picture cut in a circle with journalling around the picture and that was about all I could remember.
The beginning of scrapbooking was a process of trial and error, with me pretty much starting over whenever new products came on the market. It was when I found a Memory Makers magazine in the store that I began to see what I was supposed to be doing. At that time all layouts were pretty much cardstock and sticker sneeze with wonky cropping in strange shapes.
Everything I scrapped in my first 5 years of scrapping has been completely redone, and sometimes redone twice.

I was watching TV one day and saw 2 women showing how to scrapbook. I had photos from 2 vacations in '98 & '99. I thought how easy that was and a few days later went to Lasting Memories in Lynnwood, WA. Jennifer, the owner, said I was welcome to use their class area as needed to work on my scrapbook. If I ran out of something, I was at the mother ship, it worked out great. I did scrapbooks for about 5 years, then got into making cards and ATC's. I had read a few card books and developed the ideas into my scrap pages, then lost my work space at home and did just cards. I now have a 14' X 18' studio that is too small. I am retired and work in my studio when I want to. I don't have to put my stuff away each time, and everything is just as I left it ... unfortunately that includes the messy clutter.

It was 1997. My DS was an infant at the time. I took a class through our community education program. It was advertised as a class to organize your photos. The ad said something to the affect of, "are your pictures in shoeboxes and you do not know what to do?". I'm like, " Heck yeah!". So when I arrived at my first class and saw paper, scissors and glue I was all over that! The very next day I went to my local JoAnn's and saw my first scrapbooking magazine, bought it and was hooked ever since.

It was about 2003 and my then housemate hosted a CM party at our place. I cut 6 photos of my cat into various shapes and used the two strips and two triangles that all the CM hosts used in their parties at that time (you could buy pre-cut packs of them to save time!)
My housemate kept scrapping with some of her friends and I overheard them talking about shops that were just filled with scrapbooking supplies. I think I visited 3 or 4 the next weekend. I then found two peas and was totally hooked.

It was probably 1998 and I saw in our adult night school brochure a one-night class by a CM person to learn how to make a scrapbook page. I brought a friend, the request 5-7 photos. I was hooked - even after I cut pictures of my 40th birthday party into funky shapes, and "enhanced" them with triangles. About the same time, a twin-mom friend had gone to a CM party and thought it would be a good activity for our club to scrap pictures of the 20 years of our club. She ended up being a CM demonstrator; I was definitely her best customer!!
My mom had the old-fashioned style of scrapbooks from her HS days; guess I got the "hold on to stuff forever" gene from her!

This is such a fun thread to read! In college, my mom mentioned Scrapbooking and how she thought I might enjoy it. I didn't really get it. I'm not even sure how she had heard of it, but she was referring to Creative Memories and their style. Then at my first job at a kid-centered non-profit in 2000-2001, I needed to come up with a creative way to showcase what our agency did. We had tons of photos and I thought putting them in an album would be an easy way to do so, plus it was portable to take around to fundraising events, etc. I bought an idea book from Walmart with page layouts and supplies. I was kind of limited to what Walmart carried, because we were in a small town. I pretty much scrap lifted those pages from the idea book. Yup, I also got PAID to scrap at my desk at work. I was hooked after that album and decided to start scrapping my own photos. The rest is history

Hi all! I'm new here to 2peas refugees. I've been memory keeping for as long as I can remember. I've always been obsessed with paper and pens and anything that goes with all that. I saved everything and kept "scrapbooks" of all the things I did (they were just glued down programs, ticket stubs, photos, etc.). I was actually the "historian" (fancy word for scrapbooker) for my local 4-H chapter for a year and really enjoyed that...I was probably 10 or 11. Then, in 1999, after going to Vegas with my boyfriend (now my hubby), I found a scrapbook store near our apartment and fell in love with all the "special" supplies. I bought a few pens (the Zig double ended markers...swoon) and some papers and a bunch of those scissors with the fancy edges as well as a spiral bound album and started creating. While it's absolutely horrible (cutting photos into shapes and then matted) by "current" standards, I absolutely love it. I quickly created another one from my trip to Mexico the year before. AFter that, I started collecting more than creating...had a bit of a block with how the trend tended to go (12x12 never did and still doesn't work with my brain) but once I found what worked for me (Project Life!), I was back!
