DH and I are flying round trip to my visit my sister in Largo, FL. We will be leaving the airport near our home in Tennessee and flying on Allegiant Air to the St.Pete-Clearwater Intl. airport. (That is who I booked our flight with.) We got both round trip tickets for $330 total. We are only taking one small carry on bag each with us since we are only staying a few days. We can wash clothes at her condo if we need to. And there is a Dollar Tree minutes from her condo if we need to buy toiletries.
The website states this:
You may travel with one Personal Item not to exceed 7 in. x 15 in. x 16 in. free of charge. Will a small purse be considered a personal item? Are Kindles allowed on flights? I am totally clueless as to what you can bring on a flight.
I am diabetic and use Lantus solo-star insulin pens. Will I be able to take them with me? Is there a list of things you can and can not take on flight? The flight is about 2 hours long and non-stop, for which I am eternally grateful!! I am paranoid about getting lost in a huge airport and missing our flight.
DH has flown before but it was work related and before 9/11 happened. I am scared but excited at the same time. Any tips or things to do or not to do will be so appreciated!!

you can bring a purse...and the kindle and anything not liquid. medical supplies are not in the liquid ban...just have them well labeled. look at TSA website for more information. start chewing gum or swallowing as you leave the gate to pressurize your ears. you will be fine. just get there early as not to rush..

I am paranoid about getting lost in a huge airport and missing our flight. DH has flown before but it was work related and before 9/11 happened. I am scared but excited at the same time. Any tips or things to do or not to do will be so appreciated!! You can bring a carry-on bag that meets the stated dimensions. It must fit under the seat in front of you or in the overhead bins. You can also bring a purse, which doesn't have to be small, but again, it must fit under the seat in front of you. You're probably going to have to remove your shoes, so wear slip-ons, not lace-ups I travel with growth hormone that comes in an injectible pen and it must be kept cold, so I keep it in a cold gel pack for travel. I have had different experiences at different airports. Some have scrutinized it with a fine tooth comb (usually smaller airports) and others wave me through without even checking it. You are allowed to bring small amounts of liquids through security. Gah! I could NOT get the link to work right. Just Google TSA Liquids Rule for complete info. I always bring a bottle of water purchased past the security checkpoint and something to eat, like a small bag of nuts that I packed at home because it's not unusual to get stuck on the runway either during takeoff or landing (or both) for an extended amount of time and I get cranky when I'm hungry. Pee before you get on the plane or ASAP when you first get on the plane. You will have to have your seat belt fastened at the beginning of the flight and you won't be able to get up. Then once you're in the air, the flight attendants start beverage service and their cart will be blocking the aisle for a long time. I always bring a pashmina because sometimes it can get chilly on the plane, and/or you can bunch it up and use it as a pillow. DO NOT recline your seat. It annoys the people sitting behind you. (I kid, but not really)

The St. Pete airport is super tiny and super slow at times. I'm very familiar with flying in and out of it and will post tips on the morning!

Bring your Rx for your diabetes supplies. You need to have that with you at all times. Do not pack in your luggage. Ever. It is too dangerous if you get separated from your luggage. My mom took her Enbrel needles with her to Hawaii (which is international and to Europe etc) and was perfectly fine. Make sure you have your Rx with your name on it.

Your insulin will be fine. My 11 yr old son has flown with Lantus and Humalog pens with no problems. Put them in a clear ziploc baggie and keep them with you & your purse/carry on bag.
Arrive earlier than you think to the airport if you are not familar with it.
Be sure to do the online check in and print your boarding pass before you go to the airport if you can. Some airlines charge $5 or $10 to use thier kiosk or check in with a person if you don't do it ahead of time and Allegiant is one. Dh has used Allegiant several times and I think we got an email 24 hours ahead to check in that stated there was a fee if you didn't print the pass yourself.
A small purse would be the "personal item" size allowed. Dh flew Allegiant last Monday and his personal item was an insulated lunchbag with medication inside.
Relax and enjoy your trip!

Thanks for the help!!! We drove down to Florida a couple weeks ago and it cost almost $300 in gas and put almost 1500 miles on our Tundra. My sister said flying would be quicker and cheaper, so we are giving it a go. I am grateful that my first flight will be a short one. I am somewhat familiar with the airport near us, it is not small but not huge either. Thank you, Dani-Mani, for letting me know about the St. Pete airport being small. I look forward to any tips you have about it.

Yes, PIE is small, no worries, there. IIRC, they still don't have gangways, so you will use the rollaway stairs to get off the plane. Then grab your bags and and out the door. Personal item is a purse, I *think* Allegient is one who charges for extra carry-on, but double check their website to make sure. One good thing is the airport is just minutes from where you will be staying probably.

I am glad to know it is a small airport. My sister lives in Largo and will be picking us up. The purse I use now is a Vera Bradley backpack style. I don't carry much in there, just my wallet, some mints/gum, cell phone and personal items. Here are the dimensions of the bag:
Bag Depth: 11" by 12" by 2.75" 31.5" shoulder strap
Bag Length: 11" by 12" by 2.75" 31.5" shoulder strap Strap Drop: 9.5" Color:
Shoulder straps are removable.
Size: 11" by 12" by 2.75" 31.5" shoulder strap Bag Height: 11" by 12" by 2.75" 31.5" shoulder strap
I think it will fit within the requirements for free carry on bag, 15x7x16. If I am wrong, someone please let me know. I am a nervous Nelly right now and not sure if I trust my math.

It sounds like you're taking a small regional plane. They are very picky about carryons as the storage compartments are much smaller than jets than fly longer distances. Unless your carryon bag is exceedingly small, you should expect to check it - usually you can gate check it so keep it with you until boarding You then usually pick it up at the gate, but sometimes it goes to baggage claim. I haven't flown that particular airline. Your purse will count as your personal item and you can take a kindle with you.
Have fun!
ETA you were posting dimensions at the same time. If it's 11x12x3 it's fine.

Even if a purse is counted as 1 item, I always put it in my carry on bag, and it's fine.

Personal item is a purse, I *think* Allegient is one who charges for extra carry-on, but double check their website to make sure. One good thing is the airport is just minutes from where you will be staying probably. I have no idea what a gangway is but St. Pete has one jetbridge. Most planes depart from roll away stairs or sometimes the actual airplane stairs. I fly Allegiant a lot and hate them. The zone on your boarding pass will indicate how you board but also if you're allowed to use the overhead bin. Flying into St Pete may not be an issue but they are super anal about it flying out of St. Pete. Allegiant is one that you have to pay to use the overhead, and I'm actually glad they're anal about it at PIE. Another thing--they've been having major issues lately because the pilots wanted to strike but were blocked from doing so. So now the pilots appear to be flying "by the book"--that is, even the smallest thing they find wrong, they're turning planes around and canceling flights. It's been a huge news story this month, and my last flight was delayed four hours. Expect and plan for delays! They have no onboard entertainment so bring your own. They also require all electronics to be completely off during takeoff and landing (few airlines require this now). Good and drink cost money so pack snacks from home and buy beverages when you get through security. I would give yourself tons of time on your return trip. Yes, PIE is super small but it is also super disorganized. The lines can be excruciatingly long at times with them having to resort to calling out people going to certain places to go to the head of the line in order to get them through security so they won't miss their flying. Bottom line--I've never felt unsafe on allegiant but you definitely get what you pay for! Have fun!

I always wear shoes that slip on and I wear some sort of socks in case I have to take off my shoes going through security (required if you are not TSA pre-approved). Keep your photo ID handy so you can pull it out easily when checking in and when going through security. All liquid is 3 oz. or less and must be in a quart sized baggie. Each carry-on can have one. I would keep your Rx in a baggie with gel-pack in your purse. DH has never need his prescription for his insulin but carries it just in case. Take extra meds in case you are delayed. We never take our pill bottles, but use the little daily pill containers with a couple extra days worth. Plus, dollar tree has little ziplock pill bags. We always carry the pm med for that day in our purse/pocket. I always carry a small pack of wet-wipes in my purse so I don't have to dig for my hand sanitizer in my carry on. Wipe down that tray table and, I even wipe off the seat belt buckles. Kindle is fine, just slip it in your purse, which is a personal item. Leave as much extra stuff that normally keep in your purse at home. I don't take my big wallet, I use a little compact one for trips. I also don't take my check book with me. Can't carry in bottled water/drink. Be sure to get one after you go through security. Be sure to drink to stay hydrated when you fly. I agree, use restroom right before boarding plane, though you should have a fairly short flight. I do not like getting up once the plane takes off. Enjoy your trip.

In Canada if you are on a really small plane or small airport and if they need some bags to be checked you can give and get your bag from a cart right out on the tarmac. You may be asked to turn your Kindle off during take off and landing, even if it doesn't send/receive any signals. Liquids is 3-1-1 three ounces of liquid in one quart sized bag per person. If you are taking makeup things like eyeshadow don't go in a liquid bag. Don't bring pointed metal nail files or scissors, lighters. Seems obvious but it's not to everyone. You can't take a drink through security but can buy one once you're through. Relax and have fun!!!! If I lived in the USA and could get flights for $100ish bucks to places I'd be gone every weekend.

I don't have experience with this since I just bring a bottle of Motrin in my carryon.

I wasn't going to go into all the Allegiant issues, figure she was freaked out enough.

I'm diabetic and carry multiple forms of insulin, supplies and pills. I've never shown a prescription for any of it, not even on international flights. Twenty years ago, I did carry things in the original bottles, but since I've never been asked, I don't anymore. I do have a label from the insulin box that I cut down to just the label size, but I'm sure it's expired. But it has my doctor info and pharmacy info on it. I carry my pills in a pill organizer. Make sure you have all valuables and medications in your carry on. If you are asked to check your carry on, then you have it with you. I carry all of my meds and supplies in a separate cosmetic bag. (if there isn't room for it all in the overhead bins, you may be forced to check it.
Medications aren't part of the 3 oz rule. You can keep them separate from shampoo, toothpaste, etc. and they don't need to be in a quart ziplock bag. I have a Kate Spade Cosmetic bag that opens flat and has clear pockets. I put all of my insulin pens, needles, alcohol pads, needle clip, glucometer, etc and pills in that bag. Target has similar bags by the makeup and they work well for travel. I've had it looked at by security, but never more than a cursory look. Insulin pens (or bottles) are well labeled, so I don't worry about it. It's considered necessary and they won't separate you from it by putting it in cargo. They may ask to have you put it in an overhead bin, however. Be sure to take at least a day or two extra meds in case you get stuck and can't get home. Insulin doesn't need to be kept cold if it will be used within 30 days, so I don't travel with cold packs. If you choose to do so, make sure the insulin isn't right up next to the cold pack or it will freeze. The cold pack is classified as a liquid, but is allowed for medical use.
When you are traveling, be sure to check your blood glucose regularly. The changes in diet, meal times, activity level, stress, and being out of your regiment can change your BG numbers. I'll forget to take my meds or forget if I took them because I have a set routine at home and can't always follow it when traveling. If you have lows, I highly recommend that you have some form of quick sugar on your body. Raisins work for me. In an emergency, you can ask the flight attendant for juice (which is what I would normally use), but it may not be the quickest option and then you have too many people watching you as you get the shakes and sweat for 20 minutes! Be sure to drink. High BG from being off your routine and eating other's food, warm temps, and flying will dehydrate you. And then you have a UTI. I carry an empty water bottle and then fill it at a drinking fountain or restaurant after I'm through security. That way I'm not buying a $3 bottle of water that I don't want to drink because it was $3.
Try not to stress out too much. Flying generally goes well for most people. There's always a glitch, but it's usually not huge once you actually think about it. Enjoy the time with your sister!

Size: 11" by 12" by 2.75" 31.5" shoulder strap Bag Height: 11" by 12" by 2.75" 31.5" shoulder strap I think it will fit within the requirements for free carry on bag, 15x7x16. If I am wrong, someone please let me know. I am a nervous Nelly right now and not sure if I trust my math. You can take your backpack purse, and also a carry on bag within the dimensions you stated. Your insulin and any other medications you take daily need to go with you, in the original container with the prescription label. Also, you can take a quart size zip lock baggie with cosmetics/liquids in 3 oz. or less containers. Slip on shoes (wear socks unless you don't mind stepping on the gross airport floor), and a pashmina are great ideas. Your Kindle or a magazine to read will also be helpful. As already stated, buy a water bottle after you have passed through security. Have fun!
