There have been 2 women who have popped up in the "People You May Know" section on Facebook recently, and it kind of spun me out a bit at first.
1. A woman who is the mother of a boy who has filled in for my son's basketball team a couple of times. I have only met her once.
2. A woman who is a member of the social club at my work. But she doesn't work with me, she left before I started there and I have never actually met her.
After thinking about it I guess that Facebook somehow accesses your contact list on your mobile (cell) phone - would that be it? Even though I don't really know either of these women I have their numbers stored in my phone (I am the team manager of the basketball team and I manage the bookings for beach house owned by the social club, so I have spoken to both of them on the phone before.) We don't have any mutual friends either, so that can't be it.
It's weird and just a touch Big Brother-ish don't you think?

I had the mother of a student I taught 7 years ago pop up. We do, coincidentally, have a friend in common – someone I never would have known she was also friends with. But that friend in common has like 1000 Facebook friends, and nobody else from his list randomly pops up as a suggested friend for me. I do not have her as a contact on my phone or in my email, and I have not had contact with her in probably over five years. Weird.

Definitely email/contact based. I freaked out about 6 years ago when Facebook suggested I may want to friend one of DH's former colleagues; DH isn't even on Facebook! I was completely confused how FB linked the colleague and I, when the only person we have in common is DH.. and then I remembered I emailed her once to invite her to a party.

Also weird: I saw a comment from a CRAZY former parent of mine pop up on somebody else's feed. So, out of curiosity, I clicked on his profile. The next day, I got a friend request from him. Did he know I looked at his profile? I did not comment on that same post... So unless he was just randomly going through my friend's friends list, how would he have found me? I did not except his request!

Facebook knows everything about you. They scan information that is stored in your computer and everything online that is publicly accessible. The ads and friend suggestions freak me out sometimes. I bought a suit at a store using my debit card for DS recently and within hours I had suit advertising on Facebook. WTH?

Badly in my experience. It suggested somebody with my sister in law's name but the person wasn't her. My sister in law doesn't have Facebook and I hardly ever post anything so maybe it was when I let it have access to my yahoo mail contacts? Very weird and a little creepy.

After I posted this thread I went and had another look at the "People You May Know" and there were several people on there with the same name as people I know, but are definitely not them. I wonder if this is a relatively new thing as I have not noticed it before the last couple of weeks. I've had the same phone for years so it can't be that.

I freaked out the other day too when the ex-husband of a RL friend (not a FB friend) came up in my people you may know. I've only met him once when he was taking his daughter, my daughter and friends out for the day.

I really hate all those 'people you may know' suggestions on FB and other social media sites. If I wanted to add more people I'd do it and I agree a lot of the suggestions are off

I always thought they were friends of friends. I imagine now I will have to pay closer attention.

It sends you people who have also visited websites you've visited. I used to get a ton of Girl Scout leaders . Once I was looking up things about a relative on a catholic website I got a bunch of nuns I may know for a few months. I'll bet half the people I may know are peas. ( who are all making fun of me as I am my dog on FB lol )
It also relates to your email somehow. That one I haven't figured out.

I have work related contacts come up all the time. I've determined that it's because I have their numbers in my cellphone.

I want to know why it suggests people that I have one mutual friend with all the time, but not people with several mutual friends.

I have a FB account for business reasons. Because I do not want it "mining" my personal info, I registered with an email account used only for online orders. I use a browser that is used only for FB. It is a bit of trouble to do all this, but FB does not have my contact list, nor my email nor know my real browsing history.
I am very amused with the attempts to know my business. This week FB told me I needed to make my account more secure, so please enter my cell phone number. LOL They will get it right after I send my SS to the Nigerian bank who is holding money for me!

I think it could also be people who have looked at your page, a/k/a stalkers.

I think it's more like your affiliations, networks, and groups. If I list I work at Denny's, then it's going to show me all the random people who work at Denny's too. Same home town. Maybe we both liked a page about the same TV show, or have a random mutual friend in common. I think it's more on our patterns/history. People you search for. That kind of thing.
As far as the mutual friend, I think that's exactly why the person showed up. It figures if you know Sally, you may know her friend Jane. Especially if Jane lives nearby and 'likes' surfing, too! KWIM?

Every time that I read one of these Facebook threads I know that I've made the correct decision to never do Facebook. I find the entire concept disturbing and invasive.

I don't use the Facebook app so nothing is connected to my email or phone contacts. I think it's just people I have mutual friends with. I never recognize anyone.

I have a fake facebook account with an empty email account (meaning one I set up just for facebook) and it suggested I friend my exbf wife! It also had suggestions for parents of students, but I am assuming that is because the only think I ever do on facebook is like my school's stuff. I have no idea how it got my ex's wife wife though, I didn't know it was his wife for sure until I clicked on her to see who she was. I won't have a real facebook account ever because of all of the creepy things post about it doing!

It's weird and just a touch Big Brother-ish don't you think? To me its data mining that's going on in the background. Recent "People You May Know" that came up on my wall: a psychologist that I worked with for nearly 5 years from 2001-2005. I never had a personal relationship with her and was not on FB during my time as her patient. a couple whose wedding I was the paid photographer for in 2007. Again, no personal relationship. I was not on FB at that time. I had no more dealings with them after I delivered their photos to them. It makes uncomfortable and I'm seriously considering closing my FB account. What else are they gathering and collecting for their use? I know my having a FB account gives them rights that I likely should never have agreed to but this kind of thing takes it to a step that I find very troubling.

In February I took a month off Facebook. Every single day I would get emails from Facebook telling me I had 99 messages and to log in (I didn't) and it would send me friend suggestions. All the friend suggestions were people I'd looked up, or tried to look up at some point but did not friend. It was rather creepy.

I have a different email for Facebook than I use for anything "real". Basically it's the email I use when I need to give info to a company for a discount, coupon, etc. And Facebook does not have my cell number, nor do I use Facebook from my phone. So without those things to use as help, FB basically offers me friend suggestions of anyone in existence who is a friend of a friend. I get this huge list of people that have one friend in common with me. It's the silliest thing.

Facebook will suggest people you follow or who follow you on Instagram.
