Lainey's post in this thread made me want to start this thread. So, lets name dumb things women do in the name of fashion. And, if you know why we do these things, or why we started to, chime in please. Things that I can think of: Wearing skinny jeans Wearing high heeled shoes Shaving, waxing, epilating, bleaching (body hair), threading - all in the name of getting rid of hair that grows on us naturally. Why is hair considered so unattractive? Corsets. Spanx. Girdles. Liposuction. Vanity tummy tucks. Breast enlargement. Brazilian butt lifts. Lip plumping surgery. Dying gray hair. Why do so many in our culture feel that having gray hair is shameful? Or that even aging is bad. We can't stay twenty forever. It's kind of silly to try to.

not wear long hair if they want to... Isn't that the truth! My mom, who has never been one to say much about what I wear or how I wear it has been harping lately on the fact that my hair is too long. Apparently, according to her, I am getting to an age that I should be considering wearing it much shorter than it is. And what makes this is even weirder is that she and I had a conversation recently about 'dressing your age' and her stance was that if you like it, you should wear it regardless of your age. So the hair thing confuses me. I told her to MYOB.

I think this is exactly why most women do the things you listed. Because we feel younger and more attractive when we do. And all of society tells us we "should".

Using Ceruse to appear fair skinned Wearing lice riddled wigs Tight corsets that caused permanent damage I've done a few stupid things for fashion in my time but I draw the line at any of those I'm not sure why we or any women through history have followed fashion when it's quite clearly stupid other than a sense of fitting in and being accepted by society.

I don't own any skinny jeans, and I hardly ever wear heels, but I do color my hair regularly. I am 36 and started going gray early (thanks mom!)... I am NOT ready for that yet!
Aside from that, I wear what makes me feel good and do what makes me feel pretty. To each their own... "Dumb" or not.
ETA: I know this thread is all in good fun... I hope I don't come off as hand-slappy!

I am SO not a girly girl. So I'll say wear heels, makeup everyday, have everything waxed and I mean *everything*, changing out purses constantly, wear jewelry.... I am not opposed to the spandex idea. It seriously gives me anxiety when "putting myself together"; especially the accessorizing part. I totally understand this makes other women happy, but I'm not one of them! I don't feel any prettier or better about myself when I make a bigger effort. ETA: I'm a year older than Woobster and I'm not ready to show the gray yet either. So, maybe I am a little vain.

I wear skinny jeans, BUT, I wear ones that fit my body. Why? So I can wear awesome boots! I shave my legs. Why? Because I was taught that that is what girls do. I do not wax. Why? Because I will not put myself through the pain just for the heck of it, especially since no one sees most of it. I do not wear high heels, because they are not comfortable, and at 5' 1", NO ONE is going to look at me and think they make look skinnier or taller LOL I will not have liposuction because fat can always come back. I will not get bigger boobs, because mine are triple D's. LOL Although, I MIGHT get a reduction for the sake of my back, NOT vanity.

And I can completely understand needing a reduction. I hope every one realizes I meant this thread to be light-hearted. I'm not slamming anyone for choosing to wax, dye, or anything. And I really am curious as to what point in history society said "Eww ____ is gross! Let's do this instead!"

I think the last time I wore heals was at my wedding 16 years ago. I also to not color my hair and have yet to see a grey one. The extent of my girly stuff is shaving, showering with pretty smelling things, minimal makeup and sometimes nails painted.

Honestly, I have EARNED every gray hair on my head so I'm keeping them as a badge of honor, LOL. It's better than being bald and that could definitely be the alternative with how much my hair has thinned over the years. All makeup, even the hypoallergenic kind, makes my eyes itch something fierce so I avoid it. I also don't understand manicures and pedicures. I keep my my nails and toenails very clean and neatly trimmed. They naturally look like I have a French manicure so I don't see the point in putting polish on them (plus it drives me crazy having anything on them and I just end up picking/peeling it off). I have friends who spend a crazy amount of money on their nails. Whatever floats their boat I guess, but I really don't understand it.

You know there's no law you have to do any of those "dumb things" if you don't want to. And perhaps you are genuinely curious about the origins of certain fashion trends. But for some reason, your post is just rubbing me the wrong way. It feels slightly insulting.

This is just my opinion on what I do. I see nothing wrong with dying hair. I like the hair color I have always had (brown) and when it starts to grey, I want to color it to keep the color I have always had. I see nothing wrong with coloring hair or letting it grey. Whatever works for you is what I say.
I also shave my legs/underarms every other day. Because I can't stand the hair on my legs or underarms. Not to impress anyone but me. I also love nail polish and makeup (wish I just had more time in the morning) and fixing my hair. Not because someone makes me, I just like to. And I have a nail polish addiction! My husband shaves his face, trims his nails gets hair cuts more than I do, etc. because he feels better that way. Everyone should do what makes them happy.
I don't wear high heels because I can't walk in them! My teen daughters love their heels and have been wearing them since they wore the play shoes at 2. My mom joked that my girls could walk in heels better at 2 than I ever could!
But ask my kids, I have no problem going to the store with my capri sweats, snow boots, no makeup or fixed hair in the middle of the winter. I never feel like I am being judged, except by my kids. I see plenty of others dressing the same way. The best was when we say my daughter's "high-fashion" French teacher in the store wearing the same thing! You bet I gave my kids a hard time about teasing me then!

My original statement of
was meant more to mean things that are clearly hazardous to health, like wearing lead based make up to look 'whiter' it wasn't intended to be mean or insulting.

And I really am curious as to what point in history society said "Eww ____ is gross! Let's do this instead!" Apparently women didn't start shaving their legs until around WWII when women started working regularly and wore dresses to work.

I think shaving legs may have started more due to sheer stockings and shorter hem lines. Just visualize mooshed up hair under sheer stockings - not nice in my imagination.
This coming from someone who will go months in the winter without shaving because no one is going to know. Except DH who grows a beard for the winter.

I appreciate your statement that it was meant to be light-hearted though. Here's the problem: for people who do any of the things listed, it doesn't sound light-hearted. It sounds mean and judgemental. It's not coming across as a "I wonder why..." question. It's coming across as a "let's make fun of..." statement. If you say, "I wonder when body hair is considered unattractive?", it comes across as a real question of curiosity. When you say, "Shaving, waxing, etc. is dumb. Why is body hair considered unattractive?", then you are (unintentionally) calling people who shave, wax, etc. dumb. See the difference?

When I read the title I thought the thread was going to be about how women sometimes let 'fashion' stop them from doing or wearing what they want - not wearing a bathing suit or bikini because they don't have a 'beach body'... Or about funny attempts at being trendy that we've tried, like 80's hair...

Well, for myself, I'm very thankful most of those listed thing ARE popular. Hairy legs are gross. So is any other visible body hair. I'm having some 'body work' done soon, and have colored my hair for many years. Why should I have gray hair? Why would I even want to? While I can no longer wear heels, they are beautiful shoes and I wish I still had the balance to wear them. As for 'control' garments, flapping body parts are not attractive. Don't we all want to present ourselves in the best light possible?
Thank goodness for fashion!

Don't we all want to present ourselves in the best light possible? I think the issue is more WHY is all of that unnatural stuff "the best light possible"? Men don't do many, if any, of those things!

Isn't it pretty much a personal image thing, Ashley? Kind of along the lines of you liking to wear dresses. We as individuals get to present ourselves as we wish. Now I personally think straight hair looks good on practically nobody. All those popular shaggy haircuts with ends sticking out look horrible to me, so I don't wear them. But obviously they are popular and worn by women who do feel their look is improved by such a haircut.

I don't think any of that stuff is stupid as long it makes a person happy! Oh how I hate shaving and plucking my eyebrows but I do feel better when it's done. I don't dress or groom for anyone but myself these days. I rarely get out so I don't even see many people, but I like to look however it pleases me, so that's what I do.

I pretty much only wear skinny jeans. Before they were a popular item I would sew the ankles of my jeans to turn them in to skinny jeans.
The thing I think is dumb is wearing sky high stilleto heels. No one will ever convince me that they can be comfortable.

Maybe partially, but I think you'll find it a very small proportion of the population who wants jiggly fat rolls or hairy legs to be part of their personal image.

Oooooooooooooooooh, PANTY HOSE!!!!!!! People KNOW I don't have THAT smooth, silky, elastic skin. LOLOL I HATE panty hose and will NOT bow down to the fashionistas and wear them because they have come back into fashion. You can't make me!!! They are itchy...make my skin crawl. I hate feeling like I have to pull them up all day. I also can't wear them with sandles/flip flops...because that's ANOTHER faux pas. LOL Now, I MIGHT wear tights...just so I can wear aforementioned awesome boots.
