Fire shuts down highway
And traps cars/people on the highway. Several cars are on fire. I just turned on the news and saw this happening in So Ca. I have never seen anything like this before. This must be scary for the people on the highway.

Hope they get it under control quickly. Bad news on a Friday afternoon with commute traffic. Glad no one was injured.

Many years ago, my in laws had Ca. Highway Patrol escort them through this exact same scenario. They said it was the scariest thing, with fire already on both sides of the freeway, and they couldn't see a thing. Luckily, everyone made it safely on that day. The thing is, there is another way around, but it takes an additional two hours. I would think that I would gladly drive two hours out of my way to avoid FIRE.

The Cedar Fire in San Diego in 2003 jumped the 15 freeway. It was terrifying. I live very close to the area where the fire was and the freeway is 10 lanes wide. It is so scary to think about how powerful these fires can get, and we aren't even in fire season yet.
I'm thinking about all of the first responders out there today. They are truly heroes. And I'm so sad for the victims.

I'm pretty sure that fires jump the freeways often in SoCal. They do in my area. Almost every other fire here does that. It's pretty windy here today.

At Cajon Pass of all places. Where do the people who have to abandon their vehicles even go?

Holy cow, I can't even imagine. Living where we do and the lack of rain this year means fire is a serious threat for us. Yesterday there was a car fire on the mountain freeway about 2 miles from my house.

We have our fair share of fires here in No. CA and certainly some have jumped a highway or two. But I have never seen cars trapped and burning like this before.
It looks like they have stopped the fire spreading to other cars. That is a good thing because there sure a lot of cars there.
What a mess.

Scary. That's a crazy busy section of freeway and people drive nuts there. I'm sure traffic was backed up and people just had to abandon their cars and run.
Secondary to to the safety issues - this has got to be an unbelievable traffic mess. That is one of the main routes in and out of the la basin and it's often busy.
We were caught in a brush fire on the freeway a few years ago. It's pretty scary.

They said all the cars are being abandoned because there is no way to get them out

Fires often jump freeways, but this is the first time I have seen cars and semis catch fire. I just turned on the news and they are saying 70-80 vehicles have been abandoned and emergency responders are hoping the keys have been left in them. The fire fighters have had to hike up past these cars to try knock down the car fires. This is a steep canyon pass with limited road access. The only good news is it looks like the brush fire has moved on and more cars are not catching fire.

Yes it is pretty scary. One of my friends that lives in the area posted pictures of the smoke on her FB. I don't think they will be evacuated because they are far enough away. My heart goes out to the people that got stuck, the first responders, and anyone who was evacuated. Stories are still developing on the local news outlets.

Live coverage on local Las Vegas channel. This is the main travel route between LA and Las Vegas. Friday night is obviously a big travel night to Vegas.
The fire is growing, but it's moved away from the highway. It's getting close to some scattered homes and ranches as it moves up the mountain.

They are reporting 20 cars burned 10 more damaged. Two big rigs destroyed and two more damaged. Five houses destroyed. This fire grew so fast. It was crazy watching it online. In half an hour it was 500 acres at four hours it is almost 4k or maybe it is I haven't seen a report lately. This canyon is crazy they said it just acts like a wind tunnel. I know I hate driving it under good conditions. I don't know how but I hope they can get it under control soon. Watching the footage of the tankers dropping retardant has been fascinating. I hope the people stranded can get home soon.

DH called me from downtown and could see the plume of smoke from the freeway miles away.
We watched on the news and the power of fire is scary and incredible.

Oh no! we aren't in SoCal (OC) anymore, but I have few friends who drive into the OC for work and take this route home to the desert. I am in Tahoe and sadly our fires always jump highways and lots of distance due to pine tress. Prayers for all involved.

Oh my gosh! This is the first I've heard about it. I noticed clouds over that way, and I didn't realize it was probably smoke. How awful! Turning on the news now.

I worked a season with the USFS in the Cleveland Nat'l Forest, so I know a thing or two about wildfire. Also, I lived about two miles from FAA TRACON SAN DIEGO during the Cedar Fire. A couple of families in my church lost their homes. Daughter, granddaughter, and I were packed and ready to go if an evacuation was ordered.
I remember pictures in the news of I-15 traffic being turned around and exiting by way of the on-ramp behind my home. It was very scary. Southern California is likely to have a very bad fire season this year, what with the drought and the damage to the forests from the bark beetles.

To read the description is one thing. To see the pictures of the cars on fire is another thing entirely. I can't even begin to imagine how scary it must have been for the motorists involved in that fire. How scary.

It is devastating. I have a few friends stuck in traffic there for over 8 hours, but thankful they are ok. No idea if anyone I know got hurt. Praying for everyone involved or in danger.
