My dog owns the yard. He doesn't chase people off it like the girl in my avatar did (she was wild), but he owns the yard. He is always outside prancing around looking pretty. A minute ago (or less) he went outside to pee and there was a doe in the front. She chased him to the other side of the lawn. Then another one came out from behind the house and she chased him onto the cement walkway to the front door. He is scared of deer. (They didn't have babies or anything so there was no one to guard. They just came by for dinner and we have nothing except a laurel hedge that they never ate for 30 years. They like it now, apparently). Poor old man. I think he is scared. and because I love him!

My lab/boxer mix is such a sweetheart, seriously, she is the most friendly and cheerful dog I've ever seen. Other dogs, people, the neighbor's chickens and guinea fowl, deer, rabbits, toads, turtles, grasshoppers, crickets, etc. Every person, every animal, every bug is a friend.
Except for...praying mantis.
I always have a lot of praying mantis' in my yard and garden. My lab/boxer mix always goes "nose to nose" with the praying mantis. She growls, the fur at the scruff of her neck and along her back is raised, her eyes get very mean looking and serious. She gives the praying mantis the "stink eye" and she goes into a full blown intimidation stance. The praying mantis, of course, kind of rears back and gets their front legs (are they called legs?) up in that boxing stance.
It is the funniest darn thing I have ever seen.
I need to record it the next time it happens.

Our labs just swat at bugs. The black one doesn't like birds. She'll chase them off the yard and bark at them. She also loves to chase rabbits. She hasn't caught one yet, but she will. She caught a mouse once and chomped on it, so I don't think she's a wimp.

When Gracie was alive she'd chase after anything in her yard. She did regular patrols of the perimeter when out going potty. Once she started after a cat in the yard (she didn't hurt them, but did send them packing) and then realized it was our own cat and I've never seen her put on the brakes so fast, lol! Our cats absolutely ruled the roost, to her.

I used to have a pair of paper mache Christmas reindeer that were about the same height as my sheltie. I only put them out at Christmas... she would spend a day walking past the room they were in and growl at them. Slowly she would get braver and race past them growling.
Then she would bark at them before running past them. It was a hoot. If anyone moved a deer for any reason it would start all over.

It's funny you ask because I was just telling my husband about my poor pup...she was outside and I was trying to leave her out for a bit so she would go poop. I looked outside and she was cowering by the door and shaking like a little leaf. There was a lawn mower at our neighbor's house and I guess she was scared of it. Poor baby...she can definitely be a spook about things. She also gets scared when we are in the car and go on a bridge.

Two nights ago, I googled, "Dog afraid of kittens." Gingersnap has been getting clearly agitated when the kittens want to play with him. He gets up and moves when they approach him; he just looks so pitiful.
He has also recently developed a fear of thunder. DD says she screamed in his ear after a particularly loud bit of thunder, and that is the cause of his issues.

I'm not sure what happened to our dog before we got her, we got her from a rescue at 4 months old, but is scared of too many things to list.
Just a few: Water (she's a lab) Pile of branches Briefcases Broom (and vacuum, but that is pretty common) Bathroom - after 3 years she will now kind of slink in with coaxing, soft words, and petting but is ready to run at any moment
It took me months to get her to roll over to pet her belly (and clip her nails, which I've given up on and have it done by a groomer now)
She is soooo sweet though.

Yes, Turriff is a great big wuss. He runs away from scissors, tick drops, the shower, and nail clippers. He tries to hide on top of my bed, because that's where he feels safest. Yesterday I bought him a flea/tick collar because he is so scared of the ointment. We then tried to cut off the excess length, but he wouldn't let us near him with the scissors. It drives me crazy; he even needs diazepam before he goes to the vet - for a booster. He's absolutely fine with people, not scared of them at all, and he even punched a policeman when he was a pup!

Our Opie isn't afraid of much at all. He is a 50 pound Bull Terrier/Shar-Pei mix, built like a tank. The only thing that I have found that he is scared of is the vacuum cleaner. He takes off the second I pull it out. A while ago I finished vacuuming and couldn't find Opie. I looked all over that house.
Finally, I checked our 2nd floor guest bathroom again. Pulled back the shower curtain and there he was, curled into a little ball...

I WISH my dogs would learn to be afraid of skunks!

My corgi used to have short man's syndrome. He was a tough guy. He got chased by a coyote and now is much more cautious of legs that are taller than his. This is good because we have bear, mountain lion, lynx, coyote, fox and the ever frightening deer in our yard.
I can't remember ever having a skunk in the yard or meeting one anywhere but the babies in my neighbor's garage.

I'd be afraid of a deer coming at me too. My dog is afraid of one of the cats. The girl cat chases him and bites him. The little dog is fine with the guy cat, they just sniff noses and go about their business.

We call our Sophie "The Warning Dog" because she barks so loudly at anything out of place (including leaves blowing.) Notice we don't call her "The Protector" because once she warns us, she hides behind us. Peeking out and expecting us to protect her. Every dog needs a position in the pack

She'll chase a Great Dane if we let her but bring out an Nutella and she's hiding!

Mine are not afraid of deer as long as they were on the other side of the fence. Pearl is afraid of any thing touching her like remote controls, pencils, pens, any object that could be held in a hand. no she nobody has hit her with anything like that. We thing that a remote that was on a blanket int he middle of the night might have rolled on her while she was sleeping and hit her. She sleeps right next to my butt between husband and I and we have both fallen asleep with remotes in our hands. now we don't hold them we lay them beside our pillows. i think Gadget is afraid of the dark. He doesn't like going outside at night by himself and he doesn't like being out there longer then it takes him to pee. If we are outside at night and he is out there he will stand by the door and bark until we let him in. No matter what we are doing.
Skip is afraid of thunder, fireworks, and smoke alarms. and his people leaving him. Well all three of them are afraid of the smoke alarm.

My 139 lb black lab has always been a scaredy-cat. He came to us as a pup so I can attest to the fact that he's lead a very cushy life. He was submissive to the 3 lb toy poodle in my avatar. He is very entertaining; he is afraid of the vacuum cleaner, he doesn't like it if things are not where they belong. Heaven forbid you rearrange the furniture, he moves in a wide arc around anything not in it's place and gives it the old stink eye. He is afraid of trick-or-treaters, fire works, repair men, the vet, strangers, other non-dogs. When we went to Disneyland last Christmas he stayed in the same very nice kennel for 5 days that he's stayed in numerous times before and was so depressed that someone sat with him the whole time. He's 9 now and not growing a new personality, but is the sweetest old guy I know. I just wish he had a smidge more confidence! He's like Scooby in Scooby Doo, if he could just jump up in my arms when he's afraid, he'd be there 24/7. Here he is with his scaredy-cat face on: Attachments:

I take her for a walk by a thicket of trees, and sometimes she will stop, growl at them, then get behind me. That actually freaks me out and makes me walk really fast past them.

Our golden retriever is a big coward. He even gets behind me to protect him at times. He's not a big barker but when he does we check it out. We had another golden who was petite in size but he had short man syndrome and would go after any and everything. Two difference personalities entirely.

The pool. Our dog is terrified of our swimming pool. This is the same dog that will run full tilt into any pond or straight into the spray nozzle of a hose but barks madly at us if we are in the pool because she is so concerned for our safety and tries to blocks my youngest from getting in, and the few times we've gotten her in it she shakes with fear until she is out. I know she can swim. I've seen her do it dozens of times.
She's part lab. She's a water dog.
I had such high hopes of having a swimming dog. I guess only if the bottom is dirt.

Our Macy is a border collie/sheltie mix and the biggest wimp around. That's why we love her though. She hardly has an aggressive bone in her body and it's what made her so wonderful with our kids over the years. She's afraid of other dogs, water, the dark, and mostly our cat. She would never try to run off someone/something in her yard. She'd run straight for the back door to come in.
