I was watching a show about places in/around Chicago to get the hottest/spiciest foods. Some of these dishes were making peoples' glasses fog up, tears run down their faces, etc.
If I eat something that's hot, I don't taste the food anymore, it's all about the fire in my mouth and figuring out how to put that fire out, lol. It really does ruin the meal for me.
So how about you?

I used to. My favorite treat in my younger years was killer buffalo wings and a couple wine coolers to wash them down with (I'm so old LOL!). Now it seems that I can't tolerate spicy foods like I used to and it makes me sad. But even I don't understand the stuff that's so hot you can only eat a couple bites of it.

I don't bother to clean up before I go to the local pizza & wing place. If I eat even their slightly spicy wings, I will sweat off all my make up. The peppers in the salad at the Olive Garden have the same effect on me. I haven't always been this way. Mustard on a hot dog now makes me reach for a napkin to wipe my face. I like foods with a bit of kick to them, but if I ate something super spicy my hair would probably be wet too.

I used to!! And the same with mustard and salsa. But since my stomach and stones and all that no way hot messes. It makes me sad cause I really like it but only in small amounts.

While I do enjoy a bit of horseradish or spicy mustard as a condiment, I don't enjoy overly hot/spicy food which burns my mouth, lips and tongue and makes me teary, it's not delicious or pleasurable to me.

I love heat if it has flavor but just pure heat? No thanks! I tend to order my food quite a bit spicier than most of my friends.

I grew up eating sambal oelek - It's an Indonesian hot spice that is fantastic with rice & meat. I used to have to buy it online but they now sell it at Stop & Shop (our grocery store). Though it is hot, it doesn't burn your mouth and has a great flavor that makes the food taste that much better.

If it also has good flavor. I'm finding more and more the heat is just for heat. I want it to taste good not just heat to see how much you can stand. ETA akathy exactly my point. Said better. I was probably typing as you were but wandered off (popcorn called my name!) before I hit enter.

So for those that like food as hot as they can make it, do you even taste the food at that point?

The hotter the better. Yup, I can still taste the food. We all taste things differently...that's what makes the world go round.

Same here. I also don't like most Mexican food. I like food with some spice & flavour, just not a lot of heat. I have had too many spicy hot wings at the Anchor Bar.

I love highly seasoned food but I hate heat. Or should I say that I simply can't tolerate heat. It really hurts me.

Food shouldn't hurt. That's my mantra. Yeah, that. I was eating salsa at our favorite Mexican place and ate a bite of a hot chili. I thought it was a tomato. I thought I was going to be sick. I had to ask for some milk to cut the heat.

Yes, I like hot and spicy food, but the dish can't just be hot for hot's sake. I find some Korean dishes like seafood bibimbap to be out of my range. It is all relative though, my brother in law thought I was really tough when I ate an envelope of the Taco Bell fire sauce. It tasted like mild salsa to my palate, so I might be macho to some and wimpy to others.

Love me some hot. There was a chicken soup place in Seoul (the soup is herby, blamed almost) that served sliced raw garlic and hot raw peppers to dip in red pepper paste as an accompaniment. Perfect- eat some bland, rich broth, scarf a few slices of garlic dipped in red pepper paste.
Only downside is raw garlic makes me smell so strongly that as soon as I walked in the door dh would be yelling at me, lol. Apparently I would be surrounded by a garlic fog for hours. Totally worth it.

Me and my dd's are Mexican flunkies, we don't like hot and/or spicy I like mild or medium salsa and pico, but not hot sauce or jalepenos. I only have one star on my Thai food

I do enjoy spicy food but I used to hate it, all I could taste was burning. Then I had these amazing spicy tacos in Mexico that were spicy but flavorful and I got hooked on spice. Once I ate a soup that was so spicy I think the people were playing a joke on us because we were tourists, but it was super delicious so I ate it anyway. Now when I go to a Thai restaurant I can get a 10 spicy and it doesn't even seem that spicy in comparison. I do also enjoy things that are not spicy but it just depends on my mood.

I said on another thread that I am the world's biggest baby. That applies to spicy foods, too. I buy mild of everything, and even then sometimes I'm fanning my mouth after I eat. I'm truly pathetic.

I love spicy food. If it makes my eyes water, it is just about right. When I order hot wings though, I typically go one level under the hottest - wing places tend to make a macho-type point about how insanely hot they can make their hottest option.

As I age, I'm finding I enjoy spicy much more. When I'm not on my phone I'm going to post a spicy mayo recipe we came up with, from my computer. We've been making it frequently - it's killer.

No, I just don't have the palate for hot spicy food. I always buy 'mild' salsa, and sometimes even it is too hot. I do love Mexican food in theory, but not with too hot a sauce. In New Mexico, it's fairly easy because you are always asked "red or green". "Green please".

I remember when I was in my late teens a friend used to order a pizza called "Catastrophe". He would have tears streaming down his face and sweat pouring off his head, but he loved it. I could never understand how he could enjoy something that looked so painful!
I do enjoy a bit of heat in my food but not so much that it makes my body leak fluids! DSO, BIL and FIL like eating the hottest things they can find.
