Apart from the surgery and corsets/spanx I do all of those things, and not because I feel I have to, but at 45 I do things because I want to. Honestly I think most people do/wear those things because it's something they want to do.

I really hate the judging that goes on in these threads. I don't think dyeing your hair is stupid. That's akin to me asking you why you just gave up and threw in the towel.

Oooooooooooooooooh, PANTY HOSE!!!!!!! People KNOW I don't have THAT smooth, silky, elastic skin. LOLOL I HATE panty hose and will NOT bow down to the fashionistas and wear them because they have come back into fashion. You can't make me!!! They are itchy...make my skin crawl. I hate feeling like I have to pull them up all day. I also can't wear them with sandles/flip flops...because that's ANOTHER faux pas. LOL Now, I MIGHT wear tights...just so I can wear aforementioned awesome boots. Well, I can't tell you how happy I am that they're back. My shoes feel so much better when I'm wearing hose. I just started a new job and I decided that I'm going to wear pantihose with skirts and knee-highs or trouser socks with pants. I will never again suffer with sweaty feet sticking to the insoles of my pumps and causing blisters. I have tried nearly every brand of those "no-show" socks and I can't stand them. They always slip off my heel and bunch up under my arches. Plus, the edges show around the edges of my shoes. I can't stand them.

If it floats your boat and makes you happy, your body. I am not to into preening behaviors. I hardly ever shave my legs because I always wear pants or long jeans. If I wear shorts for the sake of humanity I will shave. In my almost 60 years of life I have never used a hair dryer, hair products like gel or colored my hair, to close to the brain. I have an irrational fear that hair color chemicals could be absorbed and damage what is left of my brain.

I don't wear heels I don't wax and I rarely use a hair dryer, curling iron or any hair products (I like my natural hair color...)
I also don't polish my nails very often but I have weird toes that rub on eachother so the polish rubs off and I tend to pick at my finger nails if they have polish...

How about the act of cutting off toes to fit into narrower shoes?

How about the act of cutting off toes to fit into narrower shoes? If I was ever able to afford plastic surgery or desired to, I'd totally get my baby toe and part of my foot shaved off so I could wear cute shoes.

Isn't it pretty much a personal image thing, Ashley? Kind of along the lines of you liking to wear dresses. We as individuals get to present ourselves as we wish. Now I personally think straight hair looks good on practically nobody. All those popular shaggy haircuts with ends sticking out look horrible to me, so I don't wear them. But obviously they are popular and worn by women who do feel their look is improved by such a haircut. Maybe partially, but I think you'll find it a very small proportion of the population who wants jiggly fat rolls or hairy legs to be part of their personal image. On the other hand, some of us have jiggly fat rolls (or big butts, or stomachs that stick out, or flabby arms, or neck wrinkles, or whatever, and that's just a fact of life. Me, I have a big butt. While I didn't set out to create a big butt for my personal style image, I have had a big butt for nearly 40 years and whether I like it or not, it is part of my personal external image. I also have some gray hair, I have a large birthmark on my left leg, I have hair that isn't wavy or straight but somewhere in between, I have sparse and pale eyebrows, and those are just facts. They are neither good nor bad, they just are what they are. So whether I want all these things to be part of my personal image or not, they are, and that's just what it is.

And while I was typing, I guess I got my answer. I'm not like pea-livid or anything. But, as I said, it just rubbed me the wrong way. I appreciate your statement that it was meant to be light-hearted though. Here's the problem: for people who do any of the things listed, it doesn't sound light-hearted. It sounds mean and judgemental. It's not coming across as a "I wonder why..." question. It's coming across as a "let's make fun of..." statement. If you say, "I wonder when body hair is considered unattractive?", it comes across as a real question of curiosity. When you say, "Shaving, waxing, etc. is dumb. Why is body hair considered unattractive?", then you are (unintentionally) calling people who shave, wax, etc. dumb. See the difference? ITA. This came across as judgemental. I appreciate you said you weren't, but really, you are. My hair has dulled over the years and I dye it back to its original color. I LOVE it. It makes me happy. If you said "Let's name some of the things women do in the name of fashion" it would sound better than including the adjective "dumb." It may only be dumb in your book. Not in mine. For me - I hate how people use the word "dumb" to describe something THEY don't agree with.

First of all, I rock my skinny jeans. And I wear heals on occasion. I'm 41 am i supposed to walk around in a mumu? I also hate feeling hairy.
The only thing I can think of is people who don't wear what they want to wear due to fashion rules. Hopefully by the time we are in our 40s and 50s we know what looks good on us and what suits our lifestyle and that's all we should care about. Screw "should".

What I find amusing is the dyeing you hair grey trend with the younger ladies.
Wait a few decades and you will have plenty of grey naturally and try to cover it up! LOL!

Ummmm...I don' wear heels because they are painful (no matter what the heel) and they are REALLY REALLY REALLY bad for your feet and joints (knees, feet and hips and ankles). I don't do it if it doesn't make me feel good. I really don't care what the fashions are or aren't. Waxing and shaving: I do it because I feel gross if I don't, and would have a mustache and eyebrows that rivaled Graucho Marx's if I didn't. Oh, and because I live in the humidity capital of the U.S.

I don't think it's stupid, if it makes a person feel better about themselves then by all means do it. For me with my short hair, it would require much more money and maintenance than I would be willing to commit to keeping it up and it would always look bad so I just roll with my gray. Heck, I have a hard time just getting in for a decent haircut every 2-3 months!

I love the look of well-manicured fake nails. I cringe at the repeatedly filled, 5mm or more thick things I see on otherwise elegant women. Some of them have obvious crud at the sides from the product or coloured polish from a previous manicure showing on the edges. I just don't get it at all.

I didn't mean to come across as judgmental, because I really didn't men for it to be that way at all. I guess I started this thread because I was wondering why being hairless on your body, why wearing shoes that put your feet at an unnatural angle, why changing your body into a form that it isn't naturally, is considered the society standard. I didn't mean to slam anyone. I'm sorry.

Why is wearing skinny jeans stupid or dumb? Wearing one so tight it lands you in the ER? Sure. But regular skinny jeans? They fit my body type so well I'd be studpid not to wear them

I get what the OP meant. It is funny what society has told us is beautiful. Based on current beauty standards, most of us are some combination of plucked, shaved, waxed, exfoliated, using skin care products, wearing makeup that can be natural or a 15 product routine, jewelry, manicured, pedicured, tanned or fake tanned, wearing deodorant, shampooed, conditioned, using a half dozen hair products, straightening or curling, using dye or getting highlights. That is a long list of things without even touching on fashion or weight. My husband has like 3 products-shampoo, soap, deodorant. Where did that long list of what it takes to be female come from? Even if I said I do it for myself, whatever, how come when I stay home I skip about 75% of those steps? Because I do a lot of things to be socially acceptable, we all do and society has created entire industries around women needing to do a lot of things to fit in to our society. Just glad foot binding and corsets are off the list these days, lol.

It's like we're all so brainwashed to believe we have to do all this crap to be feminine that we can't even see the humor in the fact that we, for example, VOLUNTARILY squeeze ourselves into nylon compression garments, or pay a stranger to pull out our pubes out by the roots.

Lainey's post in this thread made me want to start this thread. So, lets name dumb things women do in the name of fashion. And, if you know why we do these things, or why we started to, chime in please. Things that I can think of: Wearing skinny jeans Wearing high heeled shoes Shaving, waxing, epilating, bleaching (body hair), threading - all in the name of getting rid of hair that grows on us naturally. Why is hair considered so unattractive? Corsets. Spanx. Girdles. Liposuction. Vanity tummy tucks. Breast enlargement. Brazilian butt lifts. Lip plumping surgery. Dying gray hair. Why do so many in our culture feel that having gray hair is shameful? Or that even aging is bad. We can't stay twenty forever. It's kind of silly to try to. Makeup

not wear long hair if they want to... Isn't that the truth! My mom, who has never been one to say much about what I wear or how I wear it has been harping lately on the fact that my hair is too long. Apparently, according to her, I am getting to an age that I should be considering wearing it much shorter than it is. And what makes this is even weirder is that she and I had a conversation recently about 'dressing your age' and her stance was that if you like it, you should wear it regardless of your age. So the hair thing confuses me. I told her to MYOB. My mother is the same way! If she could she would probably take to me to her hairdresser and get my hair chopped off. When she was in her mid 50's she cut her beautiful hair really short, like a boy cut. It's been like this for years now, she's almost 72. It's like at some arbitrary age she decided I'm old now, so I have to get an old lady haircut.

I admit to being one to give up and throw in the towel. Why? The wind made me do it. I coloured my hair for thirty years. And the one thing I could count on was as soon as I had some regrowth it would get windy and remain windy until I coloured again. When I quit colouring I was totally white haired so guess how easy it was to notice that regrowth.

That's fine, but my point was it's rude to call it "dumb" to dye your hair, just as rude as if I had asked why you just gave up. Judgmental. I have tons of gray mixed in with my mousy brown and it's not flattering at all. I'll continue to color it for a long time to come, not to try and fool anyone about my age as was mentioned earlier, but because I like my hair blonde. I also will never color it myself again because I find the older a woman gets, the harder it is to make box blonde look good instead of harsh or brassy.

Wow, I am almost 50 and I dye my hair with box blonde. I think it looks good, but thank you for telling me that I look old and harsh and brassy. I am really insulted.
......NOT!!

You're all beautiful. No matter what you choose or don't choose to do in the name of beauty.
Didn't we just have a thread about how part of the joy of being over 40 is not caring so much what others think? Being more comfortable with who we are? I'd love to see us practice more of that.

I think, FOR ME, the make a professional outfit more polished and finished. I like a nice, barely there nude shade. I don't like the kind that have so much lycra that you can't breath, but the non-binding kind are nice. (So says the woman in a t-shirt, yoga pants, pony tail, and no make up.)

I like panty hose too, mostly because the shoe issue, and I have scars on my legs from surgery, being in the Army, hiking, etc so they are beat up looking.
I too am rocking the "too long for a woman of Your Age" hair. I'm not sure what that age is exactly, but apparently I'm past it. Who knew hairstyles had an expiration date! I wouldn't call mine a style exactly though- all one length. It's really easy, I can put it up nicely in 5 minutes, while when it's short I had to dry it, and style it, and product, and that is just too much darn work. I fully intend for it to be long, gray hair some day when I am sick of coloring it, but not yet- coloring is a pain but I love the way it looks. Like me, but better!
I will admit I don't get high heels or narrow shoes that deform your feet after years of wear. Every woman in my family has terrible bunions from ridiculous shoes, except me. Because I wear wide comfy shoes and mostly no shoes since I don't wear shoes in the house. If you saw some of my relatives feet, you too would wonder why they have squeezed them for so many years into "cute" shoes and ended up with such horrors. And yes, I've heard of the surgery to remove a little toes because a relative is considering it since she has to have bunion surgery, again. If you are prone to bunions, why in the world would you do that to your poor feet? You only get one set! I don't get it.
