We have had Osa in our home for a little over a month now.
Cash has slowly learned not to bark, snarl, growl or be aggressive. He has finally gotten the idea that she is here to stay, and he tolerates her pretty well.
She is, in many ways, an absolute joy. She is a fun loving, lively, sweet dog. She is 40 pounds and thinks she is a lap dog.She gives kisses all the time and will follow me around anywhere in the house. She LOVES to be held, petted, cuddled and otherwise touched; which is a HUGE difference from our older dog, Cash who is a little more reserved and stand offish.
She is super energetic. She LOVES to play. She thinks sticks are the best thing ever invented and she loses her ever loving mind for a tennis ball (which is destroyed in less than a minute).
She has NO boundaries. NONE. She wants to play ALL.THE.TIME. If she wants to play, she barrels at Cash and pushes, and pushes, and pushes. She does come at Cash in fairly "normal" play invitations, but he tells her to back off. He turns his side to her, backs off, leaves the room and only if she gets the "zoomies" or comes at him with "rude" behavior will he snarl or bare teeth or snap. The kinds of behaviors he is showing when she comes at him too "hot" seem fear aggressive to me.
While things in the HOUSE are settling down, outside is a different story. Osa loves to play outside- she rolls in the grass, chases bugs, chews on sticks, and generally acts like a goof. Cash used to love the backyard- he would spend HOURS outside, sitting in the shade and watching birds or squirrels. He was just the KING of the yard and had a wonderful time hanging out as the big cheese.
Since we did a LOT of training outside, and gave Osa more room to be "wild" outside, Cash has really become afraid of the yard. He absolutely will not go onto the grass if Osa is outside unless someone is out there to "block" her into her "side" of the yard. If she is loose in the house, but not near the door, he WILL go in the yard, but not very far, and only to pee/poo. For him to go out and relax at all, she has to have been in her crate or "jail" (time out, effectively- she gets wild and we put her in a calming area) for 20 minutes or so.
I would really love to say it's perfect, but it isn't. We have work to do, but we are making progress. I would love any hints on helping Cash get back to loving the yard.
thanks so much!
