I'm just starting to get my ducks in a row to apply for teaching positions after being out of the field (and completely out of the workforce) for over ten years.
My resume is ready to go, but the district I am applying to has a spot for uploading a letter of introduction. Sample letters online show a format where the applicant refers to work history, but obviously in my case there is a gap. I'm looking for a way to address this, but short and sweet. Suggestions?

What did you do? Raise a family and do volunteer work? Such gaps are common with female teachers. Say that.

I would address it by demonstrating what you have done during those 10 years that would make you a good teacher.
Any classes you have taken, new skills learned?
If you have something to demonstrate you have kept up with the profession... all the better.

Yes, and if you have prior teaching experience, even if it is old, reference that in the letter.

We just interviewed a teacher who had a 12 year gap. Her prior experience was before having her own children. In her letter she referenced how becoming a mother has changed her perspective on teaching and the students that will be in her care. She also addressed her volunteer work and what she did to stay current.

Thanks, I was thinking along those lines. My previous position was an offshoot of what I did before we started our family so I haven't technically applied for a job in 20 years--major learning curve!

I have no advice other than what has been previously mentioned but wanted to say good luck! I hope the perfect job is right around the corner.

I've been a SAHM for 13 years and just got my first teaching job. I did student teach in the fall so I talked about my experiences with that. However, I also talked about how my life experience would benefit me in the position. I also read the job requirements and tailored my cover letter to what each district was looking for. Good luck!
