I'm cleaning out little lock box at work that has decades of castoff keys in it.
Most without labels or tags. The ones with tags, though-- are a hoot. "Julio's ladder rack". . . "Debra's office" ... "padlock for ladders at People's Bank"?
Most people here don't remember Julio or Debra. We surely don't still have the vehicle that held Julio's ladder rack.
I have an urge to toss most of them, but then, ya never know...

Just did the same thing. Threw out a key that I could not remember what it was for and had not used it in forever. Obviously didn't need it. Until the following week. Luckily DH had copy on his key chain.
Isn't it always that way? Throw it out and you will need it pronto. Don't throw it out and you will never use it again.

Ahh, mystery keys! I'm almost always afraid to trash them! But, those labels sound like you're safe to get rid of them.

My husband would keep every key "just in case." I'm willing to throw away anything that's unidentified. As a result, I'm pretty sure he hides any that he finds from me and I toss any I find before he knows about them. Lol.

At home I would put them in the container where I put all the other strange little orphan bits.

Hang on to them! Someday, they will be antiques! Haven't you seen all the things you can do with antique keys on Pinterest?

Maybe they could be used to make a lovely mobile/wind chime craft.

I hate getting rid of keys... especially if I'm not quite sure what they are for!!!
Somehow I lost MIL's keys to her Florida house. I know I did not throw them away, but for the life of me, I cannot find them!

My key ring has so many random keys it is like Schneider's keychain (we'll see who gets my 70s TV reference on that one). It is sadly ridiculous and I can't make myself get rid of them so they travel around with me "just in case."

It is sadly ridiculous and I can't make myself get rid of them so they travel around with me "just in case." "One day at Time"... I like that reference! Instead of a mystery key, we have a mystery lock. I think at one time we had a key to the front door but I don't know where it is. We often discuss changing out that lock but have never gotten around to it. The front screen door locks and we always use the car port door into the house instead of the front door.

When my parents bought their current home, the former owner handed them a ring of keys for the house at closing. There were several keys on it. We tried to figure out what they were all for, and we could only figure out a few. There were the doors to the front and back door, of course. A few were bedroom doors. One was an interior door between a sunroom and the kitchen. Another was an interior door between the garage and the hall. That left about 6 mystery keys. My mom still has those mystery keys in her desk drawer. They have lived in that house for 30 years, now, LOL! I highly doubt they still have any forgotten doors or panels that might be opened by any of those keys, but she keeps them anyway.

I love keys. I keep all the keys.. I have keys from when we cleaned out my mother in laws house. No body knew what to do with them. They were all in a bowl in a drawer. I said I will take them. some of them are the old style keys. Some of them are regular keys but a few of them are odd shaped keys. I know they don't go to anything that we have but they are here in a container.

We just had our house fumigated and had to lock up our valuables. The good keys are mixed up with the unknown keys.i told my husband that now would be a good time to sort them out and toss the unneeded ones, but he refused. So, we locked them up, and brought them all back out when the fumigation was done. I know, I should just take care of it, but I leave the house business to DH. I'll be honest, I'm a bit afraid to toss them.

We also have a lot of random keys. When we last moved we found a pile of them and although we probably should have tossed them a long time ago, I'm glad we didn't. One of the keys was for our cartop carrier, which we definitely needed. OF course, once we found that one, we didn't have the heart to throw any of them away!

<-----Married to a locksmith who can identify keys on sight (ie, goes to a padlock, cabinet lock, car lock, door lock, etc). We have no random keys =)

We have a mystery lock. It's outside under our house number near the garage door. Just a random keyhole in the siding...

Maybe they could be used to make a lovely mobile/wind chime craft. I never throw away keys. I have two glass quart jars full of them. I am intending some day to make some sort of art project with them. In the mean time I use them for door stops.

I have an old metal coffee can almost full of abandoned keys. The belonged to my late FIL and I can't bring myself to get rid of them. Instead I added our mystery keys to his.
