Work dress code has been described as "respectful casual". I will be working in a lab. I will wear a lab coat (almost) all day. No formal dress code other than close-toed shoes. NO hazardous chemicals or really anything potentially harmful. I can't get TOO dressed up because it would look inappropriate and be frowned upon. But, I want to look nice. So far I'm planning on: - some nice blouses - one pair of dress pants - one pair of (nice) jeans - a couple of cardigans I can't find any skirt/shirt combos that look good on my body right now. I loved the dress I wore for my interview, but it's way too dressy for daily work wear. I'd like to find 1 or 2 dresses to wear to work but having a hard time finding anything that is between too casual and too dressy. Ideas? Help?

I would stick with slacks.. why do you need a dress or skirt?
or maybe a t-shirt dress

Check out Target. I bought a couple of cute dresses there this spring.

Those are awesome choices, Ashley!
I like the idea of a t-shirt dress or just a sheath dress. Something still casual, yet comfortable.
and I think a black straight skirt would look great with those tops!

I really like what you found so far.
I have been wearing long skirts and love love love them. So uber comfy. I got mine at Target and Marshalls.
I also like short skirts with leggings (not tights!) and boots.
I have no dresses. But whenever I am in Target, which is often, I see some really cute ones there that make me want to at least try them on. So I agree, Target.

I love everything you've chosen so far especially the yellow cardigan, I think I might need one of those.

I've actually been looking at sheath dresses -- that was the style I wore to my interview and it turns out to be very flattering on my very curvy body. But, I also feel like it's almost too flattering (haha). Maybe if I keep looking for the right style I can dress down with the right kind of shoes (or boots??) and a cardigan or something, I won't feel like I'm over dressed. I found two Banana Republic pencil skirts at Value Village here but didn't buy them as I have a hard time finding shirts that pair well with skirts; I have an extremely high waist and very curvy hips and still have a lot of tummy flab, plus I'm really short, so I often end up looking either pregnant or.. well.. it's just a hard look for me to get right.

Lisa I love short skirts or shirt dresses with leggings and boots. What kind of shirt do you wear with long skirts? Are you tall/short/average height? I'm short (5 ft 2) and very curvy and still overweight, so I have a hard time finding long skirts that don't make me look stupidly proportioned.

I love the blue top with the peter pan collar. That is one that draws my attention every time I am on modcloth.
I have found a couple of cute dresses that are casual but look nice at Lands End over the years. They tend to hold up really well too.

Don't really have any advice on skirts and dresses, but wanted to say I LOVE the tops you picked.

I was going to suggest Lands End, too. I wore the fit and flare dress with a cream top, navy shirt and striped waist to DS's'so graduation and got a lot of compliments on it. But there are sheath dresses there, too. They even have petites, which fit me the best. (I'm 5' 2" as well.)

love what you have picked out. My thought process is if it is a closed toe shoe environment I would keep myself as covered as possible. Never know what is going to spill in a lab and you may not want skin contact. It's not like you have to have everything the day you start, you have an excellent start to a great work wardrobe.

I worked in a hospital lab for many years in a few different hospitals:locations. You may like dresses, but they're really not appropriate or fitting to the dress code and you really should wear pants/dress pants. And none of those capris or short pants that you posted earlier. The point is that you should be covered.
I found dansko clogs to be the most comfortable as well for the lab.

Sorry, this doesn't apply to my work place. Dresses (I didn't post any capris but if I did, they would be fine) and knee-length skirts and shorts are fine.

Look at Boden's clearance right now. All of the summer stuff is on sale. I got some super cute things in the past few weeks. The Pretty Gathered Tunic in forget-me-not over their navy Capri leggings got so many compliments.

My son's girlfriend works in a lab. She came here from work yesterday and she had on flat shoes (docksiders) a nice pair of slacks, a long sleeve sweater which she changed out if right away because she was too warm. She also wears a lab coat but I guess it is kept pretty cool. You might want to wait before buying too much.
Good luck with the new job!
