My son's girlfriend works in a lab. She came here from work yesterday and she had on flat shoes (docksiders) a nice pair of slacks, a long sleeve sweater which she changed out if right away because she was too warm. She also wears a lab coat but I guess it is kept pretty cool. You might want to wait before buying too much. Good luck with the new job! Unfortunately I don't have ANY clothing to wear now, and once I start will have very little time to shop. I know someone who works there -- we worked together at my previous position -- and I've asked her about the dress code and environment. She said it was identical to our previous work place, so I feel pretty comfortable choosing the appropriate type of clothing, just having a hard time finding stuff I like that suits my current body!

Look at Boden's clearance right now. All of the summer stuff is on sale. I got some super cute things in the past few weeks. The Pretty Gathered Tunic in forget-me-not over their navy Capri leggings got so many compliments. So funny! I was just looking at that tunic! It fit so well I ordered it in black, too!

I was just on the Ricki's website and they have some cute fit and flair dresses that would work with your colour palette. link. And they're on sale! I've never heard of this store. Their dresses are darling! Are they usually true to size? Their shirt dresses would be a perfect caual choice.

I really like what you found so far. I have been wearing long skirts and love love love them. So uber comfy. I got mine at Target and Marshalls. I also like short skirts with leggings (not tights!) and boots. I have no dresses. But whenever I am in Target, which is often, I see some really cute ones there that make me want to at least try them on. So I agree, Target. Lisa I love short skirts or shirt dresses with leggings and boots. What kind of shirt do you wear with long skirts? Are you tall/short/average height? I'm short (5 ft 2) and very curvy and still overweight, so I have a hard time finding long skirts that don't make me look stupidly proportioned. I'm 5'3" so pretty short as well. A size 10 or 12 and quite curvy, too. Usually the skirts are medium and not numerical sizes. For me, I find that the best shirts with these skirts are just t-shirts layered with tanks. Also usually bought at Target. For example, I have a long black skirt. I layer any color T with a grey or white tank. Or layer the neutral T with the colored tank. I wear these with jeans and capris all the time, too. Then, I use the same color jewelry as the splash of color or sometimes even just grey or black jewelry. And I have flip flops in nearly every color because they are like $2 to $3 here, and you wear them for most of the year. But even if I couldn't wear flip flops, I would opt for ballet flats for a bit of a dressier look. I make sure to roll up the waist so the skirt isn't too long and dragging. I think that helps with the frumpy feeling that a long skirt sometimes has. I also think the yellow sweater above or something similarly fitted would look great with a grey or black long skirt. Disclaimer: I am far from a fashionista. I wear what I like and am usually comfortable. But I do try to avoid looking frumpy whenever possible. Lol. Lisa

I agree with waiting to buy more. See what others are wearing and what is actually comfortable in that environment.
Make time to shop after. A couple of hours and you'll be good to go.

Only two bottoms? How often are you going to wash/dry clean? Or, do you already have enough bottoms for a workweek?

I would suggest a good black pair of pants and maybe blue or khaki. I tend to wear black or blue pants and then have lots of tops that go with them.
Because I am in and out of my Chem lab I always wear pants and close-toed shoes.
What kind of lab will you be working in?

Thanks, ~summer~. I'll check them out. I don't really wear black... I'm pale and I've got light-coloured cats. I do have some pants from the Gap in a shopping cart. I wouldn't mind spending that much on a good pair of pants if they really were perfect, but I'm still losing weight so going to wait to invest.

Ashley you should try Stitch fix
you really get a good variety of clothes....and worst case scenario you spend $20 to get to try on a bunch of clothes in the comfort of your home. My first order I kept all 5 pieces...

I've thought about it, but I live in Canada and although I have a mailbox in the US, there's no way I could make the 3 day return time.

So, I would just double check that jeans are part of a "respectful casual" dress code. Personally, I would never consider jeans part of any dress code unless "jeans okay" expressly followed the dress code. And even then I'd still wear slacks.
I'm not sure how you feel about shopping at WalMart, but I have some pants in a brand called George that fit really well and they hold up well, too. Less than $20 a pair; I think if you wear non-plus sizes, they're around $10.
As far as how the shirts look, have you tried things on with your lab coat? (Cuz who cares about your tummy flab if you've got the lab coat covering it most of the day.)
Good luck! Shopping for clothes can be really frustrating when you are in "I need to find" mode instead of just browsing!

I've been in this lab and worked in one very similar -- most people wear jeans, or khakis, lots of scrubby looking students around in old t-shirts and stuff. Anyone wearing dress pants would actually be quite rare. I'll check out Walmart-- have no problem shopping there, but haven't in a while because everything was shrinking and getting shorter.

I love that first top. Where did you find that one?
I think the things you have chosen are fine. The term dress code has changed over the years. When I first worked it meant dresses or skirts, stockings and heels. Actually suits were preferred. I am sooooo glad that has changed!!

Are you sure you can wear dresses and skirts? I work for a university and we just switched over to a policy of no visible skin below the waist BEFORE donning PPE. So, that means no skirts, shorts, or even flats with skinny jeans. We all hate it.

I have these skirts that I love. If I wasn't on my phone I would show you a picture, but hopefully my explanation will suffice.
I know JC Penney has some right now in their ANA brand.
They are cotton knit, like a shirt. The waistband fold over like yoga pants. A-line and oh so soft.

Target, TJ Maxx, and Marshalls are my go-to for casual dresses (which I wear every day for work - I think pants are uncomfortable). Sometimes I can find things at old navy as well, but their sizes are all over the place so sometimes things fit and other times they don't fit at all.
ETA: I will admit, I wear dresses also because I am lazy and I don't like skirts + shirts because it means more things to wash, fold hang, and more things to iron.

I'm in the same position myself, having to look for work clothes. After 4 years as a student I need some new grown up clothes I loved the clothes you posted so much that I had to swing by Mod Cloth and make a puchase. I found a cute cardigan and a nice blouse, but I think I need to clean out my closet and plan a bit before I buy more clothes.
