I don't like it when the heat kills my taste buds. I do like a kick, though. My SIL makes salsa from her garden - OMGoodness, it's addictive! It's so hot, I think I can't stand it, but then I want just.one.more.bite... YEEEOW! The freshness and flavor of the veggies - it's to die for. My mom pretends to be afraid of the container sitting in the refrigerator - she's a no-spice gal. When I was pregnant with my first, I craved spicy food constantly. The guy at the sandwich bar at my office got nervous when he saw me coming in with my big belly, asking for extra hot peppers. LOL!

Yes, I enjoy spicy (flavorful) food. Thank goodness DH and I both do. Frequently though, we can't find food spicy enough for us, unless I make it.

My crazy ex husband used to spice everything. It used to drive me up the wall for a number of reasons a ) I didn't enjoy it b ) the kid couldn't eat from his plate because it was too spicy c ) it tasted terrible d ) it used to burn when he used the bathroom
He would buy curry to pour on rice that 100X spicy. He said it was spicy just for the sake of being spicy but he still liked it.

I grew up eating sambal oelek - It's an Indonesian hot spice that is fantastic with rice & meat. I used to have to buy it online but they now sell it at Stop & Shop (our grocery store). Though it is hot, it doesn't burn your mouth and has a great flavor that makes the food taste that much better. The sambel I bought made my eyes water when I opened the jar.

I like a nice little kick to some foods, but not enough that my lips or tongue are burning. I don't enjoy that. I think you should still be able to taste the flavor of the food, and if my lips and tongue are in fire, I can't do that. So, some would say I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to heat. My dh thinks that some of the things I think are tame are too hot, though, so I guess some people are more sensitive to it than others.

I love heat! I have a decent collection of hot sauces, and I grow an assortment of peppers to make my own salsas & other condiments. I'll experiment with just about any other spice, too.

I like spicy food and have a relatively high heat tolerance, but I don't like anything that burns.

Me too. But I only eat food that I like the taste of so I don't need it covered up with spices. Most really spicy food comes from hot countries so in the back of my head I have this thought that they use the spices to cover the fact that the food is already starting to turn bad. But that is just me and I have no proof.

My innards don't cope well with spicy food so it's just not worth it That said, I've never really been a fan of very spicy stuff (my parents were not into spice at all when I was growing up) ...dh still laughs about my reaction when I had a mild korma for the first time!

Yes! The older I get, the hotter I like it....food, that is. My favorite salsa is Habanero. YUM! I don't like it so hot that I can't taste anything, though. My dad does, though! If you don't lose your voice and sweat, it's not hot enough for him. LOL

No. I had heard years ago that the incidence of stomach cancer is higher in Louisiana and I often wondered if there is a correlation.
I don't see why seasoning food until it makes your lips burn is a good thing.

Most really spicy food comes from hot countries so in the back of my head I have this thought that they use the spices to cover the fact that the food is already starting to turn bad. But that is just me and I have no proof. OMG This is why I grew up in a household where the only "spices" were salt and pepper, my dad was taught by his mother that the only purpose of any other spice was to cover up the fact the meat was bad . I love hot and spicy. For a few years we ate Thai food mild for the kids but as they got older started going progressively hotter so that now a mild Pad Thai or curry tastes bland. Heat really can enhance the flavors but I do think to really enjoy and appreciate it you have to build up slowly. DH can take more heat than any of us and adds hot sauce to everything. My eyes might water and I've broken out in a sweat but I've never been in pain eating something hot.

It must be DNA because the man cub likes to spice up his food, too. I look at him funny because my dad doesn't like spicy food, my mom thinks too much ketchup is spicy and I don't eat it either. He really likes to spice up everything and won't eat something that is "too bland" anymore. He has some sort of really spicy Chinese hot sauce in the fridge that he puts on everything.

not so hot that you sweat / tear up, but yes, I do like spicy foods. Spicy enough so you can still taste the flavors, but not hot enough that all you feel is the burn.
I never liked those kinds of foods till I met my BF, who had lived for years in Arizona. (not much spicy food growing up with a Scandinavian background in Illinois, lol!) He likes things spicy enough so he will sweat, but they still have to have LOTS of flavor. Depending on the peppers and the food, there still IS alot of flavor even if it's that spicy. Plus, there's the whole 'endorphin' thing that happens when people eat food that spicy; it's on the order of the 'runner's high' I think-- your brain makes the 'feel-good' chemicals.
ETA this: Spices don't cover up the flavor. They enhance it. growing up, the only seasonings my mom used (german / scandinavian background, remember) were salt and pepper. Now, plain meat & potatoes food like that is so boring to me. Our spice cabinet is full of all sorts of herb / spice mixtures, my BF has at least 5 bottles of hot sauce (different types) open at any given time, and we have 3-5 different kinds of mustards in the fridge all the time.
Spice does not have to equal burn-your-mouth-so-much-you-can't-taste-anything; even the people who like to eat foods hot enough so they sweat can still taste the flavors. They just have a higher tolerance for it than other people.

I told my husband about this thread and he said "what do you mean it doesn't burn your mouth?" I guess after growing up on the stuff, I've gotten immune to the hotness

I'm with you.
I don't like very spicy meals.
It blows me away when I see tv shows with spicy food eating competitions. I don't know how they can stand the heat!

Yes, I love hot, spicy foods.
I have a high tolerance for them though. I have never had heartburn or indigestion in my life. Never had any physical discomfort after eating spicy foods.
What some people find 'hot' or 'spicy' though I don't. I had suicide wings last week when we were out, and didn't find them all that hot at all.
I put mounds of hot pickled peppers on many things, on sandwiches, burgers, hot dogs or sausage, on pasta, pizza, in salads, etc. But hot pickled peppers aren't really very hot on the spice scale.
I find the heat enjoyable and yes, I can still taste other flavours of the food.

I like hot but not insanely so. At an Americanized Thai restaurant, I can handle 5 stars. At an authentic Thai place, I'll top out at three. I can still taste the food and the heat is hot but not painful
I like things spicier now than I did when I was younger. I also didn't like to sip bourbon when I was younger. My tastes have changed with age.

Not at all. Most things labelled "mild" are even too hot for me to enjoy.
