OMG--my ds and his friends play this song over and over. Mix that with them playing Billy Joel, it's making me nutso.
I didn't like either the first time around, don't wanna hear it now.
Is there a resurgance of Neil Diamond songs in your neck of the woods?

It is popular at the karaoke bar I go to. I was raised on Neil Young. We watch The Last Waltz every thanksgiving and we always fast forward through Neil Diamond's song. I think we wore out the tape before the DVD version came along.

That one is pretty commonly played at baseball tournaments/games- when DS played in myrtle beach 5 years ago as a 12 year old, our boys would belt it out whenever it came on. That song brings back treasured memories of great times for us. Pretty sure ds still has it on his iPod.

It's the one song by Neil Diamind that I know! It is popular around here in that it's played a lot if there's music at a party - it's the kind of song that gets people on the dance floor or singing along.

It's big with Red Sox fans. My ds said, "I dare you to walk thru Boston and dis' that song!" LOL My dh was telling me it's big at sporting events; I guess because people know the words. Have to confess Neil Diamond was the first concert I ever saw. My mom and dad made me go. Maybe I've been traumatized by that.

I asked my DS )14) and he had no clue what song it was. So maybe a regional thing?

It's popular tlat the minor league hockey games here.
I have a funny story about Neil. A group of us go off to scrapbook once or twice a year. There is a group of ladies in their 60s that love Neil. So they were playing a CD one day while we were scrapping. My friend, who can be self centered, was going on and on about how horrible it was. She couldn't believe that they liked that. And she wasn't being very quiet or subtle about her complaints. So this other friend of hers said, "I have some CDs in the car. I'll go get some."
And that friend put in the slowest, most mournful gospel music on. And we had to listen to that until it finished. It really was not music you wanted to scrapbook with.
A little while later, when the gospel music owner left the room, I asked my friend if that was better than Neil. And she proceeded to go on and on about how horrible it was. And Neil was much better. The Neil friends were quietly smiling about the whole thing.
I still warn my friend not to complain about the music. It can always be much worse than Neil.

At least my kid likes other stuff I can listen to; i.e., Def Leppard, Boston, Van Halen, etc. At least they got over their Rick Astley obsession, lol.

It's big with Red Sox fans. That's what I was going to say. Neil Diamond came to Fenway and sang it during the seventh inning stretch a couple of years ago, after the marathon bombings, I think. I Googled it once out of curiosity and it seems it started with other ball teams and the Red Sox adopted it.

Oh, and I had a friend that was absolutely obsessed/in love with Barry Manilow. She had to see him every.single.time he came here in concert, only played his music in her car, etc. It's funny to me because there's a lot of great classic music out there, just weird to have ds and his friends belting out Neil Diamond and Billy Joel.

I was very popular when we lived in Boton (moved away 4 years ago.) After all, Neil Diamond says he was inspired by Caroline Kennedy when we wrote the song. It's played at Fenway park during the 8th inning and Neil Diamond donated the proceeds from the song after the Boston Bombing.
My kids were late elementary school/middle school when we lived there. It was played at all the dances and EVERY kid knew EVERY word and the entire room would sing along when the song was played. It was pretty cool.

It's big with Red Sox fans. Favorite memory from our trip to Boston: it was Union Day or something at Fenway Park and we found ourselves in the cheap seats, surrounded by drunk teamsters waving signs and singing Sweet Caroline at the top of their lungs during the 7th inning stretch.

Ever since that wedding movie came out, where they all sang along to "Sweet Caroline," I couldn't listen to it anymore. It was a decent hit in the 60's (early 70's? can't remember), but they messed up the lyrics and it annoys me. I've never heard Billy's songs redone. He's our LI boy, and I know I've said it a million times, but when I was young, I remember my grandparents being annoyed at hearing "that Billy!" playing with his band in his garage down the block. Pretty cool.

So good, so good, so good. I just saw an episode of Big Bang Theory this week that had Amy and I think Howard singing Sweet Caroline in the car. Bit of a thread jack - Dh is a Neil Diamond fan and he convinced me to go to a concert this past spring (I had dragged him to Pearl Jam, Third Eye Blind, Weezer and a few others that weren't to his taste so I kind of owed him at least one ). Anyway, I did know some of the songs of course as I am over 50 so I wasn't completely dreading it but I was quite pleasantly surprised at how much fun I had. The audience was a complete mixed bag - young, old and everything in between.

I think a bunch of sports teams (our local university included) play it. I thought it originally started in Boston, but other cities liked it and used it too.

They play it at NHL games too.
Sweet Caroline. BUM BUM BUM...
They also play the Ramones. I hate the Ramones. Can't stand them. Unfortunately, they also play them at my beer league games. Hate them there too.

Like Neil diamond, but sweet Caroline is creepy. Very creepy Why? Do I not know something? He has said that it was inspired by Caroline Kennedy. She was about 9 at the time it was written. It didn't creep me out until a friend pointed out that the lines about "touching hands, touching me, touching you" was a little creepy in that context.
