Last night I slipped and fell in the bathroom, and this morning I woke up with my left side on fire!
It hurts so bad every time I move the slightest bit! Just got back from the doctor, X-Rays do not show any breaks, so that's good. But now I'm sitting on the couch against an ice pack, waiting for DH to get back from the pharmacy with the pain meds the doc prescribed.
Did I mention it hurts?!
Anybody have any experience with this? How long does it take to get tolerable? I can't even take a deep breath without my whole side going into a very painful spasm.

BTDT. Be sure to take your pain meds so you can breathe normal. You do not want pneumonia to set in.

Oh no. Do use the meds to stay on top of the pain and let your family do the chores and cooking this weekend. I'm sorry that you're injured. OWWWW is probably an understatement.

DD bruised her ribs boogie boarding a couple of years ago. We didn't realize what had happened until we went on a hike and the poor thing was in real pain just breathing. Eating/swallowing was also uncomfortable. She didn't take anything more than Tylenol, restricted her activity and ate lightly for a couple of days. It sounds like you have a deeper/bigger bruise than she did, so I hope you have a quick recovery.

Bike crash, handlebar to the sternum. Nothing broken, thought I was dying. Real pain for about 4-6 weeks. It was 3 years ago so time is fuzzy. It was about 7 months before I didn't have pain if I moved wrong.

I bruised my ribs in a car accident... I don't know if it was the airbag, the seatbelt, or the fact that I was 7 months pregnant that did it, but it was very painful. l hope you heal quickly!

Ok, I'll try, but moving is not in the cards until the meds kick in. I guess I should be glad he isn't my regular doc. My PCP is off today so I saw someone in the same practice.

I found the recovery long. I slept in a recliner for a good month. It was agony to lay down!

I've had terrible rib pain over the last few weeks, and it's so important to take pain meds on time. If you can have them every four hours, then make sure you do that. Don't think you can wait another half hour or so; your aim is to stop the 'pain gate' from opening. You will find it easier to sleep if you're propped up, and hug a pillow or cushion hard if you need to cough or sneeze. Ouch!

OUCH!!!!!!! I know that bruised ribs hurt. I bruised my ribs in a car accident back in 1985. I was hurting for months. I also hurt other parts of my body. Hope you heal quickly. Do take the pain meds even if you are feeling better because you still need to breath to keep your lungs healthy.

How did you find the pain to present? All the time, most the any movement, or calmed with pain meds?
For me, if I move wrong, say something that tugs on ligaments or tendons of muscles on that side, I'm not sure exactly what the exact trigger is, but I get an excruciating spasm if I move wrong. Also if I sniffle, or take a deep breath. The pain medicine does help for a few hours, and I feel like I can move around a bit more. But no matter how I try to move gently, I will suddenly get a spasm that will take my breath away.
An unexpected sniffle, a deep breath, and I'm in agony. and turning my body to the side on my left. In the car when my DH makes a right turn is absolutely excruciating. Whenever ligaments/muscles/soft tissue pulls on my left side ribs in anyway, I can count on my left side spasming.
I've got pain meds from the doctor, but I am hoping that someone has an idea on how to unspasm the muscles.
Anyone?

It takes a good 6 weeks to recover. I bruised my ribs in a car accident.
Be sure you take the pain meds on a regular schedule. They are much less effective if you wait until you are in pain to take them.
Also, read the label carefully. Some pain meds can cause nausea when you stop taking them suddenly. They will tell you to wean yourself off of them.
Ouch - I wish you a speedy recovery.

I fell down the stairs backwards, hit the banister post on the way down then a large dog broke my fall. I managed to fracture one and bruise a few ribs. The dog was unscathed but I thought I was going to perish, knocked the wind out of me for quite a while. Luckily it happened on a Friday night so had a few days to recover at home. Went to work that Monday and had to have people move close since I could barely talk, it was awful. Really took breathing for granted until I had that lovely experience. Took about about 6 weeks to heal.
Hope you feel better soon.

Broken / bruised ribs are no joke. The funny thing about ribs is that they don't often appear as fractured on an x-ray for a few days after some of the swelling decreases. If you are still having significant pain by Tuesday, go back to your PMD and get another chest x-ray. Now, there really isn't anything that you do for broken ribs but you may need more pain meds. If you do get more meds, I'd ask for some Zoran too. The last think you need is to be vomiting from the pain meds. Talk about pain!!!

Week two. Yesterday, I had to run some errands, so did not take the prescribed pain medicine. Brought my teen so with me, to do any lifting.
Lots of walking, though, which seemed to help.
So tonight, when DH and DS wanted to take a walk, I went with them.
Omg, pain from the beginning, increasing to the end. I'm now sitting under a huge bag of ice.
I just wish I could get a handle on this! I can sit in a position comfortably at one point, the next minute my muscles spasm and I'm in agony!
Sleeping is the worst! There is no comfortable position.
Ugh! I'm venting, I know it will get better, but I'm hating life right now!

Keep moving. Have another set of xrays done. Make sure that a lung is not punctured. By now Advile should be working. Keep moving. Get a second set of xrays done. Bruised ribs are painful.
