in your area? We have a lot of elaborate tattooing around here, piercing and gauges, and in the last few months we have really noticed small body modifications and implants like these. The people we have seen them on aren't heavily tattooed or pierced, so I'm wondering if this is becoming a reversible alternative to tattooing. I've seen a few hearts but couldn't find a good photo online. Are you seeing these in your area?

I am sure they are over around here - I am in the Portland area, after all - but I've never noticed them. I am not inclined to be looking for things like that, though.

I had an ex who had several implants in... Various areas. But that was over a decade ago. I can't say that I have noticed them on anyone recently.
I though you meant breast implants because I've been seeing lots of those lately!

I am not inclined to be looking for things like that, though. We were in line behind a couple of guys with the ear ridge implants, then a few of days later behind a couple of girls with hearts & stars on their shoulders. I really don't remember noticing them before and now feel like a see one every time I go out, but I wouldn't be surprised if they have been around a while and I'm only noticing because I had them in my face for a few minutes.

I'm way more likely to be staring at my phone in the grocery line than the people in front of me LOL Not saying that's better by any means!!
And now that I'm more aware of those things, I'll probably try to look even less because they kind of skeeve me out. Like gauges. Man, those give me the heebie-jeebies.

Wow, I've never seen anything like that. I am highly allergic to...everything that goes in or on my body, so all I can think of is huge weeping sores and cysts and infection. Shudder.
I did an advertisement for something called the "Brazilian butt lift" at a plastic surgeons and am intrigued and confused. Is it like silicone implants in your rear? Or are the hauling it up and stapling, like a face lift? So many questions. My Brazilian butt lift is called squats, I swear I am going to do some tomorrow.

I do, but I'm involved in Renaissance Faire and it seems to attract people who are into that.

Those pictures are creepy! It looks like a baby's foot in the ear. I haven't seen anything like that around here, so I didn't know that existed. I don't like gauges either. I guess I am old and not up to date on the trends! But not my body, so it doesn't matter what I think!

In my area, dreads are the thing. Toddlers with dreads, soccer moms with dreads. The organic vegan gluten free market is full of subarus and dreads.

That star one is kind of cool.
I don't like gauges. There will be a point where your ear lobe won't shrink back up. Guess you always have a place to hang your keys and sunglasses

Gauges creep me out because - when I was a kid I hugged my aunt and she had those big ol 70's hoop earrings. You know, the ones that could double as a bracelet. Well I hugged her and the earring got caught and ripped through her earlobe. Not just ripped out but right through the bottom of it. I felt awful and the openness of gauges just remind me of that.

Lots of odd modifications in Los Angeles, but the ones I find most disturbing are the botched lip jobs.

It looks like the guy in the first/ear-baby-toes picture used to have gauges in... Those are almost impossible to stitch closed without leaving obvious scars, and his lobes (what's left), are all scarred...

Gauges give me the heebie-jeebies too. One of the happiest days of my life was when my dd told me that she decided NOT to gauge her ears after saying she was going to for months. I begged her not to, her Dad asked her not to...it was my now dh, who was then my fiance, who convinced her it was a bad idea.

I'd be curious to hear where you live that you're seeing these...I haven't noticed any around here but I don't go out much. (I'm north of Boston, near the NH border)

I'm a weirdo so I think those look way cool! Probably not something I'd do but hmm...maybe. I don't like gauges. I do love and have several tattoos and now that I'm retired have plans for more. I've always wanted to mod my ears into pixie ears because I think they're adorable. Probably won't do that either, lol. I came thisclose to dreading my hair last winter but chickened out because it's taken me forever to grow it this long. Not sure why I like all that stuff on others but chicken out when it comes to me getting it. Normally I totally embrace my weirdness.

Gauges make me nauseous. The first time I saw one, I actually got dizzy. And I'm the person who once sewed up someone on a lengthy hiking trip because it would takes us days to hike back out and the wound needed to closed (and cleaned). I did all that without flinching or having any reaction, but gauges? OMG
I see modifications more when I go into the nearby city on young people. Although one day recently, I started to count the number of people I was seeing with those bull nose rings and most of them were people over the age of 40 who, IMO, were trying desperately to look cool. I think it's the red convertible of that generation.

I can't help it...I shudder a little when I see them. And as for dreads. Maybe I don't understand how it works? I just don't see how it can be clean/fresh smelling. Aren't they just basically long knots of hair? I live in the South and I'm greasy. If I go more than 48 hours without a shampoo, I can't stand the smell of my hair. I feel the need to google this now...

The star actually doesn't look too bad but I'm not getting the point of making your ear look like a baby foot is growing out of it. It's not something I've seen in real life and I'm hoping not to, like ever!

Not a lot around here really.
But I SWEAR I was in a Michaels once, and the cashier had elf ears. Totally pointed like Lord of the Rings style.

I feel the need to google this now... I have issues with dreads. I know it. I own it. It's because I once stood on line for a long time behind a woman with dreads and they were sooooo dirty, greasy, and nasty looking. Plus it was standing outside on a sidewalk August in NYC and the heat? Amazing. And they SMELLED. At one point, I let a gap develop between us because I couldn't take the smell any more (or looking at the various pieces of dirt, dust, and whatnot stuck in her hair) and the person behind me gave me grief, so I told him to get in front of me. He stood there for about 60 seconds, then silently moved behind me again mouthing, "OHMYGOD" as he walked past me. So now whenever I see them, I have an expectation based on that person. Fair or not, it's there. I remember seeing an interview with American Idol's Crystal Bowerstox when she cut off her dreads and the interviewer asked if she'd donated her hair to Locks of Love. She said no, because dreads were too dirty and damaged to use for Locks of Love.

Not any that I have noticed in my area. But this is the boonies so it may take some time to show up here.
ETA- Piercings and tats are popular here but mainly with 40+ women.

When I was in school, I would wear those big heavy earrings from The Limited. My earlobe seemed to stretch down with them. A friend told me that hers ripped through her ear (ok, not exactly, but I can't remember how she described it) and she had to have plastic surgery to repair it. She said her insurance didn't pay and it was expensive. I stopped wearing heavy earrings after that. I don't wear any earrings now because they just don't look right anymore due to the damage caused by the heavy earrings (and I didn't have it ripped through, just stretched).

I've never noticed any implants like that, but they probably are worn by those around me. I'm just not the most observant person on Earth.
Gauges are not attractive, in my opinion, so I choose not to wear them.
I tend toward more conservative dress & appearance, so I am not very into tattoos, piercings (other then one in each earlobe), and different modifications.
I guess I'm a fuddy duddy and not "with it."
